Its pathetic when new jacks are going over people that have been painting for as long as those same kids have been alive. If i may, on the subject of wheat paste:

Taking a stroll through Miami graffiti is always a refreshment regarding south Florida's stranglehold on the graffiti scene. It always stood apart from anywhere else in the country as far as style went. Florida and New York have always had an intimate relationship and with that followed an enmeshment of culture. A few factors such as the Florida sun, the mafia governed corrupt political powers and the the flagrant Latin population; could of all had something to do with one of the most unique development of style there is out of anywhere in the country. I would like to celebrate anyone who ever grew up doing graffiti and not knowing there was a word for it, anyone who as they became older equally developed there style to match there complex individuality. The very strive to maintain a sub social status by writing there name more elaborately and prolifically, portraying a remarkable sensitivity to color and the ability to become invisible when needed to perform outrageous feat's that only few people could ever understand and others left baffled; all of this is a celebration of where you came from and you do this by painting it thus establishing the style of your temporal location, "South Florida graffiti". My hat goes off to my fellow transient artists that spent so many years training in the art of style and incognito- but only to the ones that actually applied that knowledge.

I understand the very thought of the amount of persistence and originality may dissuade you from ever becoming any of that i mentioned. In this electronic day and age we live in of ultra fast paced attention spans and instant gratification; it would seem ironic that the archaic idea of plotting and hand painting monikers would deem the concept ridiculous- but then again here we are. Certain questions of motive arrive when i see ... what it is i see. No disrespect to the art of wheat pasting because that in itself is in a league of its own and frequently celebrated by graphic designers that share the same need to express themselves as we do but on a different political/conceptual plane. As i mentioned i think it belongs in a league of its own because it carries a strict "concept" that some may find absent from traditional "subway" based graffiti. ONE of the concepts behind traditional graffiti is that it is perpetuated by the name itself; focusing nearly all efforts around the name, style and placement there of. It is quite the contrary to stenciling and wheat pasting because few times can a wheat paste rely on its aesthetics alone; especially when it is as one dimensional as the paper its printed on; so the idea or originality stands up solely in creating an interesting conduit to the possible civilian interpretation, pencil pushing legislator, artist, appreciators of art and of coarse art critic.

All this being said, i have to point out that creating a generic piece of clip art and tossing your "nom de guerre" at the top or bottom as your instant ghetto pass to urban identification; then running to kinkos with a $20 dollar bill in hand; and finally finding random placement to reach what i can only compare the similarity to the gratification a novice toy would get with a scrawled unreformed tag; but free of the reality of destroying the society you thrive in- out of fear or consequence or moral complication. Funny how you can trivialize the idea of everything i mentioned in the first paragraph and reduce it to weekend to run over to the nearest high profile location and spending the least amount of time as possible to put capriciously place meaningless expensive photo copies up so you can scream your identity to the world; then give directions and photo evidence just in case people didn't catch it. Energy, time and money wasted from lack of a focused thought, life experience or was it something most everyone lacks- personal criticism.
