View Full Version : Where Do You Practice?

plywood is good, but it can be expensive if you dont have any around or old canvas sheets are great, but be careful not to overdo it
But sometimes its better to not do it at your house.
If you leave shit lying around then neighbors, parents, whoever might see it and call the cops.
And yeah, its good to not fill the streets with shit but, sometimes you come up with the best tags/throws on the spot.

i practice at a small electricity house or something (don't know if you have it in america)
i practice at these really chill random walls in the woods behind this school. i went during the day yesterday but my stuff came out fucked up because it was so cold, and the walls had some ice on them causing the paint to run. but im definatley going back when it gets warmer.

i practce under bridges and shit with cans tht hae barley anything left so its easier tht way when i do it on an important wall
acidconceptone
02-26-2007, 10:20 PM
no practice with shit full cans. the lower pressure in the barely anything left cans is going to cause the paint to come out slower, thus making it easier to paint, less drips, etc... you arent doing yourself a favour by using empty cans. but thats just my $0.02

juss go out and get some krylon/rustoleum, and go behind a building, or in an alley not facing the street.
let's face it, the first couple times you paint, its going to loook like shit, and no one wants to see shit on a wall.

we used to practice at this huge abandoned "silk mill" back in my day the thing was huge like 6 floors and all the walls where white so my entire local scene started there. That was over 8 years ago so now i guess nobody gets up their its sort of not worth the trouble as the owners have tried to pursue security for the property.
I have a highway bridge in the neighboorhood where you can get under, it's chill there, you can take your time cause nobody comes there, 2 days ago i spended like 8 hours practicing there with a g/f, and didn't saw nobody B)

I live and paint (non-graffiti) in a hundred year old mortuary near downtown LA. Over the last year I have become fascinated by graffiti and graffiti tools. The people on this board have been a huge inspiration and source of information, so thank you.
This is the only non-brick wall in my joint, and it gets destroyed nightly with paint, mop tags, streaks, and Garvey. So much fun.
Enjoy.

oh man im still on the lookout for a blank wall nobody passes by, like under a bridge but just recently my friend bought a big peice of sheetmetal, i think like 4 or 5 by 8 ft and hes all over that...he jus screwed it to a tree and got painting...i dont like plywood so much cuz the tougher the surface to paint on(like easy drip stuff) the more you will get out of it(and wood soaks paint, therefore fewer drips, learn less, at least based on my knowledge), and its all about the practice so just a heads on that, he got it for like 15 dolla so not to bad

EDIT: saw a fence today that had throwies all over it... didn't think much of it until about 5 minutes later when i realized they were all pretty similar... went back to it and looked, and it was the same throw (for the most part) over and over again... each one was dated, and they were in chronological order from left to right... they were over a span of 6 months, and a new one was painted about every week and a half... each one was slightly better than the first, but you could tell when the guy switched paint... at about 1/2 way through, the paint went from thin and kinda splotchy with a very dull color to thick and bright colors with a good coverage, but the fill and outlines were still basically the same in terms of the way he painted.
i thought it was fucking stupid, but did show progression over time.

I practice in this sewer tunnel thing. I don't know, it's not really a sewer, cause there is only 2 1/2 feet wide of water running through it, and about 3-4 feet of dry concrete on each side of the water. And you don't have to duck to go in it, but I do anyway cause every inch of the ceiling is covered in spider webs. The only other shit painted in there is stuff like "_____ was here" and "SMOKE WEED", and a few tags from actual writers. And it goes on for a loooong ass time, with mainly blank walls in the deeper darker part. Last place i'll ever get busted too, so you can even load up a bong in there then paint for a long time.

I practice on a wall in my yard. I grab some paint, do a piece, then go over it. Better than under a bridge because even though the surface isn't as nice, the lighting is alot better and no chance of getting caught.

I have been keeping my eye out for abandoned buildings around where I live. Well I found this one that had just gone to hell, with shit everywhere, it was a wreck. There was already some toy (more toy than me) that went through with a bunch of just lame tags and almost gang graffiti lookin type shit. I decided I didnt really want to paint there cuz it was just so dumpy. Then I found a house closer to mine that was abandoned that doesn't ahve shit everyone. there is like broken glass and shit on the ground but its like a big house. In its prime it was probly worth like 2 million. So I just go in there and none of the walls have been touched with a can and they are like off white colored and its just bliss. I love it.

i climb onto the roof of my old elementary school to practice painting. i actually refer to it as my 'practice wall' when talking about it with my buddy that writes.
it's a pretty big wall to cover considering i don't do ENORMOUS bombs yet, still developing a style. and since it's elementary school, most of this shit there (if any at all) is shit like "i love karly" or "karly is so hot" or pictures of karly's hot body drawn by 10 year olds. so i feel prideful when i go over them ;) .

I found about 15 pieces of that foil faced insulation board on big garbage day. I screwed few to the wall of my garage's attic and put some salvaged fans in the windows for airflow. The insulation board is good if you roll it out with some cheap flat white so it doesn't sponge up your aerosol. I think its like $7 a board at home depot. The cool thing is I can listen to music and have my sketches to look at while I practice. Hope it helps.
