man...i shudder to think about what you could do with a nice assortment of chartpaks. they blow prismas right outta the water, in my opinion.

as for that seahorse....the illustration is great, but for me it has the same fault as the rest of your pencil drawings. the shading is light, and it gives your sketches a sort of Rococo-esque quality (meaning sort of airy, fluffy, unserious). i think it would benefit a lot from some darker values and areas of high contrast for depth and overall tone.

i personnaly prefer prismas to chartpaks...then again depends for what...

chartpaks flow more but also bleed alot more... and i mainly do small detailed work so i prefer the prismas, plus double tipped prismas are the cheapest (where i get them on special lol&#33;)

i found that chartpaks bleed about the same, if not less, on the same type of paper. the thing i love about chartpaks is that they have better ink. with prismas, the ink dries so fast that if you do not do your fade within the first few seconds, the pigments will not properly combine to make the middle tone. ive found that the ink from chartpaks stays wet in the paper far longer, allowing me to do nice fades even with colours that arent closely analagous.

maybe i just didnt spend enough time with prismas. but i found that right away i could do better colour blending with chartpaks.

they bleed less? maybe on good paper i just use em on stickers and on like norm puter paper... also on prismas i rarely use the large side...

do they make double or triple tipped chartpaks? my artstore that i goto doesnt carry them but i was wondering if they did... and ya prismas dry really fast... thats why i keep my blender in my left hand lol&#33; i outta retry chartpaks now that im more used to markers (been using prismas for bout a year after my first markers wich where chartpaks)

but if i cant find double tips i dunno =P since well i dont do nething big... maybe for backgrounds n stuff... humm.... lol

heh..."legitimate art". that makes me warm and fuzzy on the inside. yes, car2nist, you really need to teach yourself how to draw people, at least vaguely, before you&#39;ll get any good at illustrating. but im not really here to destroy any dillusions he may or may not have, what i actually wanted to know is what people think of my pen/pencil work/rendering of existing things. the pen brings out a much more hurried, sketched style than the pencil, but that was also due to time constraints (only ~1.5 hrs on the model at most, over 3 hours spent on the still-life composition so far).

good luck (no sarcasm). if you&#39;re not used to &#39;traditional&#39; drawing, be ready for some heavy frustration and ego-lowering when you discover just how difficult it is to render things in front of you realistically, with attention to detail. its great that you&#39;re interested though...if you can overcome the "oh fuck, why am i here?" that comes with art class for first-timers, you will improve be leaps and bounds. you will look at everything around you in a totally different way, and it will help you artistically with absolutely everything (graffitti, illustration, design/composition, fine art...)

well um your art teacher was wrong lol. if u can draw realism then u can draw realism. it doesnt mean u are creative enuff to bust out a wildstyle. it doesnt mean u can do cubism etc...

realism is often a starting point for other art styles... so its more of a base then the ultimate rendition.

for example my anime... my main prob with why my anime isnt too good is cuz i suck at realism and havent studied anatomy much. therefore i have a hard time drawing bodies and faces under different camera views and poses etc...

also my 3d graff isnt so great cuz i havent explored different textures or light scattering and reflection much... at least perspective never posed much of a prob for me... and since i used todo alot of computer 3d it helped practice that skill.

square -- looks pretty good, you just need to crispen the edges of the still life, smooth it out, and add a little more contrast between highlights and shadows, if you have time, try to make the background dark or straight black, it will make the objects come forward
and the model looks pretty good, thats an interesting shawing style you have used
dont listen to car2, hes a cartoonist, and a bad one at that, and i dont think if hes even out of highschool making him a cartoonist wannabe, foe was right, they are low man on the pole, its like the t-ball of basball, lol

99.9% of the people on this planet. go have someone sit in front of you for exactly 30 minutes, draw them, and see what you come up with in that time. no using a photograph, that is far too easy. im betting it will be pretty far from the real thing. make that *really* far. and im sure there are some 10th graders out there who do better work than i do. ive only really been doing this for about 10 months. i didnt take any real art instruction previous to that (gr 9 and 10 art was a joke, really).

yes.


square: in a few yrs i think youll be able to call youerself &#39;decent to good&#39; at realism. as u said youve only been at it for 10 months... so ya still a long way togo... an art teacher who was 70 and had been drawing for bout 50 yrs still wasnt satisfied with his art... and in a few quick lines he could represent a human that looked and felt realistic...

and no realism isnt the starting point for all art styles. of course we are influenced by what we see (duh) but thats not what realism is about. realism is representing reality as best u can. i can do graff without trying to represent what i see for one second.

other art styles take reality and deform it... like say anime.

others take it apart and reconstruct it (cubism)

etc theres so many diff things... but u dont have to be good at realism at all to be good at some art forms, this being a graff forum im sure u have realised that by now...

I like the letter style still, keep improving on it though, and work on the bubbles and some of the sizes. I actually like the character too.
