I just got a couple of those empty molotow markers. My plan was to use some paint from some testpots my girlfriend got from school.

The paint was pretty thick so I&#39;m guessing it&#39;s kinda old, so I thinned it down heaps with thinners to about the thickness of the paint in my OTR paint marker.

It looks really opaque in the marker but it goes on like shit, not very opaque, it looks watered down and it&#39;s real streaky.

I&#39;m guessing it&#39;s enamel paint, it&#39;s made to paint the insides of house (I think) so should it work?

And can you thin it with ordinary thinners? Just that I saw &#39;enamel thinner&#39; for sale at the same shop but it was heaps more expensive.

Any tips? It&#39;s fucking me off cause I have sooooooo many of these testpots in some fucking awesome colours I want to be able to use them.

Any help will be reeeeeeeeeeeally appreciated, cheers.

Maybe dont thin them as much? Keep them a little thick. You should be able to use any paint. Youll just have to play with how thick.thin you make it.

enamel paint requres enamel thinner. i learned this back in the day when i was a little twat that stayed at home and built plastic model cars.

I&#39;m pretty damn sure that paint would be acrylic.. In which case you should be thinning it with water [or not using it in the first place]. The streaks are probably due to the thinners not mixing with that paint..

I&#39;m so fucked off that the other paint I have is acrylic, I have the fucking dopest colours in them. And I can only find plain, boring colours in enamel, maybe I&#39;m not looking hard enough.

Try the enamel thinner, or try water? Just use a colour you dont like to test out and stuff.

I&#39;m BRUTAL with paint right now, like it drips and shit and the lines are rarely the thickness I want, workin on it though. Just wonderin what you guys think of these 2 pics, only 2 I&#39;ve ever bothered to color and do on something other than paper.

Hey guys.

Look, i dont have any reservations about myself, i am probably one of the toyest toys you&#39;ve ever met. The bonus to that is i have a bit of maturity to myself.
For the last couple of months, ive been scetching whenever i have the spare time using the letter progressions here as a template for my own letter studies.

I recently bucked up the courage to post my first coloured pick on the toy section, to not so rave reviews :P

I dont want to be a burner overnight, i know its gonna take time and sweat. But can someone please tell me if im on the right track, and how do you actually know when something sucks (ie. i knew my piece wasnt great or anything, but i didnt think it terrible or i would have never posted it, i only coloured it in to show i made an effort before posting it).

entropy- where&#39;s the pic at? As for knowing wether it&#39;s bad or not, here&#39;s a good piece of advice to remember.--- As you practice, bits and pieces of style will come to you and make your shit look alot better. When you see a jump in progression you&#39;ll be like "damn, that&#39;s hot&#33;" which is cool, but keep it in perspective that it&#39;s really what you call "a personal best" and not neccesarilly big boy worthy yet. It&#39;s awsome to make progression, but always keep humble about it. Alot of kids hit a personal best and think they&#39;re ready to bomb the streets and make a fool outta themselves. They may be 10 times better then where they started, but they still wont get any love in the big leagues you know? You seem to have a good attitude, so I think you&#39;ll do alright. Just remember to keep a good attitude, and don&#39;t be impatient. Follow the montras "keep it simple" and you&#39;ll get there.

There seems to be a minor backlash in some of the old school principles of progression lately. I hear kids sayin it&#39;s played out to repeatedly do blocks and simple letters, and just go bomb shit and learn on the way. Yeah, it&#39;s good to paint as you progress, but not in public. It&#39;s a disservice to the art and culture to get over anxious and mess shit up. And the boring foundational work of simples ARE A MUST. Jump into a wildstyle and it&#39;ll be wack. plus mastering a simple letter teaches you so much of what you can logically bulid on without akward wackness.

I&#39;d say you&#39;re about at the same point as where everybody starts at. Simples are where you wanna go from here. Yes they&#39;re boring and I&#39;m sure you&#39;ll wanna bust some wild shit, just do that for fun on the side, but really focus on basic letters if you wanna progress. You haven&#39;t really got a feel for the natural flow of the letter yet. That&#39;s what you want to build off of. I&#39;ve said this b4 but think of letters as living organisms. Organisms that have a skeletal structure. They move in ways that are natural to their structure. If you bust a curve on a letter or add a lump in a spot that doesn&#39;t flow, the letter looks like it&#39;s got a broken limb, or a tumor. The flow of the letter is it&#39;s attitude. I think of letters as B-boys. They pop and lock and uprock, but they don&#39;t do the electric boogaloo. (That&#39;s a common mistake that begginers make where they give the letters all super sharp pointy corners... :P )

Basics just show you how the Caveman letter struts. Then you evolve it into the Rick Jaaaames&#33;.... Maybe not the Rick James, but you get my drift.

well, for a while you will, theoretically be falling on your face. but thats part of getting better. at a certain point, if you do simples, your simples will start to look decent, to where your more just... skinning your knee instead of falling on your face. and then itll build form there. but you absoluetly HAVE to commit to practicing simples only, or at least the most, for a good while. and you&#39;ll know when your ready to move on. you&#39;ll just think "hmm, i could bend it here" and such and it&#39;ll look good and just build and build on itself.

Okay last nagging post on this subject... i promise. :unsure:
When you say simples do you mean simple BLOCK LETTERS and dont even think about individuality or style yet ?
Or do i go for something like what meaner1 is doing on page 1882 of the tot black books section ?
and if the former, should colours, shadows and 3d come before trying to add style ?

dont worry about it.
and for now, yes block letters, like whats on your keyboard. and for awile, no, dont think about adding stuff. but it will get boring so feel free to play around a little on the side, just make sure block letters are your main focus. what meaner is doing is what you should be doing to. just try and clean it up. relaly make it EXACTLY like what you see on your keyboard, make your letters the same width, height etc. style should come before coloring and effects. and ass your letters get better, you will expierment with coloring and eventually get better at it along with better letters. but you defiently have the right attitude. just keep sketching and everything will come with time.

I must have done hundreds of simples and now I&#39;m just starting to tweak my letters out. Even now doing simples I still learn something new about the letters each time.

I think everyone seems to look at letters as something extremely simple because we all use them so often, but to me every letter, no matter how simple, is a peice of art in itself.

Mach: If I understand correctly you mean like a solid colour rather then sketchy? That comes down somewhat to what pens/pencils/solids you use but with any media a good idea is to allways colour in a circular motion to try and avoid streaking, and if using a non-opaque media (like coloured pencil) start light and work the colour up to be darker. The darker you go at the start of a section the more likely streaking will happen and the harder it will be to sustain the colour/pen pressure. With pencil you can also use two very similar colours layed over one another which also helps to hide streaking (slightly darker colour first then shade over the whole area with slightly lighter colour).

If I mis-understood and you mean staying in the lines, that comes down to pen control.

yo take it to the toy blackbook thread, they will crit it more there.

but just a couple thoughts:

try to make the letters more even. your g is tiny and your last s is huge and the other one is kinda small
the second one is better with proportion, but the g kinda looks like a c

but then again hey thats just my opinion

^^^listen to that shit...people really need to work on simples and dont get the importance of them...i&#39;v been writing for around a year now and im am just starting to advance my style from simples and block letters. kids start using block letters and then just cant come up with anything good so they try doing something more advanced which they are not ready for. remember kids...block letters dont just have to look like BLOCK. after you get comfortable with simples try starting to bend your letters a little then work on peices like that. graffiti is an art and any art will take a lot of time to master(as in YEARRRS). do not rush your work and remember the importance of simples. all you can do is improve if you keep working at your art.

Just that we can&#39;t get Krylon or Rusto here in New Zealand. Well we can but it&#39;s only a dollar cheaper than Molotow/Montana. Our mid-range paint, Dulux, is pretty good and roughly the same value as Krylon/Montana.

Anyways the reason I want them like that is so that I can test them out so I know what works with it. So far NY F/T&#39;s work, rusto&#39;s work, pinks work, oranges almost work (sprays wierd pentagonal type shape), beiges work OK.

So yeah, anyone know?

Jean grea&#39;s another that talks bout graffiti all the time in her songs...akir is another, immortal technique mentions graffiti but i doubt he does any. he&#39;s just a supporter of the four elements.

^^^glass^^^, keep it together. don&#39;t try to innovate right away. work on a handstyle, then some simple throws. for a handstyle, try this: write your tag in cursive and tweak it away from traditional cursive bit by bit. before you know it, you&#39;ve got a nice one liner that you can lay down in seconds. for bombs, don&#39;t do all that chunky shit. just look at your letters and try to make them flow together. maybe find similar shapes or parallel lines in each letter and accentuate them. everybody starts somewhere.

You can pick the freshest name in the world with the deepest significance to you....but if you can&#39;t write it with the supastyle....game over.... That&#39;s why you see cat&#39;s with retarded nonsensicle names... Cuzz they could write it with the def, def style ( and cuzz it wasn&#39;t taken...)

So why is it so often that you see cats sayin "I got my ill name now, but I can&#39;t write it", or this name is so fresh but I suck at those letters"?....

Everybody&#39;s so anxious to get up, but it doesn&#39;t do you ANY good to get up with a wack wack tag, only harm.... Work your alphabet over and over. Develope your style. Pick out the 4-6 letters you write the best and try them in different combinations until you find one that has......

THE SECOND MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF A TAG.....FLOW&#33;

Alright, so I&#39;m deffinitly in the toy catagory, but it kinda pisses me off. All I&#39;ve done up until this point (probably for the past 5 months) is draw draw draw. EDIT* as for Ow3k and Revolt...just keep working on your shit man. the only way to ever get good at anything is repitition. i kno i sound like a broken record and so does everyone else on this site...but really the only way to get better is practice. if i were you what i would do is work on your style and letter structure for at least a year before you go out and start spraying anything. if you go out at the level you are currently at all you are waiting to do is get bad mouthed and crossed out.

I kinda have to disagree a tiny, tiny bit.

Copying other peoples styles has helped me quite a bit (more so with handys though), people learn in different ways, some learn buy seeing, some buy doing etc. I&#39;m one of those people who learns by doing.

I still think starting from blocks and simples is the way to go, no doubt, but when you start to progress a bit it&#39;s good to look at some simple-ish pieces (or handys, throws, whatever) and see what they&#39;ve done with their letters and use that in your own stuff but give it your own personal twist. I think this has the downside of one making a style which is pretty much a modification/personilisation of someone elses style. But I still think seeing what other people do and trying it is a good idea.

The biggest tip I think I could give to new writers (not that I&#39;ve been writing for long but it has helped me a lot) is to look at everything in detail. Don&#39;t just look at a peice and think to yourself &#39;that&#39;s a nice piece&#39;, pull it apart. What makes it a nice peice? What has the writer done with the letters? How do the letters interact? Etc etc etc. Pull it apart to the last molecule of paint.

Dont get depressed guys, no need to. If your stuck in a rut, grab a dry erase board, and some chisel tip markers (ALOT OF THEM) and practice your tag for as long as you need. Therefore you wont waste paper. And youll get a good buzz going lol.

If you have troubles with a certain letter or you aint feeling your tag, change it up. I cant do K&#39;s very good. So I changed my tag recently. I wasnt liking my form on k&#39;s.

If your stuck ask a moderator. Ask a vet for help. They dont mind all that much.
(C3ZR may comment with a reply such as: Well here I hope it helps, OH....SNAP&#33;) And kinda make you feel stupid but its cool. C3ZR helps me even when its beef time.

say no to noodle letters kids...what you need to do as i and many others have said several times...start off with simple letters. do not try and go crazy with bends and twists and addons. they just distract the eye from the actual look of the letters. to tell you the truth i dont use any addons that touch my letters in my tags and shit.remember the blockier the better when your first starting out. start with your letters looks like ATESK(dont use my name please lol). as you improve you can start to bend the letters in places and eventually round out your letters and play around with addons. my 2 cents.

i had a REAL close call tonight.
my n my bud went out skatin n i brought alone a paint can to diss this toy whos been goin around dissin peoples shite.

so i handled some of them and then i went for one that was in an alley.
it was like this. the alley was right of the sidewalk n right past the alley was a bush. little did i know there was a cop car behind the bush. i couldnt see it. so i just walk right into the alley n pull my can out. then i see the cop n i toss the can n walk back out pullin my zipper like id been peein. and the cop pulls up slowly watchin us. and then drives away real slow. so i think hes gone and i go back in the alley. my friend gives me the all clear n i start painting again. at the end of the alley i see a light shinin on the wall, but i thought it was a street light. so i finished and turned n looked down at the end of the alley again n that lights gone. so i drop the can n i back up and look n its the cop, backin up from the wall.
im scared to death now. hed been sittin there watchin. i dont think he saw me tho. so i drop the can n tell my friend come on. we come out of the end of the alley the cop was on, trying my best to act like id just been pasin thru. the cop drives to the edge of the parkin lot(on the other end of the alley was a parkin lot.) n he just sits there n watches us cross the lot. n i do my best to not look suspicious, n finally he pulls off.

scared me to DEATH.

we circled the block n grabbed my can n we left.

i did manage to diss every single one of that guys tags i could find.

yes. i get that. but your saying you were gonna go over someone, saw a cop, acted like you were peeing, the cop drove away then you saw him a few minutes later. thats not a close call, a close call is when you have to run from cops or leave 5 seconds before they get there.
