Can someone help me. I have a Sony A200 with kit lens atm, at christmas i'm thinking about getting a sigma 17-70 lens and a pack of filters.
Can someone point me in the direction of a basic filter pack
kmcdon3960

Why do you want to get a 17-70 lens? Isn't that very close to the focal length of your kit? You'll probably want to look at fast primes or telephoto instead.
Good filters to get are going to be your basic polarizer and uv. If you shoot alot of black and white you may want to look into a yellow and red filter, to help up the contrast a bit. You might want to look into neutral density also

If you like landscape get a wide angle, but wider than 17mm.
Try the tokina 11-16mm or tokina 12-24mm. Both are great wide angles but the former has constant f/2.8 aperture while the latter has f/4.
I have the 11-16 and I love it. I'm pretty sure they come in canon and nikon mounts.

Those cheap fisheyes are ok as a novelty but they aren't sharp at all on the edges. The cheapest your looking at is the 10.5mm DX fisheye, but you won't be able to use autofocus on your d40 with it.

Forget tripod for now, forget studio lights, buy one decent SB-600 and then more cheap flashes, forget cable releases, grip is handy simply for shooting portrait, I use mine constantly, no need for filters in what your doing. Remember if you want a fisheye you won't be able to use it with auto focus on your D40, which sucks.

that does kinda suck, a fisheye can wait though, it's not super important. the reason i wanted a tripod and a possible studio lights is that shows isnt the only thing i want to shoot. i want to do senior portraits and various stuff with models as well

Nikon fisheyes only work with cameras that have auto focus motors. So anything that isn't a d40 d60 d3000 or d5000. A fisheye is so wide anyway its pretty easy to focus manually.

Those cheap fisheyes are ok as a novelty but they aren't sharp at all on the edges. The cheapest your looking at is the 10.5mm DX fisheye, but you won't be able to use autofocus on your d40 with it.
i was doin some reasearch and it said that you can tape the focus ring somewhere between infinity and 2 feet you will almost always be in focus. whatevs even if im not i can manualy focus it. granted it would be a pain in the ass for short-on-time shots.
PERVERTO
10-27-2009, 08:21 PM
Fisheyes are useless unless used really really close to your subject, so basically that taping the focus ring wouldn't work. If you shot at small apertures like F11 it would probably work but shooting at night at large apertures then it probably wouldn't. Whenever I shoot my party photos, I am always within 1-2 feet of the subject with a fisheye.

They are cool if the distortion created by being so close to your subject is what you want, (huge nose, big eyes, large forehead etc) but it is not a true representation of your subject. Again, it's just a novelty. Thats why pro's use huge 70-200mm 2.8 lenses when shooting people in studios etc. The distance flattens the subject so that it is the most flattering for the subject. Getting up close with a fisheye makes the subject's nose look huge and isn't appealing for the subject.
My fisheye is tiny, about the size of a large 50mm. The canon 50mm's are bigger even.
Fisheyes are dope for making things look 'zany'. And they are great for making a shit party look like it's amazing.

Build up a portfolio and send it to every advertising agency I can. Also create an architecture portfolio and try get some work out of that. Start from the bottom, charge competitively and build a name for myself slowly.
Keep emailing photographers and try tp become a non paid assistant. Make sure you tell them how much you like their work, and why. Also say why you are into photography and the kinds of photography you are into, and why he would want you as his assistant. Some photographers hate assistant's and hate being teachers, others love it. Just keep trying.

Perrrrrrrrrrsonally I like black and white to be reserved for black and white film... You've spent thousands on a digital camera with an incredible picture quality, so why degrade and use black and white?
Thinking out loud here, I'll probably regret that statement later.
saying bw degrades picture quality completely depends on the process and the person behind that process, its not something that can be generalized. I can see what your saying with simple black and white settings on your camera, but if your shooting raw and converting in post how is that degrading the quality? I wouldn't say the style degrades image quality, more the photographer shooting and working on it.
and I really enjoy film, but if you spend a grip of cash on a dslr why not take advantage of the convenience of it? Film is great for fine art stuff, and theres something in being able to hold your negatives or positives, but its not very practical.
PERVERTO
10-28-2009, 10:50 PM
I more meant that I dislike when people try to make their crisp digital files look like film, adding grain, making them black and white etc. It seems silly to spend so much on a camera for its picture quality to then take it back 10 years and make it look like film.
But my comment was full of holes.

kmcdon3960
10-28-2009, 11:49 PM
it's cheap as hell to develop film. You can get a camera, tank, chems, thermometer, and clips for under $100. You can do it for under $50 if you try hard. developer and fixer and wetting agent will be less then $20 every few months.
The expensive part is the enlarger or scanner.
Robbie P
10-29-2009, 01:49 AM
shooting film yourself is pretty inexpensive. you can get pretty cheap enlargers too, like 100-200 for something half-crap, but it prints photos.
but having a lab takes up so much space. you got 4 tanks for developing, then you have to have a cabinet for your negatives to dry, then another 4 trays for when you have to print, a fat enlarger, and then a place to dry prints. shit's hectic. and all this has to be in a dark ass place.

and about the cost, it might be cheaper than i imagine but for the equipment, chemicals, paper, film, i'm sure it adds up
i just get my digital photos printed at a photo lab for 30 cents each. much more convenient.

If you are looking to print high quality ink jet prints at poster size, d40 isn't the best. But realistically how often are you going to be doing this. For a simple laser jet print at poster size d40 is fine. The quality won't matter too much.
well i probably would do it every once in a while. and would most likely take them somewhere that does big prints. i dont have a printer.

sigma 10-20 can be had for under $500, stopped down it's as good as the canon.
I was literally a couple feet from this wall when I shot this. I'm assuming you're looking at L glass for that price, but the ef-s 10-22 is only $750. The ef-s won't mount on a full frame body, but the sigma will mount, but not give a full image (you can always center crop though)

ive been looking into the d80 which i think has a flash sync speed of up to 1/200. it seems a lot from the d40. but i remember perve tellin me that if i get some crap the suffices but will want something different, i will end up spending twice the cash getting the nicer stuff in the future.
im thinking i will eventually need some nicer lenses and most of the ones that autofocus with the d40 are hella expensive. does flash sync speed matter that much?
also, i am trying to prioritize what lenses i'm gonna want in the future so i can start looking now. i will most likely be shooting band promos, portraits, and live shows. seeing as im still learning about what does what maybe you guys could help me pick out some lenses.
for live shots i figure i would want a faster lens, i saw a 50mm f1.8. would that be good? im still kinda lost on the "mm" stuff. and band promos i would use the same lens as the portrait/model shots and possibly a fisheye.
sorry for nagging, just trying to make sure i get the right shit

Flash sync matters if you want to freeze movement at night. (EG, freezing a singer jumping into the crowd or something) If you have a slow sync speed, he will be a blurr when using flash. So it does matter to you. Nikon from now on will NOT be making lenses that are not compatible with the D40. So don't worry about that. EVery new lens from now on will be completely compatible with your D40, even the pro lenses. It's only lenses from back in the day that won't auto focus. But auto focus isn't everything anyway, it's a luxury. If I were you, I'd buy a D40, keep the kit 18-55mm, and buy a 50mm f/1.8AF-S for low light when you can afford it.
That is all you need for now. Once you understand more about photography and why you need a better camera, you can get a better camera. No point getting something you know nothing about.
I'm not answering anymore. Buy a D40. If you are that cut up about it, buy a D90, but you will sacrifice your maximum shutter speed for use with flash if you do so.

Nope it won't. Canon's EOS system was good from the start and had the focus motor on all its lenses, but it fucked over anyone that owned their manual focus system and had to sell all their gear and switch over. Nikon chose to keep their manual focus lenses being compatible, and that is why only now are they switching over to the canon system.

Upstate mm basically determines how much a lens zooms or how wide it is. 50mm is known as the standard focal length cos it basically represents what the eye sees without zooming or going wide. anything above 50mm is a telephoto, eg 70mm 135mm, and anything below 50mm is regarded as a wide angle, eg 35mm 28mm 21mm and so on. I personally find 50mm is too long for me, so I treat my standard lens as a 35mm. But thats personal choice.
But then you get into DX crop factors vs FX full frame, and then shit REALLY gets confusing. It's even more confusing with canon. But thats for another day.

Do you also print your own pictures? Although a number of them are really nice photos, i couldn't help noticing a number of dust particles and hairs in the images. This error is most commonly found in the printing process (as you probably know) and can be fixed by dusting your negatives before printing, or dusting your enlarging equipment.
