I used to practice Tae Kwon Do, until I achieved my 3rd Dan black belt. Now am self teaching Jeet Kune Do and Muy Thai. What do you guys practice or know, if any?

did Muy Thai for a few months. never got too into it, good work out though and its good to know the proper technique in throwing a kick or punch.
MegamanX
12-20-2005, 04:56 AM
Yeah, i'd hope any martial art teaches you that though. A punch isnt a punch without the snap of the wrist/elbow when you connect. First fight I ever got into, I tried to use tae kwon do strictly, got my ass whooped for a while, and realized how you fight in the streets too.

Yeah the muy thai is the fighting style they use in Ong Bak. Thats like the best fighting movie ive seen since Bruce Lee's Kiss of Death. I think thats the one with Kareem Abdul Jabaar as one of the 4 masters in this tower he has to go up. But the muy thai in Ong Bak is like wayyy hardcore monk style

NeO.Skunkkr1
02-02-2006, 07:24 PM
ehhh if hes a korean grandmaster i dont think its very likely he would be teaching in canada, unless it is different for your art the grandmaster is usually one man and is usually the highest ranked in that art, he is the one who was had all of the arts lineages handed down to him, but then again our martial arts are probabbly very different, just be careful with who you train with there are tons of martial arts frauds out there
Havoc411
02-02-2006, 07:58 PM
if the grand master(or local highest ranking person) isnt at your tournaments or belt tests then its prolly not a real martial arts practice
NeO.Skunkkr1
02-02-2006, 08:29 PM
ehhh it depends, for us there is only one grandmaster and he lives in japan, teachers are encouraged to go to japan atleast once a year to stay connected with his current teachings, and there isnt really any tournaments since it is a combat martial art and you cant really break somebodies neck or any of that fun stuff in a tournament. and for rankings my instructor doesnt need his instructor to be there for it, rank isnt really a big deal in our art as it is in some other arts thats why we just wear a green belt up until we get to black (there are still 10 rankings to go through as a green belt, these are called kyu grades, once you reach blackbelt you reach the dan grades, and there are 10 of those) blah blah i could go on and on about it but yeah i love ninpo taijutsu

stupid threads like this stay open when good ones are closed. makes no sense, this has nothing to do with graff, or anything interesting at all.
oh, and Chuck Norris' girlfriend once asked him "how much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood?" He responded with " Don't ever rhyme in the presence of Chuck Norris", then he roundhouse kicked her in the throat. Immediately after he said "don't fuck with chuck"...7 years later when Chuck was thinking about the irony of what he said his laughter created a shock wave that made everyone within a 100 kilometer radius go deaf.

02-10-2006, 02:38 AM
I've been taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 4 years. It's pretty good.
Wing chun is pretty dope, and in theory, it's an EXCEPTIONAL martial art. And i ahve numerous friends that have been training for years. The only problem is taht the theories are so abstract taht it takes nearly a decade of training in the art before it truly becomes instictual and applicable to any fight. I've fought wing chunners, and if you just rush them they get scared. Not to mention that crooked thing they do with their legs that's suppsoed to stop them from being knocked over . .. it only works against kicks. For a grapler, it's simply begging to be used as a two leg takedown. Additionaly, i've found that wing chunners completely lack ground technique and most certainly cannot defend from there.
Need an example?

My tae kwon do instructor was the only grandmaster in the midwest. He was an eighth degree black belt, with ninth being the maximum, we couldnt compete because he taught the old Korean style, while now American competitions use the reformed american style. I think the title grandmaster pertains after you have achieved a certain rank, it doesnt mean you are the top master in the world. But any martial art sucks if you dont know how to street fight in the first place. First fight I was in, I got my ass whooped because I was just trying to do Tae Kwon Do. That was funny shit, still won in the end though, thought I was gonna have to take on a bunch of kids one by one, but once they saw their friend get his ass beat, they all took off. What a merry birthday it was. No bullshit

grades dont mean anything.
and how the hell is karate not a practical fighting style??!!
chuck norris does karate, you can see it in his katas and forms
you gotta take into account though, hes an actor
when youre fighting in tournaments or on the street, youre not gonna stand there and start doing forms.
im just saying, alot of karate has alot of impractical shit in it, and unless youre really really good or your opponant isnt a good fighter, youre not gonna be the better of the match.
like, for alot of the shit you do, such as punches and blocks, youre leaving a whole shit load of yout body open, even if youre in stance and sideways. if your blow dosent connect or you dont block well enough, if the other person has any sence in fighting at all they can land a nasty blow.
its just like boxing. in early MMA fights before everyone was well rounded, boxers would go in and they'd dip and weave and shit. now, in boxing thats fine and a good was not to get hit, but if youre not fighting in a boxing rind with boxing rules, if you dip inder a jab. yorue getting a face full of leg.
thats more the point i was trying to get across.

breaking boards is fun
but its not fun when your sensei makes the whole class walk to the lumberyard and carry huge planks of 3 quarter inch thick pine all the way back, then having you cut them into boards
for my last belt test i had to break 2 boards, but there was 2 pieces of broken board in between them, making like, a small box kind of
so it was like
Board
|
\/space
Board
it was between the backs of 2 chairs
downward chopped that shit *****
you say karate is impractical yet you break boards?
''boards dont hit back''

keep in mind, i took Tang Soo Do 4 years ago, and its not Karate either. its not an American Martial Art, its actually the Korean military's fighting style which is taught in their basic training. so it is definately a practical fighting style, cause its more of a combat martial art.
board breaking was only used in belt tests and sometimes done in tournaments with like, rediculous shit people had to break.

Karate isn't gay. It's not the best. But it's still insane. depends what kind you take. Ninjitzu is cooll...as is jujitzu
Karate... has a theory of "Stand there as I wind up this punch". Pretty much any martial art with a rehersed moves such as Tea, Tang, and Wing chung.
I'd have to say Mauy Thai, Brazilian Jujistu and Western Boxing work the best.

thats more skill than anything, and you ever see how long those guys have to wind up to do that shit?
they stand there for like, 30 seconds getting themselves ready whle the guy just stands there waiting to get hit in the stomach
and actually Karate is a form of martial art that centers around hitting people in pressure points, not "knocking the shit out of someone"

yeah man, leg kicks are amazingly efective.
muy thai is alot about hitting people with elbows forearms knees and shins as well as the usual feet and hands.
feet and hands are alot less effective than elbows and knees
and i definately wouldnt say that most martial arts are centered around hitting pressure points. thats really only karate and a few other styles. alot of martial arts use pressure points with certain techniques (like when you dig into people with your elbows in BJJ, but thats sort of frowned upon outside of NAGA) but theyre not centered around that
