So i have been thinking about what i want to do as a photographer and have been leaning towards bands and stuff (shows and promo shots) and some portraits (senior portraits for ppl with little money) and modeling stuff.

d40 still a good entry level choice? someone online said that its not a great choice for portraits

I don't really understand why a d40 wouldn't be good for portraits. If thats the kind of thing you want to do your better off getting a cheap body and sinking money into lenses.

UpstateHate585

i was just thinking of how to get models lol. so basically, you just agree to get together and have a shoot, then giver her/him a copy of the finals?

i figure that its something that you both could add to your portfolios.

also, what do you need so you can hook ur camera up to ur computer so the image pops up on screen after you take it?

J.Channa
10-14-2009, 09:50 AM
If you're selling the pics, or taking them for a client like a magazine or paper, then the model usually wants to get paid. But if its just for your portfolio usually an exchange works.

for changing only the plant colour; you can make a selection of the plants and then adjust whatever you want (assuming you have photoshop or a similar program)

Noise is exactly what the D3 does not have, it's what it's famous for. It sacrificed megapixels for almost no noise. It's amazing, I just used one owned by the guy I was assisting tonight.

If you want raw pixel quality, for landscape and shit like that, get d3000, if you want to be shooting moving targets in low light, (which you are) get the d40. Get the d40 while they are being sold, they will not be around for much longer. And they are dirt cheap.

What would you recommend for me? I want to shoot a large variety of everything. Sports, landscapes etc. And i want something that would be compatible with many different lenses

Wanting lens compatibility is the big one for you them, that means you'd want a D90 or second hand D80.

word thanks perve. i plan on shooting bands and would like to get into some work with models too. maybe simple senior portraits for people who dont have the cash to get them done at a studio. or some other model type stuff. i think im gonna stop looking for a camera, im pretty set on the d40

i am gonna start looking for maybe another lens like a fish eye and accessories that i might need (tripod, those remote flash things, making reflectors)

Remote flashes will be most key for you, I've shown you this guys site but look at it again, he uses remote flash ALOT in his band photos. u kan see them firing from all over the place, and makes great lighting.

I'd like to see the horse, chimp, and old lady fully in the frame, but I like. Perhaps try out the exposure2 plugin for photoshop, it may liven up your B&W conversion a little. Might want to look into the EF 50mm 1.8 II (or 1.4 if you don't mind the premium) for portriats. What telephoto did you use on the 3rd pic?

Just click your aperture down a few stops!! For example if your shooting at f/8, stop down to f/11 which lets in less light ! Or adjust the lights individually. Remember the lighting has to be controlled manually, so practice a lot before a real gig and remember the basic settings that work for most occasions.

so i decided to make a myspace (lame i know) for my photography and design stuff. here's what i got in the description does it sound lame? lol

My name is -----. I am a photographer and designer. I support the local music scene as much as I can and like to help bands out. I do however plan to do senior portraits for people who can't afford the sometimes ridiculous prices of studios or any portraits for that matter as well as helping models add to their portfolio and in return I add to mine.
Some services i offer include (but are not limited to):

Band promotional shoots
Senior Portraits
Live band pictures
Myspace layouts
shirt designs
Band logos
Posters
I will try our best to make sure you are satisfied.

prices vary we can work something out. if you can't afford something, but can hook me or my band up with maybe some recording time or something useful, we can talk. or catch me in a good mood and i might do something for free.

contact me on here if you're looking to have something done. Thanks

im going to add an email on there too.

Those photos with the flames are sweet, but you should crop off the extra like whats not in the mirror. Get a plain background so it doesn't distract the photo. Try to shoot one in pure darkness too.

I would buy this if you want three flashes. They have options for four receivers or more.

http://cgi.ebay.com/3-Receiver-Remote-Flash-Trigger-Canon-5D-5DII-50D-40D_W0QQitemZ280402801115QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCamera _Camcorder_Remotes?hash=item41494f31db

Also If I were you I'd buy some stands for the flashes, unless your cool with just sitting them ontop of the monitor speakers and things like that. Might vibrate and fall of and break though. They have to be used on manual, so make sure you practice with them and get some settings that work. I usually have my flash on around half power at around F/9 and 1/125th of a second. I play around those numbers more or less.

You don't need any plugs. they work wirelessly via your hotshoe. The one I posted is fine for you. I have the same brand and they work great. Four channel has nothing to do with the amount of flashes. You can have any number of flashes one any single channel. Get the one I suggested pal.

You don't need any plugs. they work wirelessly via your hotshoe. The one I posted is fine for you. I have the same brand and they work great. Four channel has nothing to do with the amount of flashes. You can have any number of flashes one any single channel. Get the one I suggested pal.

And empty can, don't you dare ask about a D40. I've spent pages saying how good they are.

nvm, im on crack, i looked at the wrong thing

thanks man

alright, this is the last question on the d40 (until i get it of course haha jk) but i was wondering if anyone knew a good place to get it that's reliable and cheap. im trying to find the cheapest one so i can get other shit too. im not looking for used or refurbished ones. well maybe a refurb depending on price.

thanks
