Ska is not a form of punk. Ska came into existance in the 1950s in Jamaica, 20 years before punk was ever realized. During the second popular wave of ska music in the 1970s (called Two-Tone, linked to the type of music played and the style incorporated with the music, black and white for racial equality), punk bands from the UK took on ska type upstrokes on the downbeat of their music. This can be seen with Madness, The Beat, The Specials and so forth.

Ska is amazing, and it gave birth to so much.

What are you talking about. Third wave ska is more punkish, but there's still a lot of artists that sound more traditional. Two tone ska sounds even less like punk most of the time and first wave was around before punk existed.

the only ska i like is 1st and part of the 2nd generation. mostly dance hall and 2 tone for me but i gotta be in a mood for that shit.

like the skatalites, toots and the maytals, selector, hot knives, the specials, the riffs, johnny cliff, the coventry automatics and such.

and slaze if you new anything about music you'd know that 3rd generation ska is just really weak pop punk. its like a 3rd cousin, your not really related and you pretty much have nothing to do with them.

Ugh, this thread is an abomination! Most of the bands mentioned are only influenced by ska, and some don't go any further than upstrokes and some brass. Most bands from the 3rd wave aren't really ska, unless of course they play first wave or 2 tone styles, ie. The Toasters, Hepcat, The Slackers. Not trashing any of the 3rd wave 'ska' bands, but they are so far removed from original ska that they cannot be appropriately claimed as such. 3rd wave is so easy to get sick of, especially the bubblegum shit.
