no it is not being straight edge...straight edge was born from hardcore punk and many hardcore band are straight edge but you do not have to be straight edge to be hardcore

dajam410
11-06-2006, 11:39 AM
Hardcore is a fucking genre of music, which has developed into a stereotypical lifestyle. I'm not ragging on anyone, i'm really into the hardcore scene myself. Clothing is clothing, even if you do look like a gay hair dresser, judging how "hardcore" someone is just by how they look makes you no better than they are. Everyone has their own tastes.

my reasoning behind dogging on kids who look like hairdressers as you've so perfectly described it(not sarcasm, thats actually a pretty accurate description of them) is because the shit they listen to simply isnt hardcore no matter how much they wish it was. and they way they look certianly draws attention to themselves(even if they intend it to or not) and that attention begs people the question "why do you look like that?" and they usually say something to the effect of "oh, i listen to hardcore" which is not only misrepresentation on their own behalf, but its giving all the kids who listen to real hardcore and are actually a part of their local hardcore scene a bad name. cause as soon as someone hears the word hardcore they immediately think "oh, that herb ass hairdresser looking kid"

I tried to rock tight pants, realised I was a fag so I want back to baggy. I like the felling of skinny dipping in my clothes and not with my package pinned against my leg. Plus all the kids at my school are scene kids so when they see a thug type kid they don't fuck with you.

Straight edge has NOTHING to do with being vegitarian or vegan. NOTHING. All it includes is not doing drugs, drinking, smoking, or casual sex. THATS IT! If you think there is more to it, then you are wrong. Other people add on stuff like being vegitarian or vegan as a personal choice...but that is definatly not a requirement...at all. I don't know how you can say hardcore for life if you dont even know what you are talking about... <_<

hardcore is becoming a fad with some people, particularly younger people who dont really know much about the genre or their local scene.

i dont listen to hardcore myself and im not sayin im hardcore or know a lot about it, i prefer punk and oi but i have noticed its the "new" thing around

at least here anyway,

there is lots of teens wearing studded belts and long blue fringes that have heard about this "new thing" called "hardcore" and they say they listen to hardcore and are hardcore

kinda kids who'll spend 500 dollars on clothes and dye their long hair black and say they're hardcore as they make their way to the AFI or greenday show

you see them all and ask what sorta music they're into and they'll say hardcore, so you ask what bands they listen to and they're like "atreyu, avenged sevenfold..." etc etc, its kinda lame

sorta goes with
"You was a Punk in '77
and you was a Skinhead in '78
You tried Mod but you were too late,
changing changing all the time"

they change their image all the time and consider genres a fashion

boston is obviously awesome for a hardcore kid, yet i use to be into it way more than i am now. now i actually play in a hardcore band, yet i find myself listening to more and more different shit. but it's cool, just im getting sick of the violence in our scene along with the dumb drama

thats so true man...ive been playing in bands for 6 years now. Whenever I am playing metal, i want to listen to hardcore. Whenever I play punk i listen to slow stuff, and whenever I play hardcore I listen to punk rock...its weird. Ive been listening to more slower stuff and melodic stuff lately. Like Say Anything, and Pistolita and stuff like that

E-Terror
11-24-2006, 12:37 AM
i go through phases personally. like ill always listen to a few core(core as in like, central) bands but ill go through different periods of what i listen to on the side. it was grind not too long ago. now its leaning more towards old toughguy shit, where its not quite metal but not exactly hardcore, like old Biohazard

More into stuff like JFA, Governtment Issue, SSD, Negative Approach, No Mercy...stuff like that. 80's hardcore...pretty much anytype. Crossover, edge, youth crew, whatever...I dont listen to much new stuff unless it sounds old. Although I do love new melodic hardcore bands...like modern life is war or stuff like Have Heart. What the fuck am I talking about...I listen to a ton of new stuff. Just not toughguy at all. Ive been up for waaaaaaaay too long...oh man, im tired lakds;flkjads

we should start an e-hardcore band through BS

each respective member will record their part as a track, and someone will lay the tracks togeteher and do all the production work.

^that is NOT punk in the least bit.

they look like some wannabe anarcho gutter punks. (although weed and beer have to be two of my favorite things ever)

u cant like hardcore and then turn around and say fuck punk. thats one of the biggest contradictions that one can make. before hardcore was called "hardcore" there were bands like minor threat, black flag, bad brains, earth crisis, youth of today, gang green, and many more. these bands were classified as "punk" and/or "thrash." the kids who liked these bands considered themselves to be into "punk" music. later as the music progressed and more bands were formed people started calling it "hardcore punk" to distinguish it from bands like sex pistols and ramones. then eventually they just dropped the word "punk" and called it "hardcore."

so yea. hardcore is an offshoot of punk. and thats that.

while its true shit like youth crew definately evolved from punk, alot of hardcore more evolved from metal in my opinion.

PanDEMIC
11-26-2006, 07:47 PM
ok yea. earth crisis probably didnt belong in that list. they are, in a sense, the product of metal ethics being integrated into punk/hardcore music. especially nowadays. but they are however a straight edge band and straight edge is another offshoot of the punk scene that ties into hardcore quite a bit.

everything is connected. everyone has there own mentality. there will always be someone who disagrees with you. once you recognize this you reallize that when you argue all you are really doing is stating your oppinion which everyone is entitled to. but what most people fail to reallize is that their oppinion doesnt matter. my oppinion doesnt matter and neither does yours. but thats just my oppinion. lol. :P

how can you say that isnt "in the least bit punk"? I've been into punk rock for seven years. Alot of street punk and crust kids just dress like that...I dont, i just wear t-shirts and shit. But I dont get how you can say a kid in plaids and studs has nothing to do with punk rock...Im gonna have to agree with Havok on that one....

I pretty much agree with the rest of what you said, but i have NEVER heard minor threat, black flag, bad brains, earth crisis, youth of today, or gang green refered to as thrash. EVER. Punk yes, thrash no.

And by like 83 or 84 people were calling music hardcore and not punk anymore...Youth of Today was DEFINATLY not a punk band. They were a youth crew hardcore band and actually wanted to distance themselves from the punk scene. Earth Crisis is more metal than hardcore too...I dont really know why you included a 90's vegan hardcore/metal mosh band on your list...not really a good way to get your point across. You had some good points and I understood where you were comming from, just terrible examples.

Hardcore was just an angrier form of punk. If anything, a lot of metal bands were influenced by hardcore bands, i.e. Slayer being influenced by DRI and Verbal Abuse. I mean, if you wanna talk about the different progressions of hardcore, yeah, 90's metalcore (and beyond) was highly influenced by metal (obviously), but hardcore is what it is. Even today there are tons of bands who are more on the punk side of hardcore than the metal side (Fucked Up, Government Warning, Direct Control, Restless Youth, etc).

Oh, and the term "Youth Crew" should only be used in reference to Youth of Today and bands related to them. "Youth Crew sounding" is something else, though.

And this discussion is pointless. Who really cares if a band is a punk band or a hardcore band, a metal band or a hardcore/metal band. It doesnt fucking matter what their genera is. Ill correct people if they say As I Lay Dying is a hardcore band...but who fucking cares if somebody calls Minor Threat a punk band instead of a hardcore band. Its basically the same thing...

music is music your into something or your not let it go. music is to be enjoyed, its not suppsoed to be a competition. for example, i got to a lot of hard core shows and like grindcore shows, and i always hate going to them because its a bunch of scene/hard core kids kids trying to be more scene.hardcore then the other kids. its a never ending cycle: emo kids try to be scene kids, scene kids try to be hard core, hard core kids try to be possy. and then when i tell people that i enjoy more than one genre of music because its music and i keep an open mind they look down their nosses at me... like you cnat go to a metal show if you like oi punk....who made up these rules?

you can go to any show you want to. just dont go and act stupid cause you'll get your ass beat. plenty of nerdy ass crusties go to hardcore shows and nothing happens. but when they start to get stupid and say stupid shit, thats when their friends have to carry them outta the show cause theyre knocked the fuck out(ive witnessed this alot of times)

and to the kid who said Hatebreed was Hatecore, are you stupid? seriously

is hatecore even a real term?

Hatebreed is just a good CT hardcore band(well, they used to be before all kinds of shitty mall metal kids started listening to them cause they saw a few Hatebreed t-shirts in hot topic. that and they just started to not be as good in recent times)

Most kids in the scene that have any brains in their head realize that punk and hardcore are connected. But around here its not just "one big counter culture". That seems like it should be true in theory...but in a lot of scenes, including where Im from, the punk and hardcore scenes arnt very united. Theres no animosity between the two, but theres usually punk shows and then hardcore shows. Not really a mix of the two. Its starting to be mixed more now, but the facts are that hardcore and punk rock arnt the same thing and they dont necessarily go hand in hand like you'd think they should. At least not in the midwest.

I'll give you that, the two do tend to clash. I used to live in California and you'd never see a punk rock kid at a hardcore show.

But since I've moved back to where I am now we tend to mix our shows a lot and it's awesome to see a mix of the two and everyone getting along.

And all real hardcore or punk kids who write are cool in my book.
