so what, you're going to give every toy step-by-step instructions on how to get good? everyone should be developing their own style, you telling them what to do is them developing YOUR style. you can only give vague advice. shouldnt criticize graff? people mentally criticize graff every time they see it, im saying people should look around them, compare their work to others, and be their own critic. the only way to improve is to practice, and all i could say to those people was go simple and get your fuckin 3-d straight....was i supposed to hold their hand and tell them "yeah guys, its going great"

by the way...anime is not respected in the art community. it is played out, and it is extremely unoriginal. its fine for a little entertainment, but unless you do something truly amazing with it, it's just some pop-art that will not get you accepted into any credible art institution.

ah well, have fun with that then. fact is that anime is very formulaic. bodies are drawn a certain way, faces are drawn a certain way. there is room for personal flair, but not a lot. graffitti is fully respected in the art community. as long as its original and pleasing, its no less respected than anything else. graffitti isnt hated and disrespected by everyone, and yes, many professional artists have an interest in it.

i dont really care how long you&#39;ve been drawing anime, because chances are it still doesnt look any different from something 20 people drew in japan 10 years ago.

which is the reason art institutes will not accept you based on an anime portfolio. in fact, OCAD (probably second most respected art school in canada behind Emily Carr, or tied, or whatever) specifically asked that no more than 1 of 15 entries be anime because they just dont want to see it. it tells them absolutely NOTHING about the person applying or their personal style. ive seen people that could draw "perfect" anime but absolutely nothing else. why? because anime is easy, bottom line. sure, i enjoy some anime movies and such, but not because i find them artistically good.

and way to go with that last sentence there. im sure you would make me look like an idiot, so i should stick to what i (supposivly) know.

MANY skools wont accept you if youre work is mainly graffiti or a comic style (including anime of course). thats cuz alot of those art skool are some kind of bullshit. i know alot of ppl who have went to art skool. and very few found it positive. u get better grades on how well u can critic or explain art. alot of very good artists get less points cuz they cant give good reasons for their art or they dont copy the style of the masters. alot of art skools make carbon copies.

its visually pleasing, but not exactly creative. i have seen those exact same faces i dont know how many times posted on deviantart.com by self labeled anime artists. i stay away from computer art because i think its not nearly as...well...artistic. when you can have a machine layer and colour your shit all nicely without having to worry about any mistakes, you&#39;re taking something away.

not creative. bit me. i have my own style. i have left a forum once for like 6 months and i came back under a different username. i posted a few drwings and every1 knew it was me. so dont say im not creative and i dont have my own style. anime is the very basis of creativity compared to real life drawing. we are taking something comple simplifying it to the extreme and then restylizing it. dont thing cuz i do anime i dont know anything about realism. you have to know real anatmoy todo decent anime.

except that judging from what you posted, you know how to draw exactly ONE kind of face, and ONE body type. you think that shits creative because people knew it was you? that was because you&#39;re the only person posting pink and baby blue anime sketches. im uploading my portfolio, then we&#39;ll see about "creativity"

bullshit. you have absolutely no idea what im talking about. im not talking about art programs like at U of T where it is mostly art theory and history, nobody gives a shit about that. you&#39;ll be lucky to touch a paintbrush in your first 3 years. im talking about places like OCAD, Emily Carr, and other hands-one art colleges/universities (whether technical or not). and yes, they accept graffitti. in fact, as one of the interviewers was going through my sketchbook (none of my entries was graff) he actually commented on the "development of handstyles."

and no, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with "how well you can critic or explain art" "or cope the style of the masters" to make "carbon copies." you clearly have no clue what it is to go somewhere and be taught every technique you could imagine. first year foundation studies alone should leave you knowing how to sculpt, paint, and draw in every medium something in front of you. from those skills one goes on to develop their own style, and they are now able to paint it if they feel like it. This is serious learning, not some random bullshit you half knew about and made up the rest.

The following is my "portfolio" (which sounds fancier than it is), which recently got me accepted into OCAD. If you don&#39;t know what that is, you probably don&#39;t need to. Besides two or three submissions which were old sketches that i cleaned up, everything here was drawn, cut out, and mounted in under three days (not meant to impress although i impressed myself, but that&#39;s why some of them look sort of rushed or messy). The point of the portfolio was to demonstrate the horizon of the applicants abilities (anime not accepted, graffitti was fine). I basically had a million ideas, but because of time constraints (i was given my interview date only 2 weeks before it happened, and i spent most of that time fuckin around) wasnt able to do many of them, so this is what i came up with (trying to be as creative as possible):

Some good anime titles to look out for would be Princess Mononoke, Cowboy Bebop, Spirited Away (extremely creative, I would say) and Ghost in the shell.

Maybe after you watch some good anime you will think differently about it, and even if you don’t, you will have some solid ground on which to argue.

who gives a shit what the art community respects? anyone who wants to make a living off of art. do i dislike anime because they do? no, i just dislike it for the same reason. ive said it all before, those who know agreed. graffitti was not accepted because the school didnt want to be associated with something ILLEGAL. now that its blown up, they recognize it as something legitimate, done legally and acceptable by a credible institute. and im sure they would have accepted and actually like graffitti-type canvasses even back then as long as they were nice. anime being unacceptable has nothing to do with legality, it has to do with anime not being good enough to cut it.

and i have seen lots of anime, and liked some. ghost in the shell blew away pretty much any other one ive seen...that doesnt mean people drawing anime get any respect from me.

YM (the guy who does flcl, evangelion, nadia and some other anime) is an awesome artist. you should see the anime acrylic paintings (i bought his art book). that guy has been doing anime for a long time now. and even now he stil finds its not good enought. its not quite at the level he wants it to be. so hes still practicing mad. the guy draws all day for a living and his work is very appreciated.

colour schemes...man you just have to have aneye. generally itsgood to have contrasting colours or at least levels of brightness between thefaces of your letters and everything else, just makes it clearer and nicer onthe eyes. as forcolour combos...that&#39;s all personal preference, but generally analagous and complimentary colours are a safe bet?.

i appreciate the technical skills professional anime takes. i dont appreciate the creativtiy (or lack thereof). no, your shit is not unique, but obviously you&#39;ve chosen to not accept this. you can draw hands and feet? big fucking deal...if i remember correctly,allmy realistic drawings have anatomically correct hands and feet, thats not an accomplishment, that&#39;s EXPECTED.

how did i get good? practice. and i started studying myself and ppl for body structure. during my first year i practiced on average 4 hours a day... mad practice will get u good fast. as long as u keep at it. its been abit over a year that i do anime by now...

try finding out what a skull actually looks like before drawing one. seriouisly...all you have to do is look up some photos of human skull structure, or even just feel your own head/face to see where where the protrusions etc. are

I try and spend atleast a min of 1-2 hours DAILY on some kind of art related homework whether it is painting, sketching, digital, etc.

Some days get 15 minutes before I hit a mind block and some days take 5-6 hours of my time doing what I like to do.
