If you're looking for bbook markers you can step down to tria, touch twin, OTR, or whatever. If there isn't a shop near by go online.
So i've been wondering, what's the whole controversy about the obey campaign.

There are 2 schools of thought in graffiti.
#1- If you can make a few bucks doing what you love and keep it true to the street ideal, more power to you.
#2- Money and commercialism destroys cultures. Graffiti should be kept on the streets alone, and once you profit on it, you're no longer a graffiti artist, because you're motives have changed to making money.
Shepard Fairey has turned his campaign into a huge cash cow, now owning a high scale fashion line based off his street work, a magazine, a gallery, etc...
Both views have very good points to be made. I think in the end, you just gotta do what feels right.
TO THE KID ASKING ABOUT MARKERS- You're in toy forums. Get the big pack of sharpies and you're good to go. You don't need to get the $ shit for a book you'll be laughing about in a year. Prismas are great markers, but I'd never pay store price. I bought 100 of 'em for like 30 bucks on ebay though, but that was a few years ago.

Something tells me you're trying to open the Zig/Posca paint pens. Do they have a HUGE nib or a small to medium Chisel? If They're paint pens, leave them as is. Posca Paint pens are quality and expensive. You're looking for a Zig "two way scrapbooking glue pen" with the mongo lid. If I remember right, they have a reverse screw top (twist the opposite way you normally would). Empty it out, clean it, and drop in your ink. Exact same pen as the OTR Hard 2 buff, flowpen, burner, etc...;)

Quick question about paint formulas; I just bought some awesome really bluish-purple paint pens. I'm thinking aout adding some silver to one, and see if decent results occur. In the ingredients list on the purple pens, Xylene is nowhere to be found. However, there is somthing on there called Xylol.
I figure the two serve the same purpose, but do any of you know some more details bout the differences between the two? I had never heard of Xylop before today.

Are freights more serious about vandalism then say the average town? Like depending on what you hit when you are street bombing, some people may take pictures and whatever and go out of their way to make sure you pay for it.
I would understand how you would get in trouble if you get caught in a yard, but if you are not destroying numbers/logos/engines etc are companies going to go out of their way to get you as individual? Or are they just going to buff and move on.
acereborn
01-20-2009, 11:29 PM
theyre not gonna go out for a single person unless theyre killing shit
plus, its harder to stop someone by "going out of their way"
they would just increase security in the yard
joker954
01-20-2009, 11:31 PM
well the street bombing part bout wat u said is true cause i got my shit in pics and in the database and shit from some bitches but i think in the yards it wouldnt be that heated unless u hit up like the the trackside wall or w/e
so like i think they jus buff and move on because freights come from everywhere

Friend of mine who lives in the burbs, they live by a small set of rail tracks and there are currently two trains parked there, within about a KM of each other, I can tell that they've been a week or two because they've accumulated snow.
Why are these trains there? If they leave, will there be more sitting at the same spot in the future?
It's this type of train ~ http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/8313/ghcrewtc9.jpg

Yes, this is what discerns an artist from a writer.
Writing is born out of destroying shit and generally opposing the system.
Once you start selling out and you are still a graff writer you are a sellout.
However, when you start selling and you are a regular run of the mill artist you are just making a living.

idk man.. i mean destroying stuff is the core but wats wrong with making profit? i grew up being told if your good at something then its worth getting paid for. graff writers wont get anywhere but jail if there isnt a goal behind it

If you rack go for the best you can get it...if you purchase your paint go for the cheaper stuff, if the 99 cent cans are not working out for you, buy some rusto. Although I personally have never used Montana, if you have a shop near you, just get some to test it out and see if you like it.
But if you think about it, is it really going to be worth it to spend alot of money on lower quality work with expensive paint? I would just use dollar paint personally until you feel you need better quality.

I'm almost 32. It just get's better the older you get, however you start to notice your age... I fucked up my back New Years day slipping from between 2 trains spread eagle across the lines. haha. Forreals. My back was tore up for 2 weeks. Just starting to feel better. I'm not a huge bomber tho.
As for the money debate, I dunno. The two biggest thoughts in my head about the subject pro and con are this.......
#1- Money and commercialism, distorts, waters down, mutates, and ultimately destroys cultures..
#2- %99.99999999999 of us can't tell a crew like MSK how to do shit. It's rediculous to think any great epiphany we have about writers ethics could overrule pure street work and pioneering. When you're a king, you rule over your country. When you're a GRAFFITI king, you do the same. The kingdom is yours, destroy it if that's your will. peasants can talk shit, but you're still king and that can only be taken away by force, not by elaborate theorizing. If you can put Obey Giant or Revok to shame, then you can tell him how to run his game. The problem is.......you can't.:(:p

You buy it a you local art shop or of the internet. You can either get etch cream which is less powerful but more safe and effective (cuz its a cream) or you can get etch acid, with which you need to be freagin careful. You make a harcore mop that will wistand acid, wear latex gloves, make sure you dont inhale the fumes and dont put any on you. And being scared is just part of the game

painters touch is bomb...too bad they got rid of it and replaced it with 360s
Anyone know of a way to make a marker similar to a k-66? Thin, drippy lines?
I've been using an ultra thin Painty but it only drips where your lines end no matter what you do..

Dude, your talking about Krylon, Rustos dont have 360s.
They sell steel ball pens (there as big as the k-66, maybe bigger) that you can fill with your own ink in art stores (Wallacks, Michaels), i dont know how good it works, but it should be decent.
Can I use epoxy appliance paint in combination with xylene based rusto paint?

I was wondering if there was anyway to get the Rustoleum Metallic Finish paint (the Chrome color) to not drip? Cause I tried to do throws with it, and I do em fast and far from the wall and still they drip soooo bad. I've tried them with skinny caps, still drips, with fat caps, they like explode on my hand, and the stock caps go on good, but drip mad hard. So any special caps or anything I can do? Cause chrome is such a sick color and I want to be able to use it.

Higher pressure cans are for bombing, you can fill throw ups much faster with them and so on.
Lower pressure cans are better for pieceing, you can work with details with them and shade, and do all kinds of things that you need to do in a piece.
Has anybody tried those Molotow sketching markers? How are they? Just courious, I quess that they are just like some regular paint markers, that's a bitty that there aren't any cheap-ass paintmarkers sold in here.
And I got some empty touch markers also (there is alcohol based ink used in them), is it useful do fill them with a little bit of alcohol (I think that they would last a bit longer) or is it pointless to try? I don't even know why I asked that question, im going to try it out.

Either
A) Still not dry, should be zero tackiness.
or
B) You got a bootleg canvas that is too soft and/or rough to use decos on.
Make sure to use your deco's in a black book or something first to check if they are working properly.

I've got a few questions for you guys.
First off...whats the best way to practice shadows? I just can't get shadows down for the LIFE OF ME. I have a nice style now that I like, but the shadows get me every time. It always ends up looking so crappy.
I usually do marker/stencil stuff...so I'm new to painting really. It sounds so dumb...but how far away should I hold the can from what I am painting on? I have a variety of different caps, but all my lines always come out either way to thick or VERY drippy. Whats the technique I'm missing here.
Thanks for any insight. Peace.

1) Just look up some picks on the internet and try and copy the shadow (and the letter it goes with) + practice makes perfect
2) 6 to 8 inches (thats the popular saying (banksy says 8)). + dont spray in one spot for too long, thats what causes the drip, i also depends if the surface is wet or not. I recommend trying to spray in daylight, just to get the hang of it (helped me alot)

ehhhh... can you slim that down for me? You want to use aerosol right?
Or like aerosol and markers? OR WHAAAAAAT. ANYTHING? OIL? Acrylic?
To be honest, I think it's all preference, what you enjoy painting with and what type of project you're going for(what look you're going for--- what the project calls for). Test some tools out on a little part of canvas ( i dont mean the canvas you're going to use---- use some canvas that's not stretched maybe), play around with it, that's my tip.

Could be a few things,
#1 Area code, some states are bigger then others or share the same one, so it makes it easier to understand where you live.
#2 Some crew names are literally just numbers, for whatever their reason.
#3 some crews/writers use street numbers.

ask some homiesss in the canvas thread for specifics... just pm them or something.
Just saying, for aerosol I'd use Belton, and for the paint markers... I know people usually use the skinny type like decos or sharpie paint markers. But I've never done canvas... well for graffiti at least, you should ask around some more.

I have a question, Seriously so everyone answer seriously, Not that I want to join these crews or anything(becuase to be completly honest I dont, even thought I admire their work a great amount and think they are some of the best graffiti artists out there) but how do writers get into crews like awr msk. Like how do they go about putting people in it(by in it I mean like saying go write msk awr near all your stuff). Becuase just out of curiousity, like some dudes I see who rep awr msk are really good, and others lets just say are more bombers and stuff if you know what I mean. Not like theres anything wrong with bombing its just that I've seen people who write and they paint peices and are pretty descent and want to be in that crew but dont get in. And those peoples talent with graff is mad high and better than some of the guys already in the crews so I was just wondering if someone could deeply explain that to me like whats going on. I'm just seriously interested in whats going on with this becuase i've seen stuff like this happen with writers I've seen who want to be in it but are'nt/
A lenthgy explanation by anyone who confidently knows what there talking about would be great becuase i've always been really interested in this question. Thanks alot.:)

I got a question...
Some shmuck decided to scribble all over a hardware store truck in my town. And when I say scribble, I mean it - just random streaks of spray - for shits and giggles. I may be a toy, but I know just randomly spraying a truck is just lame. Out of the blue, a fella I know who works at this hardware store thinks I did it.
I've never once purchased spray from there (too risky - small town, ya know), nor have I even told anyone connected to this guy about my interest in graf (only one person knows, my closest and best childhood friend, who writes as well). The only reason this guy thinks that I did it, is because he knows I'm an artist and a painter.
Now he's got some members of the town thinking I scribbled the truck, and I think he has even told the police to keep an eye on me. Every so often, patrol cars drive by my work-place real slow, and even by my house some nights.
I'm much more meticulous in keeping my graf interest quiet, and even more thorough in hiding my supplies and blackbooks. How this guy came to think it was me, was just pure chance... and the fact that I write anyway, just makes it worse. I work hard to hide it all, and to have my cover blown by pure coincidence really bothers me.
I'm gonna wait until all this cools down. But what else should I do?

Or...If you want to be sensible, go talk to the guy man to man, say you know he's suspicious but your an artists not a vandal...
But seriously go with option number one...:)

sounds like your better than me with keeping your graffiti quiet. Someone once told me if you didn't do the crime then don't trip, there's no way in hell he can say you did it if the fact of the matter is you didn't. So what if he's the stereotypical, making assumptions type of guy, I have a story similar to this one it happened in a hardware store. This one lady would always give me the evil eye whenever I would buy paint suspecting that I did some shit(true story). You know you can sue assholes like that for making false assumptions and accusations. What that guys doing to you is a crime in and of itself. DO what ever you want and don't worry about him. How in the hell would I go about meeting some of these people? Like one dude from this crew I almost met at a local art show. My buddy ended up meeting him and Im mad pissed. But theres so many guys in the crew I just wanna meet one or a few of them.
MAAAAYBE get a blackbook signed.

Start with a tag, then work your way up from there : tag, bomb, simples, piece.
I know that for me the transition was brutal (and it still is)
So just pick a spot where no one will go, and practice there, just wreck the place and practice with your paint. And dont waste your good cans for that, just rack/buy some shitty paint from a hardware store.

To be dead serious with you man, I wouldn't give a second thought going over that.
Try making each letter with just one or two strokes, and make each letter seperate.
Start simple, then start adding little bits of your own style.
Those little bits will eventually become the while tag, feel me?

Your not letting it get upside down in your pocket are you? cause i've had those giant "marks a lot" get upside down then they will drip when you open them.
other wise sounds like the nib isnt in there very well.......take the cap off and look at the end and if theres is any open space between the plastic and the ni then stuff some felt in there and super glue it in place.

Klic, i think your question is to open ended to answer correctly. if your asking if we know of another that writes it then u need to put in your own work. in my experance there is always someone somewhere that writes the same thing.
if your asking if we think its a good mix of letters u might write well, thats all a personal preference kinda thing.
Gort, ive seen these at wal-mart, home depot, lowes, and a multitude of art and craft type stores. if u cant find any there google it and buy online. may be cheaper.
SavortheWhatever, micheals, hobby lobby, basicly all spectalty art and craft stores should carry decos. if u dont see them u can ask for help, dont be scaired lots of people use them not just for graffiti sketching purposis. if they dont have them i believe they can order some for u if u request them. if u dont want to go through that hasstle then look online, thats a sure fire way to get them.
smokeinhot- could be as fatal said, but it could also be the type of ink. thin mix of anything is bound to drip. u are doing graffiti who gives a fuck if it drips on the floor? if drips are not what u want i might sugest getting a thicker ink. also, when u prime your marker dont put all your streinth into it. be gental and actually look at the end of the nib to reduce drips as much as possible. but hommie, they aint called "flow pens" for nothing. maybe use another medium like mean streaks or a more sharpie like marker.
banjax, u are a super parrinoid idiot. i mean that in the best way possible. where i stay at if i dont see cops roll by my pad something is wrong. this guy can assume all he wants. cops cant do shit about it and neather can he. if u get this parrinoid over what some idiot pasted all over a truck then i might suggest a new hobby. graffiti aint for u, at least the getting up part. maybe the guy thinks u did it because u LOOK FUCKIN GUILTY. the fact that your so bothered by this tells me that when u do go out foreal your the first fucker thats gunna get pinched. keep your head on.
Thanks guys. and uh klic....i think that names a little to common imo....

so also, decos have a bad rep of clogging. which is not the death of the marker just a road block.
no they were sealed but what would be better to use?
is this for blackbook work? canvas? glass? metal? gotta narrow down an answer here.
deco is a paint pen, so it is actually not a marker. if your doing blackbook stuff id get used to prismas or touch markers. i find decos are fuckin sweet on canvas but u gotta watch out for what color u use and its opequness.
if i were u i would get one of each, fuck with it for a bit and see what tickles your fancy man. the best person to know what u like is yourself.
haze- it depends on your printer. if u want to get ghetto about it and money is an option, resize the image your workin with to fit the dementions on your sticker. print it out on a plain sheet of paper. now get your sticker and dbl back tape it over where u want it to print on the sticker. re-feed the paper in your printer and print it again. make it nice and tight because it will clog very easy.
u can also get special paper thats just a big ass sticker and print meny on one and cut it sepreatly, do u have an ink jet or a laser printer? this matters.

klic- sane with a k on the end. but as i stated before, a name is something that should mean something to u. may that be personal or just a grouping of letters u like. asking what we think about something so personal is gunna get u a wide range of answers. do what ya want man :D

how can i get better at 3D on my lettering? and how can i get better with bars? yes even my bars suck!
with 3d try whats called a "vanishing point" and use a ruler at first. but google vanishing point and it should explain in better detail what the "new to graff" thread didnt.
do u think tiger woods picked up a golf club and just busted 350yards off the tee?
no, u have to practice hommie. theres somethings where only u can help yourself.

hahaha bullshit. u guys are at the one time in your graffiti carrier where u can bite the shit out of someone and get away with it.
but, there are some limitations.
its is only to advance your style. dont ever post something u bit and pass it off as your own. EVER.
if u do no matter what someone is gunna call u on it.
keep your bites to yourself and expand on them. make it your style with infulence.
theres a difference between a heavy influence and straight up biting.
the whole idea is to make u better while giving props to the writer that "inspired" u.

couple questions:
1) people always tell us toys to practice simples/bars. what should we keep in mind while practicing them to get the most out of them and when can we move on from them?
2) is it better to not look at graffiti and develop completely your own style or look at pieces and try to mimic them but in your own way?
3) what are those pieces that people do on the big UPS envelopes?
RhodeIsland
02-25-2009, 01:17 AM
1)Look at your keyboard and draw those letters with NO add-ons or extensions, you can move on when someone not toy tells you you can

2) This question was pretty much answered a page back
3) They are stickers

what i meant by the first question was what should we be thinking about working on specifically while drawing the simples? also for simples i know you said keyboard letters but i see a lot of people doing more varied simples... so basically should i just practice them like this guy's:
http://i44.tinypic.com/33aezhh.jpg
or is this type of simple good practice too (not mine, taken from another forum)

I have a question. When I do a throwie I use my fill color first for an outline, then fill that all in. But then when I go grab another color and start to do my outline, I get lost, like I can't see where my letters are going to start and end, so when I outline it the letters are horid. What should I do?
NouveauP
02-28-2009, 12:23 PM
Well this is the roller I want to try. Tell me what to fix as far as structure. And roller makes it sound like I'm trying to do it bigger than I am. I want each letter to be maybe 7 foot high with it spanning maybe 12-14 feet. I guess I could do that with cans, but I'd like to learn to do rollers.
http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo20/NouveauP/blockbust.jpg
As for the throwie question. I don't know what to tell you. Maybe practice doing dusty throws that way you can still see that line you made to outline your fill. Then after you get the motion of your throw you won't have to do it dusty anymore. Best advice I know to give.
^whats a dusty throw?

i wouldnt, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62TnuLaasoU
first roller? u can goahead and forget about "clean lines". depending on the surface it might take 2 or 3 coats per letter. so use your time wisely. id get some hommies together for all massive rollers, line out the letters and have your buddies help u fill it in.
rollers are nice cus u can cover a lot of space, and its thick paint so its faster depending on the spot.
do not, i repeat, DO NOT use cans only. if u want cracks or some addons then sure use cans but they are called rollers for a reason.

For example this nest throw.

A dust tag is when you use your finger or any another small object to brush away dust from a surface thus leaving your tag. On a lot of metal surfaces like dumpsters, boxes, doors, etc dust just seems to lay on thick and not come off. So your tag will actually be there longer then you think.

I have the same problem with my tag, so this might not be much help, but I think you're looking in the wrong direction for a solution. Quotes, underlines, arrows and */star things can only do so much for a tag. Your letters look more like someone's simple handstyle than a tag; they just need to be a bit more..."complicated" for lack of a better word. Hope that helps. looks decent as it is, just a little on the boring side in my opinion.
Maybe mess with letter endings, overlap letters, and try more curves than straight lines. Also, a chisel tip or just fatter marker always makes it look better/more interesting to me.
Hope that makes sense and/or helps.

Also any kind of white markers, for highlights, and greys for lowlights. Grab a few thick markers of a few different colors too, for quick fills. And then some stickers, "hello my name is" or just plain white ones, and a few poster markers for tags on the way home from the store haha and you're good.

and why not?? canadian tire (or wal-mart) is so easy to rack cans from.. there is no camera in the paint isle here.. and i can just walk out with buckets of paint..
what you do is stick like 4-5 cans in your belt line tighten your belt grab a 2$ color place can and pay for it.. then walk out.. (when doing this be sure to wear a big ZIP-UP hoodie or a coat..)
also what you can do is fill a small trash can with cans and get them to scan just the trash can...
