ive noticed that in documenting the history of graffiti, women have been left in the dust. early inovators such as; eva 62, barbra 62, poo-ni 167, z73, charmin 65 and stoney (UGA - Untied Grafitti Artist/ Ex-Vandals), cowboy, michelle 62, kivu, grape, sueki, kathy 161, etc..all have recieve credit but none of their work ever appear on the pages of books, movies, or internet sites. for example many of these women are highly credited for representing with some of the most famous writers today (phase 2, the crazy 5) but when looking for evidence of their art a gaint void begins. so should one assume that lady pink and tribe are so comericalized because of their femine attributes and not their actual artist talent?

I just started learning how to write. pogopope taught me the ropes and I guess I'm on my own now. Though the only time I really get out to write is with him unless I am painting my basement or stairwell. I was really ignorant about graffiti before I met him and I am really getting into it now. I can't wait to get better, I need way more practice though.

I don't see a real reason for their being less female writers. It doesn't really make sense. Guys and girls are artisticly the same in most cases, gender doesn't seem to play a roll in art at all. I simply just didn't know about it, I had admiration for it, I thought it looked neat, but other than that couldn't care less. Chris taught me a lot, and I learned it's more than just wall scribble and I really built up an appreciation for it. Now I really love and enjoy it. I think if more guys spread the word about it, more girls would be interested. I guess it just skipped our gender, because it is a really interesting, fun, art form that you can get your whole body and mind into. Guys, get out there and teach your females friends about it. Most people look at graffiti and say "I could never do that", though if people tried, they really could.

Never climbed a roof to paint, the worst thing I did was climb down a revene and through a mass of tangled (painful) bushes. There are a lot of really good writers around here, so when I watch others do something, or look at walls others have painted and get nervous and decied to just sit back and watch instead. I know the only way to get better is just to go do it, but for now I'll just keep practicing in the stair well.

10 hours? That dedication, I usualy get bored when I spend too long on one project. I like the messy/scribbly/drippy look for a lot of things, but being able to paint something really incricate would be awesome.

See now this is where all the girlies are at! I've been writing on and off since I was 13. Took a break at 19, did all the responsible things, now have two kids and took up sketching again about a year or so ago. Still have that old school style and I'm loving some of the new styles around today so slowly but surely trying to progress. I feel that I can't do illeagal stuff anymore due to crappy adult responsibilities and I wouldn't want to put my kids in jeopardy over not having their mum about. Here's a nice site:

i haven't much respect for women writers, i picked up a book on em and its all bubbly and happy looking shit, and alot of toy work, and they got famous from it, mad c is the only femal artist that has work that looks like it came from a dope piecer

But girls are bubbly and happy, dudes would bag on em if they were trying to act all hard and shit so I think it's cool they bring their own thing into the scene. I agree some of em get too far on just being a woman in a man's world, but there are SOME pretty dope ones out there. SLAM is the freshest I've seen, her style is different every time and I don't think a lot of it is girly at all, or hard. It's just fresh.
