2. you dont need different caps to fade shit, some people use just one cap for a whole peice.

3. kare2 you are sooooo wack, dont even talk at all, and having montana platnum, if thats yours in your sige, is not going to help your can control.
"No offense", but why don't you post some of your stuff for us to see too. Instead of just saying why someone's shit is wack, why don't you give some specific reasons why it's wack. Then you could turn putting something down, without reason, into constructive criticism. Also, the person's work in question could possibly be improved as well. Peace.

i feel that you could benefit from looking at some block-letter fonts in microsoft word or whatever you use to see how you could better space your letters....for something that simple theres no need to have them so overlapping/squished together.

its too complex and doesnt look right, im not gunna be an ass, but make it a bit more simple.

KARE 2 ELABERATE
11-02-2004, 02:33 PM
hey thanks for an accual constructive comment, appreciate it

and ya its not really too complex, other then the bottom middle "R" extensions.... maybe if i jus took that out completely , i dunno im gonna work on that style and paint it again

i never tryed a style more then once  i guess well see how that goes

Car2nist
11-02-2004, 02:35 PM
i stick to one style heh, as you can tell by my sketches, i honestly dont care if its repetitive, because when i do spray it, they do come out looking differently, just same letter structure, i dunno, i just love it.

but yea, try something a bit more simple.

Kare... I dont know how long youve been writing, but you seem to show some potential, so Ill throw you the 2 cents i have in my pocket...

Many MANY kids who are starting out make a common mistake, which actually slows down their own progression stylistically, and that is trying a complex abstracted style too soon. I'll explain myself.

In my opinion, painting is much like skateboarding... First you learn to stand on the board and roll without breaking your ass... then you learn to ollie... then a few basic tricks... then come kickflips, grids, etc... but trying to grind a rail before learning how to ollie onto it is asking for a mess....

The same thing goes with writing... A solid wildstyle piece is rooted in solid basic letter forms... You begin with straight letters, and I mean Straight... like helvetica off of the computer. then overlap them a bit... Focus on can control, line quality, and spacing of your letters... An E in your name is completely different than an E in mine, since it is surrounded by different letters... So start by feeling out how your letters interact with those around them... At this point, you should start to slowly abstract your letters in SMALL increments: Bending, variation of size, stretching certain areas, variation of thick and thin to create movement and flow... NO EXTENSIONS YET!!! focus on letters alone... pure style, no bells and whistles just yet... limit your pieces to 3-4 colors... this keeps them simple, and allows you to save paint and do more pieces to practice letters and control... no need for fancy designs if your letters arent there yet... (A good writer can use 2 cans, and burn a beginner who has 30...)

Once you have a firm understanding of your letters, you can start adding a few extensions... at this point, you will see something which many beginners do not see, and that is the beginning (hopefully) of your own style... Although influences can not be avoided, it will be more yours than other kids who skip these steps, since they have skipped an important learning process...

Who cares if you come up with a piece that "looks" like youre getting somewhere, if its just a confusing mess... having no idea how you got there, or where to go next... and an experienced writer can see it a mile away.

So take a month or 2 to actually go back, and start again... put the pride and ego aside... and reap the rewards in the years to come... if graff is something that you are serious about, this will help you become a solid writer who has a true command of his letters and style...

* I usually dont take the time to give long advice, but you seem like someone who actually has a good attitude, and is willing to take advice and learn.... Best of luck, and remember... If you want to be good... at anything, there are no short cuts... you gotta roll up your sleeves and get to work... but if you love it, youll enjoy the process....

KARE 2 ELABERATE
11-02-2004, 08:26 PM
^hey man thanks for takin the time to help me out and give me a few pointers(noone else has <_< ) i really apreciate it, and commin from such an established writer its nice to here u think ive got potential

and accually your completely right, i never really started with the block letters and the simple shit, because when i think of peicing i think of nicely shaped, maybe cemetrical or semi-cemetrical crazy designs and such, and i know that when i try it its not amaizing, but i figure if i keep at it its only gonna get better right?

but i really dont think that peice is too complex, the letters are pretty straight forward, and it jus came together as i was sketching it, mind u when i start sketching i have NO idea how its gonna turn out, i jus start and let it flow

but i understand what your saying and will deffinatly take that to mind, plus it seems like alot of people respect the simplicity

once again i appreciate any and all constructive critisizm, cause its fuckin hard to be perfect

Lester Berns
11-02-2004, 08:34 PM
no problem... I took the time since you seem like a humble person who is open to advice... theres nothing worse than a hot headed tough guy who thinks his shit doesnt stink... One of the keys to progression is knowing that no matter how good you get, you still arent there yet... theres always room for improvement... when I look at my work, I can see all of my errors, Things I couldve changed,
thats the whole point... learning something from every piece... but there are bingo brains out there that think their Gods gift to graffiti, and they will never see their mistakes, and they will never progress...

I said it before, I'll say it again... Attitude is everything, and Id rather paint with a beginner who has his feet on the ground, than some hot air balloon head "king"...

Glad my advice helped a bit...

i think what he was saying is that most writers (who are good people at hart) will be more likely to paint and try to help out kids who have good personalties and actually listen to the advice and use it when there given it because kids who think that there work its flawless and who are close minded and ego maniacs are just plain dicks and no fun to paint with and will end up with less respect and wont get the thumbs up from fonzie

really nice and clean lines! but you should have done more with the color...atleast fade them togehter to contrast the sharp letters and maby the fill on an angle instead of top 2 bottom

Lester Berns

heres a quick tip which will make a huge difference in terms of craftsmanship and overall presentability...

When it comes to rollingpaint, go to lowes or home depot... they always have mistinted gallons which are returned by fussy housewives who cant make up their minds... they go for about 4$ a gallon, and you can always find NICE colors... I usually choose my colors schemes based on what i find that day... This will also save you spray paint, and eliminate the random cloud people make until the can runs out... A color cloud on a white background in my opinion is a poor use of visual space, since the white just looks like dead space, and it makes your piece just look like a sticker placed on a wall... dont treat the wall simply as a surface to slap your piece on... paint INTO your space... use negative space creatively as a style element... you may not understand what im talking about right now, but you will if you stick to it...

Second.... spend the extra dollar and get a 3/4 inch nap rough surface roller... this will help fill all of those brick lines that your roller missed... anytime you have an uneven surface, use one... presentation is half the battle... theres no sense in serving a gourmet meal on a dirty paper plate, so why spend time working on a piece just to put it on a crummy background?

Hope this advice helped a little..............

4$? damn thats good!.. my friend and me a while back went 2 k-mart to but paint *dutch-boy(SP) spraypaint*. and we saw a bucket of black rusto for 5$. onsale..so we got it....

*shameless plug.. i used the left over black paint to do the blackround for the WepOne-Kaloe-Sadis colab on the FBK thread <_<

so right on about the negative space, ges. my favorite pieces use the blank wall and surroundings (pipes, sockets, holes, etc.) creatively and tastefully

but i guess its all skill that i need to aquire, so i should be practicing that kinda stuff

anyways, ill keep that in mind for the next one, i dont think im gonna get around to doin it this weekend, but sometime next week for sure

u know it'll be posted

ya i accually planned on doin something crazy with the purple goin up into the green, but ended up not having enuff paint.... next time........

errrr, i see alot of un clean lines(some thicker in places, lines that look cut pretty sloppily(is that even a word?) and even a few drips, it does look clean.....to the un trained eye.

i see alot of stuff on here that people think is "clean" but take a good look at it and see how incredably wrong they are.

ive never heard of differant "veiws" of being clean, care to give some examples of what these might be? i dotn understand what you're saying.

i know i understand, not everyone is perfect. my point was more that people shouldnt jump to conclusions before looking something over a little more thoroughly.

I never said those lines are perfect.
well dictionary.com defines "clean" as something being without imprefections or blemishes, and im not one to disagree with the dictionary.

now, lets hear what your veiw/definition of clean is.

In my opinion, when I stumble upon a beautiful wall like that (blank, water stains, etc...) , I dont roll it out and piece it... I do a more simplified style, silver and black only... super clean... theres something about a clean silver on an unprimed wall that I love...

11-07-2004, 07:47 PM
It will come with patience and time... Ive been painting 0ver 11 years, and I still dont feel I'm where I want to be with my simple game... A good solid simple is often times more difficult to pull off than a piece... A piece allowsw too many opportunities to disguise poor letters, and distract the viewer... extensions, colors, designs, etc... With a simple, its like standing naked in a crowd... just bare letters with no additional help... just 2 colors, and style... theres no faking a simple... so dont worry... Im still working on it after all these years...

Fine then, its a waste of a "legal wall".

no its not, it will get gone over, walls are walls, paint is opaque, it doesnt matter, at firsti would say "its a waste of paint" but its not, it takes practice, let him do his shit, it doesnt hurt anyone.

le shotgun?

It hurts my eyes. And yes it takes practice, which is why there is paper and pencil, and bridges where no one goes or sees.

now, does it really hurt your eyes THAT bad? brdiges are illegal, maybe he didnt want to risk getting busted until he was actually fully down with graffiti. paper and pencil dont help can control and painting...

Sketching is a crucial step in style development at any stage, although it is only a first one... The amount you will learn from sketching alone is very limited... the only way to truly learn, is to learn from your mistakes on a wall, with paint... While developing styles on paper, it is important to develop spacing, proportion, compostion, and technique on a wall... your painting technique needs to develop at the same rate as your paper styles... Some of you fellas never leave your blackbook... and thats all good if thats what youre into, but in my opinion, a sketch is just a preview for the full length feature film... Is he wasting good wall space? maybe, but it will get gone over, while he learned what he had to learn from that piece, and apply it to the next, and get better one piece at a time... Every writer was once a beginner...so ease up with the tough guy criticisms people.

it sometimes does go through if your useing higher preasure paints, but the cars usualy have that white plastic crap on them they put on wile transporting them to prevent scratches and stuff.

i got chased by rail workers wile painting this, as i was puting the cap on my outline can i looked over and saw headlights and ran,but managed to get back and outline it, shortly after it rolled out, whew.

Two unfinished pictures of one of my latest. Not close to finished in either flickas you see it, alot of shading still isn't done so accuse any shittiness. They are about 15 minutes apart in time. The camera my friend had died and we didn't get a final product flic. I might go back for one though, it turned out nicely.

oh...okay...this really makes no difference to me...i'm not going to switch up my name b/c someone in montreal writes blam as well...as with many writers i may switch my name with time...but currently i enjoy rocking out BLAM...and i'm from southern ontario Kitchener Waterloo area...and i highly doubt i have the same style anyways...

i aslo don't want to see any flix of this other "blam" s stuff...this way no one can say i jack any of his style if i never see his work.

i didn't mean to cause any controversy by posting my flix....just some input on the style...i really only starting getting up and painting just before this past summer and i don't keep up with who's who in the graf scene....i love painting....thats it.

i was saying this not so i could get better flixs...but for the reason of avoiding getting pain on the cars in the future...the majority of the freights that come through this lay up have cars in them or they are oilers which are a bitch to paint...there is a big yard...but its patrolled and there are workers during the day...and pieces done at night never turn out as nice as ones that you can do leisurely and spend time on the detail during the day...so yeah...explaination...make sense?
