I should spend a rainy day skimming this thread looking for the one guy who said "I played Mark Ecko's Getting Up, and it inspired me to write."
that would be sweet.
edit: whoops, found it.
Hah I didn't really care about graffiti or even really notice it much around town until I got Getting Up for ps2... I realized how interesting the graff life is.. so I started looking up things on the internet and then I got deep into it... yea :D
It was the kids first and last post. Poor kid. They probably lynched him.

i grew up in with GTB crew, TMF, TDK, RK, and even painted with TMS crew from germany. i only lived 20 some miles from frisco, and we were all a bunch of punk ass stoners who listed to scum fuck rock and roll and underground hip-hop. we hated the system, so we resisted the only way we could think of..... by bombing the shit out of anything and everything we could get our hands on. Do i regret it? FUCK NO. Painting has kept me sober from drugs (save mary jane) and i've met many many cool writers and hip hop artists in the process, not to mention all the games of cat and mouse we played with the cops, and all the experiences we talk about now. I really cant imagine where i would be if it wasn't for graf.... everyone should paint at least once in their life to see the rush we get from it, and not just hate because it's "vandalism". 20 bucks worth of paint, removed with 5 bucks worth of brake cleaner.... it actually seems less cost effective to buff..... but whatever.
stay up, keep writing, long live the SF Bay Area!

I always loved the art form.. as a kid I would love watching the graff scene even though I never knew anything about it.. I knew one day I was going to be one of the 'Mysterious graffiti people'
soo then I started copping immortal techinque on his bio it said he used to be down with graff when he was younger.. then I picked up a magazine at my camp.. I found it around somewhere.. like ona a picnic bench, so I just checked out the pieces started doing my own pieces.. but I've always loved vandalising shit I remember when I was like 12 I would write 'CZUP' on the busses and shit and then getting chased for it and hopping out the fire emergency exit.. it's just something I've always loved and I decided to pursue it..

Once i moved into the mile high city, my brother met a new friend a school and invited him to come over. He would draw burners and throw-ups on this binder we didn't use. Once i saw what he drew, graffiti had me by the balls..

I got into graff, because I lived in redneck city, OH. It was just an expression of self to say "I'm not you". It was also a mixture of that good ole teenage rebellion, friends who felt the same as me, and most importantly... ART.

Actually, I invented graffiti.....
One day, while I was finding a cure for the bubonic plague while simultaneously slicing a piece of bread for the first time in recorded history, jesus came to me in a vision (i.e. - showed me his image in the macaroni of my kids cuisine). The image began to speak, it said that I must stop being so hot and sexy all of the time and start doing graff, that crazy bastard! The image then proceeded to fade away and I consumed the anointed pasta. I felt a jolt of holy energy run through my spine and quickly took to the streets and began to paint. I started out painting daffodils with ak47's, but I figured that might be too offensive in light of recent flower-based tragedies involving weaponry across America, so I thought that letters would be more appropriate. Anyone else who does graffiti is copying me.

few years back, on a trip to montreal, all i could see was SAKE SAKE SAKE SAKE SAKE like a fucking rally down a block. it amazed me, and i think it was the first time i ever took graffiti seriously. that and the intro to fresh prince of course. and then like 2 years ago, at still a young age, i started drawing my own little letters, and i never tied it to graffiti at all. then one day, all this media coverage started going around my city about the huge graffiti "crisis", and it hit me that i really wanted to do it. so...2 years later, im a developing toy. ahahha, like everybody who starts i guess.

this could be a risky post, considering it's pretty specific... ahhh fuck it..
me and my friend got stopped by police one night... and it was a dickhead ass bitch cop who was eggin' us on to talk shit, by saying "why you driving like such a dickhead?" and my friend says "fuck you guy".. lights go off, it was a DT who had a rather large ego... he had claimed my friend was going to jail for a couple years because of some shake that was nonexistent on the floor in his car... and he said "you can redeem yourself ya know... i see you have a king size sharpie... you taggin?" my friend says "i have before, but i've tagged stupid shit like "**** loves ******" and the cop says "we have pics of that, come into the station to make a statement and you'll be free to go" and so he gets to the station to say "well sir, you're under arrest". me and my boy didn't even tag back then, i swear to fucking god. then i thought "holy shit, i wanna kill people. but it's pretty easy to get caught killing people, so i might as well do graffiti as much as humanly possible".

well 2 of my friends did graff but they mainly tagged, one was great at pretty much all areas of art and the other sucked, and they came to school with all kinds of markers that they racked all the time, and i thought they were just fags thinking they were badass,
our town is small and has like 3 artists, who usually tag alleys, but one day some "gang" of loser kids climbed up a wall in our school in a dark lobby that no one goes in much and made a huge throwup in pencil between classes..
so my 2 buddies wanted to go over it, so they told me to come up with a name, i cant even remember what it was but the next day with some woodcraft markers and mops with shitty ink we completely filled the whole room (it was dark and people dont go there in the morning) with tags, the lineoleum floors, the walls, the ceiling tiles, a window etc.. then they got called down to the office, and for some reason they defended my ass and wouldnt say who I was, they got kicked out for 5 days, community service, restitution w/e, not much trouble in town since they werent up much.
i wanted to be better than them, instead of just tags i wanted to go bigger. i knew id be more careful than them i mean they brought paint to school, tagged theyre clothes, shoes backpacks, notebooks,
so i changed my name to cheapshot, sounds cool and as graffiti artists we constantly "cheapshot" people so it fits. and i learned more about graff online, etc, and i wanted to be better than the guys here, and the fact that its a small town means more fame, but its winter now so im stocking up, sketching, reading up on techniques and w/e, but id like to see some more talent in this town, inspire some new artists, its my goal to be responsible for starting graff in this town,
so basically im tired of looking at the same shades of gray, i wish there was color around every corner like the cities

I hated all the tagers at my school. Cause they were fags and all sucked. So I went out and put line through all of their stuff and got up way more than they did (Too bad I sucked at the time). Then eventually me and my mate made a crew to battle those cunts from my school. Then yeh. I just didn't stop and made a new crew and got more "Professional" in a way.

well actually the police got me into graff for arresting me for graffiti i didn't do, and i had to go to court and spend money for this shit. but what really blew it up for me is when my newfound friends were painting trains listening to dubstep on the way there. i thought they went hand in hand.

I was mad young like 10 or 11 and saw this mtv show downtown that had these writers in it, and about the same time there was this guy "mook" writing in pittsburgh doing some crazy spots. Like dude would climb the top of bridges and shit, but it peaked my interest quite a bit.
So I started gettin paint anyway I could and just hitting stuff in my area, got caught with a couple buddies. We quit for a couple years, I got back into it oin and off for a while, then a year or so ago I just got back into it again.

I had just moved into LA from florida. Didnt even know what the hell tagging was. Untill one day I was with 2 of my friends whom I had just met about a month ago, walking back to one of thier houses in an alley way. They were talking about this mop marker they had bought off of bombingscience.com (XD) but i didnt really pay attention and then one of my freinds pulled out a marker and did a tag on a dumpster and they were al paranoid about people seeing them and I was all confused like "WTF who gives a shit if someone see you writing on a dumpster its not like its illegal or anything"
Then they told me about how things were in cali and I was like fuck this and the next day I took one of those crayola washable marker and tagged on a sign (TOY AS HELL) infront of all these cars at a stop light (Because I didnt think tagging was really bad and that people called the cops on you for it) and my 2 friends are like "WTF your crazy"
None of it really appealed to me until they told me about the half of a mile long piece that MTA did in LA. Now that shit amazed me and got me into it for real. Then all of a sudden I found out a bunch of my other friends tagged too and i was like "WTF again never relized this was such a huge thing"
1 Friend- Was actually really good but got busted for tagging up school so doesnt write anymore
2 Friend- still writes and i thought he was actually really good when i was first starting but NOW i relize that he is toy as hell
Me- I end up getting more into this then they do

Since I was little I loved to watch the trains. I used to go to work with my dad at 5 am everyday when I was young. On lunch we would walk the tracks. Some kid painted a huge sunset on the wall behind his wrk, and his superior called and told him it had to go because everything needed to look clean. I helped him roll over this wall and I was so sad..I just looked at this art in amazement before we covered the whole thing. So had a BOMB ass Lionell train set and once I got homeI drew all over the carts cause I thought it was sick. Since then I loved it.

Well i lived in LA for like 8 years now, i been into art and shit since i dont know when, when ever my mom or my dad drove on the freeway i would see bombs and pieces covering the walls and i was like amazed that they could make art outta fucking letters, then when i was in 8th grade i sat next to this writer that was in a well recognize crew around where i lived so i would see him doing sketches all day long in class, so one day was bored as fuck so i decided to try making a sketch, it came out all crappy and i guess the guy saw it and was like, you write too? and i said naw im just bored,
and then we started talking and he told me about these crews and stories and shit and i was like damn this graff shit sounds dope, so one day i found one of those white out pens and i went into a bath room and did a shitty ass tag on the wall and i got this rush or feeling of achievement and ive been tryna go hard ever since then

See I've allways been an artist, ever sence I can remember art was like portal to another time relm where I could just drift away and be me, growing up in Ri and still growing theirs allot of talent around these streets, I think it was when I saw my first sloe wildstyle that I was amaizing at what could be done with a can./ it was a personal art form graffiti, but more than that a way of life see after I cought the eye for photography that took me deeper into graffiti, evertime I would drive threw providence my eyes would be candy'd in to all the style and the flares of these people who had left their marks on this city, the 1st time I had sprayed a can in an abanded building was the day graffiti captured my soul, peicers from Die Seaz Lead Gyer and all these guys still today I look up to and respect..I am not graffiti/Graffiti is me_>and I won't stop getting better_>and I won't stop period ...everywhere I go I can be found with a deco laceing my name..once I get outta school think I'm gunna go hit some throws and work on getting my lines as crisp as possible,,to all my reall artists out their keep doing watchu do and never turn down a helping hand, Trustyou

I started getting into it threw the internet but didnt do much other than little sketches on scrap paper. Then I had an art class with this kid who at the time was TEKO and he showed me his black book and so I got more into it. I started showing him my sketches and he helped me in my weak areas and then he got busted and so he helped me and then I gave him a new name and we started a cru together. So I guess I got started by internet and a friend.

There was a lunar eclipse and i transformed into a spray enamel breathing beast.
Actually I was a bboy for about 4 years when i was a kid, and of course with the culture I learned the elements and I was always a good artist and i loved wrecking shit...so i did what came natural.....

I blame my creator for not having the balls to go out earlier.... I also blame his parents for raising him in the middle of nowhere

When i was a little younger, about 11/12, i would walk long distances almost every day. I'd just choose a direction and go. I'd do this for hours. One day, i was walking and saw these two guys doing a piece in this alley. when i turned the corner, they were already in starting position.
I say" Chill, guys i'm not the police."
The taller one chuckles a little and goes back to work. Then the shorter one says "What are you doing around here at this time of night, little dude?"
"Walking. I do it all the time."
He goes back to his piece and says "you don't write, do you?" I figured he meant graffiti, so i said no.
The taller one says "You should. Since you're always walking and all. Then people would know where you've been."
I thought about it... i've always liked graffiti, and had been making little tags ever since i could remember. Plus i'd just met these two great artists. I said yeah, i'll think about it.
They're like cool and continue.
A few minutes later, they finish. The tall one wrote "sensi" and the shorter one wrote "Gone"." I was amazed at their skill.
sensi says "You can talk to me whenever you want tips and shit. I'll help you out." Gane says "same here"
I thanked both of them and they went on their way.
That finally inspired me to do graffiti.

From the book Graffiti Underworld: Villains, Vandals, and Visionaries
Cornbread: "I got into graffiti when I was incarcerated at a Juvenile detention facility. I insisted that the head cook Mr. Swanson put cornbread on the kitchen menu. They served us white bread everyday"
http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h448/graffitiunderworld/Newspaper-post.jpg
Hael TKO: "There were a lot of gang blocks on the walls of the East LA neighborhood I grew up in. That influenced me. That was the first graffiti I ever saw. It wasn't until high school that I noticed the different styles of writing. Hazard, State St., 18th St. The drifters, those were the gangs that were around at that time when I was growing up."

Ghouls: "I was real young when I started writing on things. At first I did “civilian“ graffiti. I wrote band names or girls names with crayons or markers, whatever I could get my hands on. In junior high I was into skateboarding and punk rock and generally running a muck. Tagging seemed a natural expression of those interests. I was in high school when I saw the book Spraycan Art, and started seeking out graffiti in my home town. I started spray painting in 1992."

My cousin was bored one day so he used the 'Graffiti Creator' online. He told me about over email or the phone or something. I messed around on it for a while, then joined the forum. After that, it was on! ;)

I've always been interested in graffiti since I can remember. I remember driving down the highway in PHX AZ, my head would be swiveling look at all the art. Too bad a lot of it is clean now, car rides are a lot more boring when I go back to AZ.

i saw a music video that had graffiti in it. it was just a couple throws that are only seen for a few seconds, but they just looked so damn cool. i went and got a black and red sharpie, and wrote 'one blood' with drips while taking a shit in bubble letters.
lmfao thats gotta be the most boring post in this thread haha
