i love the rhymesayers guys. but im sorry to say.
atmoshpere. well slug, is selling out. his shit is what it used to be.
aesops shit is starting to go waaaaay downhill as well.
eyedea turned emo. he played an emo punk show up here earlier this year. shit was fucking wack.
MF, and SOul position which is blueprint and D2, arent on that record label.
and finally sage francis is going bitch on us too. his shit is heavy dont get me wrong. but hes straying away from hip hop and going back to straight slam poetry. which is fine, dont get me wrong. i went to one of his slam shows. shit was illin, but, as a hip-hop head, he should keep making hip hop records.
def jux, battle axe, and stones throw blow those guys out of the water.
with the exception of brother ali. one of my top 5 favorite rappers.

You have no idea what your talking about.
Sage was always a slam poet, its not like he was before, stopped for a while to do hip-hop and then started again. His stuff has always been fresh.
And Aesop is trying some experimental shit which isnt my favorite, dont get me wrong, but at least hes expanding his sound. I cant stand artists that make the same album 10 times.
DOOM is Rhymesayers. Soul Position is too.
Madvillain is Stones Throw, and DOOM did some shit on his own label.
RJD2 is Def Jux.
The only thing I can agree with is what you said about Slug.

with sage. i KNOW he started as a slam. but in terms of the discussion. a hip hop record label. i jsut feel that as a hip hop artist, he isnt doing what he could at his full potential as a rapper. but dont get me wrong. i understand he was always a slam. sheesh

i understand madvillian is stones throw. as with peanut butter wolf, vik vaugn, lord quas, lord geedorah, etc. and MF is more stones than rhymesayers sir.

saying that slug sold out is absolutely childish,
it's like you lost your little secret favorite rapper and you're upset about it.
how did he sell out?
dude's been making the same music, same style,
but now they have the resources to make videos and market him as well as the other acts they decide to bring on.
are you going to say ali sold out when you see his cd in the new release section at best buy? or when you see the new video?
these guys have been holding our whole scene up here in minneapolis,
and the midwest in general, for the past 10 years.
they're some of the most dedicated and sincere people i've ever come across.

slug is not rapping in the same style. and im not saying he sold out in the sense he has the resources available to make videos, etc.
like i said ali is one of my favorite rappers, and the fact he made it on the best buy new release rack is amazing. great for ihm.
same goes to slug. videos. GREAT. top 10 music charts. EVEN BETTER. im not saying he sold out taht way. what im saying is that his style is changing. listen to god loves ugly for example. or sevens travels. those records were amazing. the sound was so full and pure and his rhymes were so natural.
now though, with the rise of his success, his style is changing, and his rhymes about not getting girls, being broke, all that stuff, feels forced to me.
dont get me wrong sir, rhyme sayers is an amazing label, and they are doing their thing, i am just a fan of other labels slightly more than i used to be.
oh and i forgot to add, aesop is def jux, not rhymesayers.
and qn5 is an amzing label as well

saying sage is going bitch is a totally off the wall statement. ive gone to something close to 10-15 sage shows over the past 5 years, and they keep getting better and better. like someone before me said, he's always been a slam poet, and that style is what his music's been based on for years. his shit started sounding more hip hop because he's been able to afford a better production and mixing team since personal journals and aoi. i think if anything its a credit to him that he's trying to bring more of that raw style that got him big in the first place. no doubt he's not the best free verser in the world, but you wont find better put together lyrical content anywhere in the hip hop community then on sage's tracks. props to him for bringing that real raw hip hop school to kids raised on icp and other generic garbage.

i actually said that not jetblack.
when i said he went bitch, that was too harsh, and obviously intended in the way that i didnt want it to.
we are talking about hip hop right now in this topic. not slam. so terfore, as a rapper, i feel he is strayoing from it, which is fine, as he had always been a slam. do you understand what im trying to say> if not, then just drop that statement....

slam poetry is tied very tightly to hip hop, i dont think you need to seperate the two.
EsKoNeR!!
04-13-2007, 04:30 PM
slam is tied very close. i LOVE slam.
have you ever heard tonedeff speak? his poems are incredible, all freestyled slam as well.
and buddy wakefield, his shit is incredible too!! thats who was with sage when i saw them perform.
its just hard to really explain what i am trying to for some reason. because when i try to explain what i mean, people are taaking it the wrong waaaaay. meh oh well.

but that stuff just comes off as silly internet-objecting,
i've been listening to his music for the past 8 years and it's all a natural progression, nothing has change dramatically or overnight.
if there was any change, it was after overcast! and the lucy ford EP's,
and it was ANT.
his album's all seem to be about one general (and still vague) topic,
but everyone perceives everything he does like it's about a female or a relationship.
if anything, there are less songs about girls on the last cd.
the nature, or personality, if you will - in his lyrics has stayed consistent through everything i've ever heard by him. the only thing i'm noticing is that he seems to be getting bored and is messing around with that half-singing thing.
i'm probably just bias and overly defensive,
but they are all good people who deserve the support and success they finally seem to be hitting.

This thead is pretty fuckin dumb...
Ughh..Soul Position is Rhymesayers. As a whole, as a quarter, HOWEVER you wanna slice it Soul Position dropped their album on Rhymesayers. DOOM drops his albums on Rhymesayers.
And as far as Sage goes, I dunno what kind of point your tryin to make but I dont really see a difference between slam and hip-hop. It just depends how close your lyrics get to poetry. Look at an Anticon, their shit is so close to poetry, the distinctions become blurred.
And whoever was saying shit about Slug, listen to Deep Puddle Dynamics and then listen to his new album and try to tell me he's still makin the same music. Fuck that. I didnt hear him bitchin about Lucy on Deep Puddle. And whatever, he found a style that made him popular. And hes goin with it. Good for him.
