So this unreleased Thorns track, it sat in the vaults unused for many years. You might actually recognize the Blockhead production, because Aesop Rock used it on Labor Days cut Bent Life. The full story behind Thorns is as follows:
“This was one of the songs we had recorded on what I believe was Slug and Eyedea’s(Rip) first trip to NYC. If memory serves, we ended up not keeping it because it didn’t really have any direction or structure – it was more just us 4 bugging out and getting to know each other. The same trip yielded “Missed by a Mile” with the same line-up, as well as another one or two that never saw the light of day. As my deadline for Labor Days was approaching I knew I wanted to use the beat for my record, so this version was dismantled.”

"I am working to put out a Black Star project for people to buy sometime next year," Talib said. "Me and Mos [Def] are focused on independence and quality of sound. We're really into a Madlib/Dilla thing right now. Anything you hear from us is probably going to be that type of sound. And it's about independence, so we are trying to find out the right mediums to get the songs out. When you heard 'Fix Up' on Colbert, it wasn't even mixed; it was something we recorded a week before. Now we're at the mixing stage of the song and we are going to put that out ourselves. We have a bunch of songs recorded. We are just trying to figure out the best way to release them, whether it's going to be one by one, EP or album. Right now, the plan is to release 'Fix Up' and then Yasiin is working on a Yasiin Bey Presents project and then we'll see how it goes."

Dwight Arrington Myers (May 24, 1967 -- November 8, 2011), better known as Heavy D, was, is a Jamaican American actor, rapper, singer and former leader of Heavy D & the Boyz, a hip hop group which included G-Whiz (Glen Parrish), "Trouble" T. Roy (Troy Dixon), and Eddie F (born Edward Ferrell). The group maintained a sizable audience in the United States through most of the 1990s. He has recently ventured into reggae music and can now be described as a reggae fusion artist.
Heavy D's last public appearance and performance was in the movie Tower Heist, which premiered only 4 days before his death.
Its a tragedy how we have to loose such a great person, especially when he came back to the spot light after 15years of behind the scenes to do a Live performance at the October 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards and started to get back into the business of music, creating fire with the 1st cousin, Pete Rock. Erick Sermon Speaks On Recent Heart Attack With Sway On Shade 45 [Audio]
Legendary producer/rapper Erick Sermon suffered a heart attack last week. Luckily, he got to the hospital in time to be treated before his condition worsened. Sermon called into Sway's Shade 45 show earlier today to describe what happened leading up to the heart attack, the importance of eating the right foods and watching your weight.
"I was downstairs on Wednesday night (November 9) making this record. I was kind of excited because I hadn't made any beats in a while. So, I was kind of happy about that," Sermon said. "I went upstairs and sat on the sofa and I got two sharp pains in my left hand side. And I said, 'maybe I'm sitting wrong.' and I positioned myself differently on the sofa. Then i sat there watching tv and started getting heart palpitations like if you're working out, but I wasn't doing nothing. I stayed there until about 3 or 4 in the morning until I fell asleep. Then around 12 o'clock that afternoon I got the same pain in my left hand side. So, I said 'you know what? let me go to the emergency room.' I was planning to just come back home. When I got there, as soon as I hit the door, my whole left side cramped up on me and the heart palpitations started going really fast again and I started to get the pains again."

The So-Called ‘Mixtape’

-- I recently acquired about 100 mixtapes from a guy who used to DJ back in the mid-‘90s. I’m talking REAL mixtapes. Dubbed cassettes with real Hip-Hop on them, mixed together with scratching, instrumental breaks, and local MCs on the guest-spots. Tracks included B-Sides, remixes, underground joints – all the stuff that you couldn’t find anywhere else, but from a bootlegger. Listening to these tapes has got me thinking about mixtapes nowadays. Just about every rapper in Hip-Hop is making them. But are these really ‘mixtapes’? What’s being mixed? 90% of the mixtapes that come out nowadays are essentially free albums.

All the time, I’ll hear rappers coming out with a mixtape that has original beats and rhymes, and plays just like an album. So what’s the point of calling it a mixtape? Fans would be more appreciative if you came out with a ‘free album’. Yeah, it’s just words, but ‘album’ sounds way more official than ‘mixtape’. Giving your fans a ‘free album’ makes the product seem more authentic, and it looks good on you to give your fans something which usually costs money. People are used to free mixtapes. That’s why they’re called ‘mixtapes’, and not ‘free mixtapes’. Putting out a free album distinguishes the artist from the rest, makes them look generous in the eyes of fans, and makes it so that the name of the product properly describes what the product is.

I’ve got nothing against mixtapes in 2011, as long as they’re proper mixtapes. For example, earlier this year One Be Lo dropped a couple mixtapes (entitled Laborhood Pt 1 & 2), which were both compilations of older material from him, verses of his from when he guest-featured on other artists’ albums, etc. All of this mixed together nicely so that it moved quickly from one track to the next. That’s something I can proudly call a mixtape. It’s easy to see the differences between those two mixtapes, and the ‘L.A.B.O.R.’ album that he dropped later on in the year. I’ve gotta respect that.

There’s nothing wrong with the music on so-called ‘mixtapes’. I just feel that true mixtapes and free albums should be kept separate. To me, it’s an improper use of terminology to have them both mean the same thing in Hip-Hop today. If you’re making an album and giving it away for free, call it a free album. If you’re throwing together bits of songs and mixing/cutting it up like they did in the ‘90s, call it a mixtape. Simple as that.

It aint proper. But that shit dont really matter to the consumer. The people who are puttin out their shit sayin its a mixtape when its actually an album is just making a mistake, even though some do it on purpose. I guess thats just what the generation now wants to here, as if the meaning of album and mixtape mean the same thing. If I see a "mixtape" by dope artists with a dope dj, and it turns out to just be an album, its dissapoining

-- Feuds between rappers have always gained much attention from Hip-Hop heads all over the spectrum. Legendary feuds like the ‘East Coast vs West Coast’ 2Pac vs Biggie feud are common knowledge to fans. Same with the Nas vs Jay-Z feud. Nowadays, I feel like fans expect beef all too often. It’s sometimes fun to watch a couple MCs go at it over beats, but I don’t see why some heads fiend for beef like a crack head. I mean, do we really need to see artists yell about how whack somebody else is? Aren’t there more artistic things that they could be doing?

To use an example, when Common dropped “Sweet,” a huge number of fans got mad at the fact that Comm didn’t say the name of the person that he was referring to in that track. I personally don’t see why it matters. It’d be the same song regardless of who he’s talking about, and yet so many heads expect there to be some real beef. In the past, we’ve had rappers DIE over beef. That’s not cool. Is it really necessary to risk you life over some words spit over break beats? I think fans need to stop pushing artists towards feuds and start accepting an artist’s decision if they choose not to start beef. If Common doesn’t want to say the name of the person that he thinks is sweet, then so be it.
