I wanted to try another character. It's an octopus. Hopefully you can tell. :p

I need to get some practice fading colors so I messed around here and there on the tentacles. Mostly on the edges, going from dark to light to try and give it more of a roundish look. I was using a gold dot.

I used a German Outline 2 to outline the tentacles with the dots in Evil Olive. I think I was going for some kind of suction cuppy look even though I know they only have them on the bottom.

I had a lot of trouble with the eyes.

Still looking for looks on hands/feet. And now eyes. Anything helps.

Lay on the crits... I need to know what to work on.

yolko1 - not bad. work on the look of the characters front right paw though.
domakesaythink - i like the painting, it sends out a darkish feeling... but the black and yellow work nice together. and the next character's really creative. always loved the mask idea.
anion - the octo is cool, coloring looks nice. and i actually like the eyes, they're simple. somethings outta funk with the tentacles but idk, ive never tried an octopus before... maybe try like showing a little of the underneath suction cup side on just a few of the tentacles next time? cuz they might be visible.

I like to mix my characters in with pieces...havent made any attempts to just sit around and play with characters yet though. I dont know words come to mind and then characters spawn from em. What makes some of you ppls get ideas for characters

Yo Tryp, thanks for the insight. I feel the same about the tentacles too. I think it's cause they're all inconsistent and the ends are round.

I did another one today. This time around I brought the tentacles to a point and used a black dot to outline the tops of the tentacles and used that GO2 dot effect for the suction cups on just the bottom of the tentacles. I think it helped.

I wanted to try a little more fading with the goldies. I didn't have any Molotow White so I didn't even both with eyes. I didn't mess with any of the dots in the tentacles for like extra flare or detail either. Just tryna' get the basic design stuck in my brain.

It'll be a couple days before I can get a pic cause I did it at a friends

I'm gonna' blackbook it a little and try and show the underside of a tentacle or two. With more of a hollow round hole to show the depth and keep the little bubble effect for the side outlines.

I made like 6 sets of eyes before I finally settled on those. Lol.

Oh yeah - That blonde chick is sick. It reminds me of that old Dick Tracy comic book style. Like how they did all those little dots but it looked like a solid fill from a foot away. Something about those colors. It's not dotted but it just hit me like a freight train the second I layed eyes on it.

What makes some of you ppls get ideas for characters
I have to be working on a sketch and notice similar features in shape and size to real life objects or characters. That way, you know that it 'fits. So just take a look at what you're working with and make adjustments according to how close the shape/size fits in relation to the piece.

I personally look at the fundamental shapes that make up the character, squares circles etc and then kinda build the character up, then again I like weird looking chars

other than that i kinda randomly scribble and doodle on paper until I maybe recognise a face or something and build it up, It is like layering drawing

Art threat...not feeling it. Clean up your lines for starters...The eyes look angry, but the mouth and eyebrows are saying something else? Pick a solid emotion and build the whole face with it in my opinion.

The main trick to a profile is to keep things in proportion to the head... Like :

The length of the ear from top to bottom is the same length as the nose(normally) and normally the lips( top to bottom and side to side) are the same size as the eye socket.
It's not my best example but it's more or less proportioned.

domakesaythink- that masked character is sick. the first one is good too its just not the type of thing that appeals to me
b squared- that char is sweet but the shirt collar looks a little goofy for some reason and some of the suit jacket pinstriping but nothing major.
blacktodafuture- i like the char at the bottom right of the page its simple but looks good anyways
Turkeydinner- the face looks good but the body needs work. the face is really detailed but the body is too simple
djmesican- thats legit but i think that whole style of char is gettin played out
alts- that last one is sick. love it
loki- the zombunnie is a cool concept but i say work on it more and clean up the lines and shit
klic- i think you should lose that thing on his face.. it makes him look like an older balder version cyclops from xmen lol
art threat- not feeling it either it looks like you're trying to have too much going on with the piercings and it just doesnt fit in my opinion. clean it up a bit

umm ryser, i like the fact that ur trying to make ur chars more individual with the x legs but id also maybe give it a neck and some proper legs. try tank tracks or tentacles or watever if u cant do legs.

To Kaiser: Your first one is pretty sick. Her left breast should recede in to the distance a little more, maybe even behind her arm since her arm seems to be the foremost part of the drawing. But your coloring is good on it. And someone already said this, but make the face more feminine on the second one.

-Sinn-: thanks man i'll work on it.... The only thing that catches me on yours is her tits and mouth. They're flopped to there own sides while she's arching her back, when a gal's in that pose they look like teardrop shaped (not sagging mind you) for tits that big the slop should start at the collar bone. Her mouth just looks like a circle, try making her bite her lip or make the mouth a gumdrop shape, circle mouths look flat and for an anime-esc look it doesn't work to have a 2 d mouth on her....

I use everything I got. Too cheap to buy a full, set, I've got a couple of everything....
Sharpie, Micron, Pentel, Touch, Prisma, Copic, Deco, Sharpie paint, Chartpak, Pilot,...some of the background is a shitty watercolor set ive got, but the yellow, green, blue, pink streaks all over are just copics that I fucked around with a colorful blender.

Kaiser - That's awesome. Love the bird in the lower right corner. It just screams acid trip. You could lost in there for hours.

Wanted to try this guy out on concrete. I had some trouble getting the proportions right. Which they aren't at all. I thought it'd be easier to do it bigger than the practice canvas I built but it didn't seem it. Did it with a NY Fat.

tryp- nice, although i think that the L shaped lines above the girls lips arent necessary. the tentacles are awesome tho.

thanks fam, yeah it was watercolor and ink for those. just wish i could find enough time to do more, but im working on that.

sinn: that is dope, im trying to get better at drawing women myself and it can be difficult because they actually have to look presentable, but for crits i totally agree with murphy's law. oh and yay for pierced nips.

murphy's law: i liked this idea. it seems that you're pretty aware of where to add lines for the wrinkling in clothing. what i could see that would be something to work on would be the thigh area and mid waist area. when covering one side of the drawing with my hand it looks fine but together the proportions look a little off?

kaiser71: man i miss filling pages up like this. lots going on with just color and ideas. im fuckin loving the bottom half of that shit too. the colors on the bird and snake coming off work so well, you need to keep that up. and that telephone pole with the powerlines is too nice, especially the wood coloring. as for the other painting, or drawing, actually, what medium is this? i thought it was a pic scrolling down at first lol. the scene looks great, you really captured the grime, dark and dirtyness. cant wait to see it finished.

anion: pretty sick man. better than my characs seem to come out using spray. like you already said though, proportions. but im sure thats nothing practice wont solve w/ the same guy, then youll be able to do it fast and probably with ur eyes closed.

fetusr: sweet little character you got right here. i dig the mohawk loose skullhead idea and it expresses the emotion pretty well, and its intention. if you like the guy def. try some diff. positions or actions. maybe even one after the other. im not sayin become a cartoonist but mixing it up with one character from diff. perspectives lets you get more comfortable for any situation ya know

halfgangstashit: haha go for it man, id love to check that shit out if u ever do. your charac up there is nast. my favorite is his head and hair i guess. it looks like you were pretty comfortable with it and the proportions seem nice. the simple is super tight too, with him coming out the top. clean drawing on that surface too, it could even be mistaken as a sticker in some parts.

I was just looking at that noose around the bears neck. It's pretty good. All of the characters have good detail. I really like that cartoony evil style.

You don't have to go for circle shaped eyes, just add some lines to make it look like the character has eyelids and such. The tongue needs tweaking though, looks kinda rough.

xan - i think the concept of the dude is good, but i think you could definitely clean it up a bit. the head looks great for the most part and i really like the detail on his shoes but i don't know if the no arm/no neck thing is really working.

You use curved lines to show where the round parts are rather then flat straight lines... You use perspective lines to show the difference in foreground and background (basically show whats closer and further away.).....stuff like that...

the drips are a unneeded
dank-love these guys, only thing is with the top 1 id make it less muscular.
murphy-love the clown, facial expression is awesome. dont like the tongue on the monster at the top but maybe make it smaller or get rid of it completely

Upstate- keep it up, try shading more

Kre1- i don't know why but i don't like your dudes face, but it is clean, so if you like it, keep workin with it, but the clothes and stuff need to be cleaned up, if you want an idea of what i mean, just look at some anime characters, it'll help you on shading the bends of the baggy clothes
