View Full Version : Picking your spots

what qualifies as a good spot? how do you weigh in safety, risk, piece or tag visibility. . .
while walking around town today i realized how many stupid tags and shitty throw ups were back in alleys or on street corners while some of the best graffiti ive seen is far away from any sort of publics eye. only other writers and hobos will ever see any decent graffiti in my town, the problem is very few people are willing to take a risk to do something nice closer to down town. so the question im asking is when is a spot worth hitting up?
ive yet to find this in any other thread, so if its been done just throw up a link to a relevant thread

yeah in my town theres almost no decent stuff except for the stuff where no one would ever see it..
i think i would rather hit one good spot than a ton of crappy ones... for example the electrical box in the center of the town or the electrical box next to the 4 highway ramps than the countless stop signs in the suburban area and neighborhoods of where i live.,.

i think sometimes its good to have some good graff away from the general public. There a cool chill spot around here with amazing graffiti and not too many people know about it, so its cool.

i mostly tag now
but when i first started
me and a friend found a huge cement electric box thing right off a road
like 10 feet by 10 feet blank wall
in perfectly plain view of a major high way in our area
and we did throws on it
some dude came and drew like a flourescent religious cross off to the side of it
so i went back one day
and covered it all again
did a peice on it
and the city stripped the paint off it just where my peice was
it sucked
but yeah i always go for tags or sticker in places i know are busy streets
always hit the back of a few signs, electric boxes and dumpsters on the road
but yeah some of the best is a way from the public because
good stuff takes really fucking long
and you wont be interrupted
hopefully....

well at first when i got into graffiti i was into just strait up bombing. i waould want to get my name out everywhere so i would put a throwie or a quick piece on almost every spot i could find. i would ushually have a friend with me and he would be the lookout. the spots were kinda risky and some where far off. now im into murals and doing quality stuff that takes time and effort so i ushually find wall thats under a highway or off somewhere so that i can take my time and finish the piece without the paranoia factor or the rush to get in and out wihtout being noticd. trust me try doing one under a bridge where there is old or running train tracks and theyll be a wall there. and you can take your time and put effort int the piece and itll surpize you how good it feels to put your talent as an artist to the test and expess your self through your art and style and not just your 2 color throwie or your tag.
ushually if bombing the riskier the better(sortof)
but when you want to do real pieces and wildstyle find a place where you wont be to bothered bby cops or people

Yeah with the bridge thing, most of the well known artists here paint them. But the fucking super toy 12 year olds WRECKED the bridges and I know for a fact that cops check there often, people are more aware of it.
Fucking toys.

Go big or dont go at all..

everyone got it pretty much right man. just wait til night, wear black. if your scared start out at spots people see but dont go frequently(like in tunnels, alleys). your eventually gonna want to hit up places more viewable by the publics eye. if your a beginner or just kinda scared about it do mostly tags where your afraid to get caught

Take into account the amount of traffic that will see it and weigh it with the chances of getting caught. I've put up tags on the side of highways during the morning rush, no one really cares that early. Those tags have been up for more than two months! :)

to the starter of the topic, i won't be a smartass...
but the reason why you don't see decent shit in spots that everyone sees is because decent shit takes time... not something you can do within a matter of seconds like a throwup or tag. decent to me is a fill in bomb thats not the same ol' throwie i see under a bridge done by some toy fuck, and not straight letters either. i don't think i've ever seen a fill in bomb with color schemes and 3d in a high traffic area anywhere around my town. only over fenced areas and places where people can't grab you and fuck you up
a good spot to me is one that is dark as shit at night but in the day the whole world could see it. a good artist could find those spots.

07-19-2008, 09:57 PM
it all depends on the piece....
if its a long ass burner, then a nice chill spot like a trail overpass or under a bridge is best, but not many people will see it....
also, remember, if its a good enough spot, and its hard to get up there, its going to be just as hard for a cop or a pissed off manager to get at you. so be quick, and be quiet, and any spot should be fair game

MMMM, if people are affraid to make bad ass murals or gigantic graffiti in public places, why dont they get togheter: 5 people study the same piece, you go out one night at 2, 3 oclok in da morning and you bomb it right in front of the town center. Its fast if everybody know what there doing and if you know the escape route. If you dont know any writers in your area, just grab 2 friends to do the fill ins.
Advice from a canadian-toy (be-atch)
Depends on what I do,
Slaps: I always choose a high spot (stop signs, no crossing signs etc,.) I don't know why but it always seems like a fun spot to hit with slaps. Either that or I put slaps on phonebooths.
Stencils: I always choose flat walls and try to focus more on clean walls. I sometimes hit high spots with stencils but that's only when I have a friend help me up.
Tags: Metal, I love tagging on metal. I almost never tag on concrete. I usually hit slides, swings, phone booths, electricity boxes. And I try to hit places that don't have much tagging.
Throwies: With my throwies I always always hit risk spots, like bridges and shit. It gives me a nice adrenaline rush for some reason haha.
and last but not least
Pieces: Like I said in my other post I usually look for walls that are really really tagged and ask the owner if they let me do a piece. That's how I find my piece places.
with the cover of night, you can hit almost anything.
bombing is the tough part though.
tbh hit most spots use ure fuking instincts
9 tmes outta ten ull get seen but they wont give a fuck theyll keep walking theyre not gonna check out so dark figure with a hoody on because theres a chance THAT GUY MIGHT FUCK U UP even if ure some 15 yr oldwho wouldnt start shit, grow some balls very rarely are peopl going to stop and if they do tellem to fuck of and once again 9 times outta 10 they will..
Vagrant
08-11-2008, 04:06 AM
Its true that the best graffiti is usually in way out of the way places that don't get seen... but theres a reason for that.
Do you know how long it takes to do a huge piece that just completely burns the wall? I know guys in my area that spend entire days working on a single piece.
All of these are in WAY out of the way places, the backwoods underpasses and shit.
You are just NOT going to see a sick piece in town. You may see a halfway decent piece but it wont ever be as crazy as the backwoods burners.
Downtowns only going to see throws and basic pieces 2-3 colors tops

odds are if its really hard to get up there theres only gonna be one or two ways up or down so it might be easier for the cops or whoever. but its still a good point cuz sometimes they might not even see a way up or down.

good point, but if it was a good spot it would be there for a while. i think a good spot on the highway is next a bush sort of at an angle where oncoming traffic can't see it right away, but it still stands out like fuck when you're driving by. or if other writers are looking for graffiti will be looking for it. those usually stay unbuffed the longest.

I just scope stuff out during the day when I'm driving around doing my usual schedule. Whatever looks good for you is what you should hit. Everyone is different and everyone has a different idea of what's good. For someone who likes to do really detailed pieces that look amazing; the wall in the main square of town is not going to be an ideal spot. For someone who likes to throw up a quick tag or wheatpaste then they can put shit up anywhere they want because that stuff is quick.
