Interview from Clout Magazine Issue Four
Travis Jensen AKA TheSFMasher interviews Rifleman AKA Ellay Khule

I’ve known Ellay Khule- “The Rifleman� for a little over two years now and overtime we have grown to become pretty good friends. Since he lives in LA and I live in SF, we probably only see each other four or five times a year when he comes up here for a show; however, we still manage to communicate on a regular basis by phone and through e-mail.

Not too long ago, Khule was here in SF for a solo show he had at this little spot in Pacifica. I remember he didn’t leave LA until after midnight the night before the show and arrived at my house at 6:00 AM the morning of the show. Instead of going back to bed and letting Khule get some much needed rest, I put on a pot of coffee and he played me an unmastered copy of his soon to be released album, Ellay Khule vs. Rifleman, “The Jeckyl and Hyde Theory.� WOW! I listened to the album through and must say that I was thoroughly impressed with the whole thing. Keep in mind this wasn’t even the finished product! Seriously though, all you Ellay Khule/Rifleman fans out there are in for a sweet treat. Ellay Khule and Rifleman, battling each other is brilliant-definitely some next level type shit.

Khule and I spent the rest of the morning chatting, listening to music and watching the Giants game on TV. Later that afternoon we started drinking. Khule was smart and stopped after only having two beers, but I on the other hand kept drinking-n-drinking-n-drinking and pretty soon day had turned to night, I was seeing double, and it was almost show time. Luckily I wasn’t the one performing.

We didn’t arrive at the venue in Pacifica until maybe an hour or so before Khule was scheduled to go on. I had been to this place once before for a show he had there maybe six months back and let me tell you, this place is a trip! It’s definitely not the kind of spot you would expect to see a hip-hop event hosted at, that’s for sure. It’s like something out of the Twilight Zone. Seriously, this place is filled with bar flies, hashers, old hippies, and shit-kickin’ good ol’ boys sporting mullets and rocking Paul Bunyan flannels with the sleeves cut off. I felt more like I was at some dive bar in Idaho waiting to see Willie Nelson perform or something. The funny thing is though when Khule got on stage, he fucking killed it! You should have seen it! The good ol’ boys were clapping and nodding their heads in approval; the hippies had their lighters lit in the air; the hashers started a mosh pit in front of the stage; and the bar flies whispered and giggled amongst each other, anxiously waiting for autographs and a chance to speak with the man once the show was over. It was really quite a sight and most definitely one of the best live performances that I’ve seen to date.

A week before conducting this interview, I got a call from Khule. Judging by the tone in his voice, I could tell something was the matter. He didn’t seem like his usual self. He tolf me his 15 year old nephew, Daronik, fellow member of The HipHopKlan was involved in a high-speed chase with the LAPD that ended when their car shot off the side of the freeway and into a tree. Fortunately, Daronik was lucky enough to survive the accident; however, his best friend, the passenger, did not. Now the law is trying to charge Daronik for his best friend’s death. This changed the direction I had originally planned for this interview. I would just like to take a moment to say my deepest and most sincere condolences go out to the families of both parties involved and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Despite the unfortunate events that have recently transpired, Khule was kind enough to take a moment to answer some questions. Here’s what he had to say.

Masher: What’s up Rifleman? How’s everything?
Khule: What’s up, man…well, to tell you the truth, everything is kinda ill right now on my end. My nephew Daronik from HipHopKlan was recently in a bad car accident that left him in a coma for two days. As a result, he had to have two serious surgeries performed on him and when he finished his last surgery, the police took him to jail because he was the one driving the car. Unfortunately, my nephew’s best friend [the passenger] died in the accident, so they’re trying to pin his death on him. So as you can see, I’ve been dealing with a lot of stress over the last couple of weeks.

Man, I’m sorry to hear that. Is there anything that the people reading this can do to help?
Well, they can pray for my nephew, the deceased, and the families involved. And if they want to help me even more, then can send donations of any size to FBO Daronnie Thompkins 3007008345, California National Bank, P.O. Box 866012, Los Angeles, CA 90086-6012 (payable to Daronnie Thompkins). A percentage of any donations will also go to the deceased family as well.

Also, another thing they can do is write a letter of recommendation on my nephew’s behalf that will be used as a character reference and leniency for his “punishment.� The letters can be sent to B. Thompkins, P.O. Box 71455, Los Angeles, CA, 90071.

What else have you eben up to lately?
Truthfully, I haven’t had time to do that much other stuff lately, because we’re all working really hard around the clock to fight the injustices in the system regarding my nephew’s case. We’ve learned a lot about the misconduct and cruelty of incarcerated minors…it’s unbelievable! What I’m saying is, even when it’s all over with my nephew, we will continue to fight the system for others. But other than that, when I’ve had time, I’ve just been recording a couple of new projects I got coming out in the near future.

What’s up with your new album? What’s the name of it and when is it scheduled to hit the shelves?
My new album should be out by Halloween. It’s called, Ellay Khule vs. Rifleman- “The Jeckyl and Hyde Theory.�

Where can the people out there readingi this get a copy of it at?
Online they can get it at accesship-hop.com, belowthesurface.com, curbserver.com, and a couple other places, too. As for the stores, they can get it at Amoeba (LA, SF, Berkeley) and pretty much all the mom and pop joints out there as well…and if they don’t have it or any of my other stuff, then tell them to hit me up and get some. So if you’re reading this and you work at a record store and don’t have any of my music, hit me up! (Laughs)

So how many solo albums do you have underneath your belt now and how many different compilations have you appeared on?
I have five solo albums out including the new one that I’m about to release. There’s Rifleman Kclassixx Vol. 1,2, and 2. Then there’s Riflemania, and my new one which I mentioned earlier Ellay Khule vs. Rifleman- The Jeckyl and Hyde Theory. I also have two albums out with the HipHopKlan, which are Klandestine Vol. 1 and Thomakazee. And lastly, there’s the Faces of Def 7� that came out not too long ago.

As for projects and compilations that I’ve been on…let’s see, there’s the Project Blowed comp., Beneath the Surface comp., Fat Jack’s Cator 2 the DJ album, and that weak ass Foolblowin comp. (Laughs) I’ve also been on most of the C.V.E. (Chillin’ Villain Empire) albums as well: Welcome to the Afterlife, The Declaration on an independent double CD, and Kaos Coup D’etat to name a few. I was also on Aceyalone’s Mic Check 12� track, Feet Up on the Table and Abstract Rude’s Heavyweight’s Round 4track off his album, Paint. I think that’s it. (Laughs)

Not including your new album, what’s your favorite album that you’ve released and why?
Not including the new one, I’d say my favorite one has got to be Thomakazee, hands down. That shit is just jam-packed with bomb ass songs.

How long have you been rapping for?
I’ve been rapping for like 17 years…maybe since like ’85 or ’86? I didn’t start taking it seriously though until maybe ’89 or ’90 though.

How did you get into music?
My family is all very musically inclined. My mom sings, one of my uncles plays guitar; my other uncle plays bass…and so on and so fourth. I just happened to grow up in the hip-hop era, so that’s how I started rapping.

What were you doing before you started rapping? I heard you were gang-banging, is that true?
Yeah, I banged a bit…but I also did a lot of other nonsense on the streets though, too.
Man, to tell you the truth, I consider myself flat out lucky to be here today. Honestly, hip-hop saved my life! And that ain’t no cliché either! With the blessings of God, I rose up out of the bullshit just in time to save myself.

What was it like growing up in South Central LA?
Growing up in the hood is like growing up anywhere in America as a black man. It can be the best thing ever, but on the flip side, it can also be the ultimate worst thing ever though, too. Luckily I learned what I did at a young age, because some people I know learned too late. The hood was crazy back in the 80s, and then it chilled out for a while, but now it’s starting to get crazy again. I’m debating on whether or not I want my kids to grow up here. Part of me wants to stay so they can learn like I did, but the other part of me wants to move them out, so they won’t have to learn the hard way like my nephew did. All and all though, I love South Central LA.

Who were some of your earlier musical influences?
Since I went to all kinds of schools and had many different experiences with other cultures at such an early age, I was influenced by artists and groups like, Earth Wind and Fire, Zapp, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Duran Duran, Quiet Riot, Black Sabbath, Kraftwerk, Malcolm McClaren, Grand Master Flash, Yellowman, Billy Idol, and Depeche Mode among many othes.

Who are some of your current musical influences?
I don’t really have any new musical influences, really. All mine are all old school. Nobody new really excites me and makes me want to write.

When did you first start recording your own music?
I’ve been recording pretty much since I started rapping…’85 ish, I’d say. Me and my homies would just bag rap and tape it so we could listen to it later. My first real recordings were in ’87 or ’88. Since my mom was into music and had a little bit of equipment, she’d let us mess around on it and that’s when we really started to make some real songs to bump.

Where did you get the name Rifleman?
Ellay Khule has been my name since like ’87 and the name Rifleman came along around ’93. Since I’ve been in the streets, I know that life pretty well and sometimes I have the urge to talk about it, but when I do that, sometimes the hip-hop heads don’t like it or accept it. And then when I do all my underground, super fast, deep concept, battle style of rapping, then sometimes the homies in the hood don’t like it or accept that either, you know? So anyway, I got tired of hearing shit from both sides and divided my personality up into two separate entities. Rifleman is for the streets and Ellay Khule is for the die-hard hip-hop heads. That pretty much sums it up in a nutshell.

What’s up with the other Rifleman? Do you know him? Does he know you? Who is this guy? Any plans for a battle where the winner has the rights to the name or something?
The other Rifleman is a fraud! Do I know him? Shit, you’re crazy, man! I would have already put hands on him if I did. And yeah, we can battle, but I know it would be one sided. He’s weak, so I’m not even tripping off him. Everyone knows who the real Rifleman is.

So what’s in the works for you in the upcoming year and beyond?
My plans are to make as many moves in hip-hop as I can. I got a few free CDs coming out soon, so be on the lookout for them. Other than that, I’m just trying to reconnect with the fans and gain more as I go, so I’m going to do like two or three free CDs in between doing my other shit.

Do you have any advice for the youngsters out there trying to break into the rap game?
Hmm…Breaking into the rap game…well, it’s all about being in the right place at the right time and doing and saying the right thing. People always leave that part out. You have to be able to seize the opportunities wherever they may present themselves. Never take no for an answer and ALWAYS hone your craft.

Two of the underground&#39;s favorite sons, Danger Mouse and MF Doom, have come together to release a collaborative effort titled DANGERDOOM: The Mouse and the Mask.

The album was inspired by the Cartoon Network&#39;s series of late-night animated shows known as Adult Swim. And according to Epitaph Records president Andy Kaulkin - who is releasing the project - the mix of different ingredients has turned into a delectable offering.

"Danger Mouse and Doom are both brilliant at taking chunks of pop culture and reshaping them into art. The context of Adult Swim makes this already promising collaboration truly inspired," Kaulkin said.

DANGERDOOM will feature skits and voices from Adult Swim&#39;s popular shows, as well as special appearances by Ghostface, Cee-Lo and Talib Kweli.

The album is slated to drop on October 11th on Epitaph Records.

Danger Mouse is best known for his conceptual album The Grey Album, in which he combined Jay-Z&#39;s Black Album and the Beatles&#39; White Album. He also has a collaborative album with Cee-Lo in the works called Gnarls Barkley.

MF Doom came up in the group KMD. After a five-year hiatus, he re-emerged as the metal-masked MF Doom, taken from the comic super-villain Dr. Doom.

He has released numerous critically acclaimed albums, including Operation: Doomsday and Mmm...Food. Currently, MF Doom reportedly has a project with Ghostface in the works.

But soon his fan base grew, forcing the greater rap community to take notice. His recently released Just Tryin� Ta Live became one of the most anticipated releases in recent days. And with the release of the album, Devin delivers, producing a gem that will undoubtedly remain in popular rotation for the foreseeable future.

Sixteen tracks deep, Just Tryin� Ta Live starts off on an odd note with a strange opening track entitled �Zeldar,� in which Devin rhymes as if he is a space-alien over a Dr.-Dre-meets-Star-Trek beat that is almost hypnotic. Breaking the strange mold of �Zeldar,� Devin then returns to the familiar confines of Dr. Dre�s beats on the track �It�s a Shame,� which features Pooh Bear. While �Shame� is a good track, Dre�s beat is a bit too heavy for Devin and it seems that he has a hard time riding it. Luckily, Devin then returns to his usual laid-back sound on the aptly titled �R&B.� Set as a debate between a redneck and Devin, with Devin playing both parts, �R&B� has little to do with rhythm and blues, but instead with the chorus, which has Devin singing �reefer and beer� in a soft voice.

But the greatness of Devin�s latest effort is not in his continual use of sexual and alcoholic subject matter, but in the chances he takes by moving toward different, more innovative topics. The best example of this originality comes on the track �Who�s hat Man, Moma.� In this song Devin tackles the issue of an artist�s responsibility for his content by cooing a chorus of, �Who is the man, moma? / On stage with a brew in his hand, moma / Don�t you think he�s being rude to the fans, moma / Grabbing his n�, look at him do it again, moma / He�s doing it again, moma.� While it is obviously taking a lighthearted approach to the issue, Devin�s commentary is a welcome addition to his usual lyrics.

One surprise feature of the album is the featured guests on the tracks �Some of �Em� and �Just a Man.� The latter, featuring Raphael Saadiq, is a platform Devin uses to address a girlfriend. Incorporating the singing of Saadiq, Devin both rhymes and sings on the track, trying to justify his less-than-faithful ways. The other strong collaboration on the album, �Some of �Em,� features the unlikely combination of Xzibit and Nas. Nas�s work on the track is the more noticeable, as he starts his verse at a frenetic pace. �Life is so unpredictable, full of surprises / I could just die from natural causes, bullets or virus ... / That remind me, I could easily end up like Shyne did,� Nas raps over an ominous beat. While a strange combination, Devin, Xzibit and Nas come together for one of the best cuts on the album.

A well-paced record, Just Tryin� Ta Live leaves its mark as one of the best albums of the year with multiple songs that stand out.
