Question for all you veterans, when did the Graf scene in Montreal really start?? was ther people writing back in the 80's? i never see any old school Canadian pics? drop some old school knowledge on us and some pics if possible!!!

Montreal's Graffiti scence started in the early 90's!
Flow started in 93 (i think that's the year)
But back in the day VC and HYH crew had montreal on lock!
Castro,Damo,Flow,Loes,Sake...........Then everyone followed and here we are!

there was graffiti in mtl before the 90' but it was only poilitical message like.. fuck authority, or anarchy signs.. useless shit..
i think that the real bombing stuff started with hyh and vc.. they killed the shit everywhere.. and castro was fuckin up.. that guy was crazy on a big run... he got caught though... VC meant vagabond crew.. and for real they were fckin vagabonds man.. lol.. by what iu seen when i went in high school like in 95-96 (grade 7-8) VC VC vC vC everywhere..
i think that castro was the first writer up in montreal.. like all city..
and theres still graffs of him in the city.. that they cant buff. because the spot its to risky to reach..

my cousin (now 28) started a crew back in 86 (Mont Real Crew) with 5 of his buddies, i remember him telling me stories bout when they use to jump on the tracks at Pie IX metro station and tag all over the place!
They never were all city or anything, but they did some stuff back in the day, i dont have any pics, i was only 3 :lol:

im 21 so in 93' i was 10, so i didnt really pay attention to graffiti!

No castro was not writing castro in 95 or 96 he was JAZZ then.. he didnt write castro to at least 97-98, and his tag ill never forget which i cant find anywhere but my bedroom wall and personal flix.. he was bombing ndg but kinda outa the way area, downtown too especially when he meet radz (im talking about bombing sprees before his tag was readable) His 15 minutes wasnt until late 98-early 99 (the metro's etc..)

WTF castro first to hit metros? shut up.. every writer who was up on the street tags seen in the metro's, i remember in 1995 when ibm wasplanning on sneaking into vendome meto before castro had the idea, but thy never did it.. vendome metro, especially the train station was bombed the fuck up, by sike, erok, all of DTC crew the windows dodnt get buffed, i wish i fliked sikes fillins on the windows of the train station... anyway some active wroters up now that were bombing "back then" (96 97) are morons, scanner, sake, jone, specter (way back wrote juice everywhere).. CASTRO was RIS LLOOOOOOOOOOLLLL almost forgot about that (that was in 94 95)

The first graffiti I experienced was in the early 80's, in my neighbourhood, I grew up in A Ma Baie, on the eastern tip of Pierrefonds. It was just me and the kids I was breakin' with, the older guys did pieces like 'FRESH', 'Poppin' and other tacky hip-hop/break related stuff, I was just doing little marker tags around my hood, then I racked a can of fluo orange from Canadian Tire, woohoo. That was the end of that career, when breaking became all commercialized, I moved away from hip-hop for a bit.

Anyways, that brings us to '92. After seeing graffiti emerging in hip-hop videos (Naughty by Nature comes to mind)and such(Source mag), I finally decided to give it a go in early '93, after a little motivation from a friend. I was still living in A Ma Baie, so I wasn't too familiar with what was going on downtown and on the plateau but the names I definitely remember are Sike, Soak, Santi, Sike's cousin(can't remember his name), Mersh, Maink, Shorty, Jest and East. Of course there were Zilon with his faces and Zep with his cowboy stick figures, they were around before the other guys. The first people to hit Metros, stations, tunnels and commuters, were Sike and DTC. Sike was from the south of France and his older brother was a writer, so when he came to stay with an aunt in the Jeanne Mance projects, he was already on another level.

The oldest piece that I had seen in the early 90's was on the wall around the Grey Nun's place at Parc and Duluth, it was from '87, I can't remember what it said but it had a character of a guy with a 'fro and sunglasses, I eventually met the guy in the late 90's.

When I started, graffiti wasn't very big in MTL, the reason I got a lot of recognition is, apart from the fact that I was getting up a lot, is that my stuff was simple/readable. So the general public were more open to it, they could read it so it was less threatening. Also, I didn't tag too much, I was more about rocking simple, colored pieces, so the masses liked that too.

I think that's it. If I remember anything or if anyone has any questions, I'll try to add what I can.

it's so weird that a city's graffiti "scene" started not more than 10 years ago... i would have thought it was bigger earlier. i mean new york started like 35 years ago, and montreal only caught on in the 90s? weird. either way canada has some of the fucking sweetest graf shit going on that i've seen in the world.

Does anyone remember LOST? If anyone knows what im talking about, on the 20 West, before the big Kops overpass now killed by Icer, Stare and Hest, Oath, Scan etc....on the left there is a building which yusa, oath, serok, shams and otak hit the rooftop. On that rooftop there is a little hut which yusa and maps hit....well there used to be a big LOST piece on it, i remeber driving home and staring at it in traffic as a kid. That single piece, and Flows legible style made me want to get into graff. Know your history ppl....

Well, it was all pieced up previous to that photo, then they buffed it. That's why it's all just bombing, nobody wanted to put the effort into pieceing it if it was going to get buffed again.

im trying to remember lost on a roof near t.a.. was it on the old stcum bus shelter building (big and abondoned near t.a now torn down... i remember when i was little (before 8 used to see piles of busses in the garage where there is a home depot now...) its cool that everyone remember that lost rooftop, so do i i guess it was one of nices things along the highway, ask is making a comeback it seems slightly different look... lost had a few things (big grond up, thenm buig peice) on the buildiong thats still there next to t.a , its actually destroyed though now that little section.. i remember meeting him at night at the t.a painting but then i went back and it was a name ground up simple piece.. i gues he lied to me told me he wote lost.. lost had a couple things inside the redpath later oin aswell (hes not old old school but old school) Lost lbc

i almost forgot about that vandalism schmandalism piece... that was awesome.... same with the lost pieces and teh flows on autoroute 20, i've got some old pics from around 96,97,98 from redpath, jenkins, UP, ta wall and transmission A1, i'll dig them up and hunt down a scanner.... lol theres a still a straw & live piece on a bedroom wall at my moms house!!! :D

The last Casper flik is much hotter, in person. It might be my favourite of the few. It's hard to see the crisp outline, in the photo, and the colours are actually more poppin than in the flik.

This might be an ignorant question, but I don't really have any way of knowing, all the people that used to be throwing up RAW (respect all writers) next to there pieces, or throw ups, or whatever, in Montreal, why did they stop? yea TDK was dab's crew he started with Chek i think, and no Cesk is not Chek, Cesk has been writting a lot longer than Chek he didnt get out that much though.

yea Rev was writting a long time ago along with Akira you're right about that. shout out to Akira definetly montreal old school right there

yea that MH throw up is Mersh..the nintendo rock, Maink use to do those Gs with the face and the smile too

you're also right about the Sek tag being newer...but Sek has been writting since about 94 if im not mistaken wich i would file under old school in my book..plus he kept goin after most of the older heads kinda stopped

yea i have a flik of that spot behind foufs, but i took it when some guy went over that sant (sliver fillin, green outline i think) wow its like a dream seeing that flow again, i fliked that too, i think no parking had a tag next to you, and that guy tinnone wrote"behind ur back flow" kind of intresting instead of crossing som1 just to write messages.. That Sant is in the redpath, the section on thhe south west, i took a flik oin there when sant had a bigger frsher thing in the sdame spot, aswell as seazer etc..

Fior those that dont know, that flow in the air (i heard he did that in the daytime on a snow bank.. the snow bank was probably covering the spot, snow banks are always good, anyway that spot is on a building (thats torn down now) where the parking lot is in front of the bell (where they play hokey) center.. it was facing rene lavesque... Where the f was that sike done?? was that on the upper ta wall when train tracks used to be there?? THe sai, reminds me of that guy who got his leg crushed off by a rolling freight, i think i remember even seeing it on tv (hes very alive) i have lots of flix of his tag and couple throw's (mostly around redpath.. i forgot to flik a tag e had on st dominique oh well.. theres still old tags of these guys in the city, its kinda like an easter agg hunt to find them.. chek an alley parrelel to park street way north, just before park ex section (in the amish section) lol i see all the amish talking on cell phones there cracks me up.. old montreal has a lot u have to look for thwem though.. all over the city, just gaotta loaok

There's some fucker who has film footage of us painting that wall, he also filmed it on a camera that took a shot every 2 or 3 minutes, to make one of those sped up scenes, I've never seen the footage!

That was done over the SOC by Revolution and the THC by Mersh.
For those of you who don't know, that wall is on the side of the 4 Brothers store on St.Laurent, they built the Second Cup on that lot, those pieces are still there but there's a building built up on it now.

I was 13 when i first saw that sike (ice cream cone flix) it was in La presse . This was it, for me that photo made me start graff for real. At the time i did'nt even know that graffiti could be that clean. That morning i took a pen started drawing piece and characters in the same week i was painting my 1st piece with paint stolen from my dad............

i remember that flow have a flik of it in the day, it was south of notre dawm street near peel.. i just wrote sc half by mistake... to remove that mercury metal shit from your brain (which does all the suide effects i just mentioned) eat garlic and cilantro... And the only way or best way by far to fix your brain (re connect old damaged brain neurons) as well as grow NEW cells!! is by doing intrense (cardio) form of exercise, work up to your doing it aroun 5 days a week with 3 really intense ones.. youl notice (and everyone else around you) a huge difference if you were brauin damaged (the more brain damaged you were) in changes in yourself than if you arent really brain damaged.. I got hit in the head a lot (nothing seious) but enough to slow me down and effect my personality.. By running almost everyday im back and more so than before.. you feel so much better about everything.. so now i can focus on allmy goals as exercise along the way, very important, try it and youl see what i mean.. (mabe wont notice till a few weeks im not too saure..)..

WAY WAY back i would take teh 211 downtown....and i would climb up fire escapes to to flicks of Flow pieces....Dabs...Akira....and Seaz... i went up this one roof that t was on the corner or St catherines and some smaller street that was right in between st laurant and place des arts.. the fir escape was facing the street...so i started climbing it at about 11 am on tues... I got some nice pics of a Dabs and Flow that were facing each other on the roof..

But all i remember was some guy in a belle provence uniform taking a shit in the ally bellow...then walk out on to the street....i always wondered form that day why that guy didnt use the can at La belle just a block and a bit over..but hey


As for VC last i saw of any of them was Castro serving me a piece of pie at Rocaberry's

I think it's well enough the time for me to show up, I'm SPEK, first started as SPARK in 1994, I retired in 1998 after an got in court incident with Stack, Nabi, and another french I don't remember. Since I keep close to the hip-hop world, partly by taking pictures of the hip-hop group Traumaturge ( Atach Tatuq) of different break-dancers and following DJs.

second I think I have a penis in my eye as I took a Seaz & Mush picture in 1995 and at the time roller graf didn't exist, and there was nothing over it. Next CLose to the corner was an Zela alien caracter (very rare!!)

Here is the short Montreal graf history, from what I can remember.



Political graffiti were alway present in Montreal, at least since paint and spray cans became commonly available at any hardware store.

But around 1986, a man named himself "ZILON" started a new kind of art in the city something that use the the urban structures as a medium to show someone's art. Guys like Zilon and Roz-X painted their art illegaly on the wall of the Plateau and Downtown area. At the time police and people in general wasn't very much concerned about those activity, in fact nobody was aware of how big the game would become.

Early 1990's thing started to move on. The hip-hop wave of New-york with all the subculture that comes with; Master of Ceremony (MC) Disk-jokey (DJ) with the break-dancers and the graffers, slowly started to grow in Montreal. At the time, Mersh, now better nowned as Dj STACK, and MAINK were making big graffiti all along the the main street of downtown, like Parc av, St-Laurent and along the CP railway in Rosemont. The art of Mersh and Maink was something never seen before in montreal, a work of letters and of fame.

About at the same time in the western suburbs of Pierrefond and St-Pierre under the highway and along the CN rail way west of the Highway 15, more guys were starting to make graffiti production along the best concrete walls of the area. Guys like FLOW, SEAZER, KAS, primed for the first time the dry concrete walls of the west from 1993-1995.

Back in those days graffers were more concerned about finding a good spot on a roof or in an old abandoned sugar Refinery like the Redpath than covering every centimeter of the downtown area with tags. A visual art bachelor named TIMER was doing only big master piece, his tags could be counted on the fingers of one hand.

In 1994 a young man discovered the Redpath and started write SPARK, changing for SPEK not very long after as a four letter name is more versatile. That SPEK took many hundreds of pictures of the whole old school era; of what would be the golden age of the graffiti in Montreal.

The tagging mania started around 1996 when the guys of Rosemont and Plateau area; STACK, ZECK, MAINK, SWARM, SIMO, FIUSER and specially CAST, "bombed" the all the alleys and mailbox, and phone box and street light and walls and..and... with tags and bubly letters.BAT standing for Bomb All Town, and JKR standing for Just Kusing Rocus, would be indeed causing lot problem to the city; grafftity was now for the first time becoming a threat for the city.

In 1996 came the new idea of bigger is better. Before the huge SAIKO on the roof of the Canada Malting Plant, there was about no graf over there. The letters could be seen from miles away. A new category was born. Based on the work of COS and REV in New-York, people here started to make a new kind of graffiti, a style made with a paint roller and lots of guts to bend over a 10 story high building. CASE, SAKE, KOPS crew, painted all the last floor walls of the downtown buildings.

Now things and people are crazy, there is too much people doing graffiti and too much doing it the wrong way. They focus on too much on the tags and not enough on the pieces and the quality. Back in the time the walls of Jenkins were of very poor quality compared to the TA-Wall and Redpath. Jenkins walls are not better now, but they are the only abandoned possibility. Lately Jenkins was almost fully demolished. Just like Jenkins, Canada Malting co. plant was a quite place to graf, now places like this are becoming quite rare.

Today kids have very good pieces quality and make outstanding work thanks to the availability of the graffiti magazine in the specialised stores. They can completly copy the letters and the colors of somebody else and practice it on the wall. Sometimes it is almost like "copy-paste"

Haha, yes. I was the first person to sell 'graffiti supplies' in MTL. I used to sell NY fats & skinnies, German skinnies and Rusto fats. Carm used to always come by to get some, he usually came by with Tame.

What up spek!! I have a picture of "zela" doing that same character (he told me that he wrote menace (perhasp changed his ame).. I got nice quality photo of that kids face smiling at me in the camera while he was painting his character (it was in the redpath.. 4rth floor i think of the notrth building... And 5-0 came and busted some people that were wting and drinkning in the sourtard i as in the building (my mom was there too actually) and we went with menace or "zela" out the back entrance Fuck!! i sohuld pof took a flick of the -0 ubstignthe guys (one guy in army pants all i rmmber.. etc)..

I had known somebody who knew a reporter at CBC & did a report on 'CityBeat' and then I think the different reporters must've contacted each other because I did reports on all the channels.
I hate being on TV and after I did one in french, where I was speaking french, and they still subtitled it in french, I said 'That's it! No more french TV!!' but I did TQS show after anyways.

makes me remember when once the police came 4 cars and searched the whole main floor and courtyard. I was at second floor of the small west building painting with Mayser and Jet. we sat down back, didn't moved and waited a very long 15 min. The cops looked at the ground floor of our building but never went up.

I had lot of friend living in NDG and was there every weekend. The SPA was on a very well guarded roof, I think only Flow and seaz made their way up there appart of myself.

I saw one twin alien at first floor of the Redpath, on a roof in front of the Cegep du vieux Montreal and at the TA-Wall as part of the first coat of paint. I have pictures of all these places.
