Nah, I don't print, just straight to the scanner, but my house has a couple cats and we smoke all the time so there's all kinds of shit floating around in the air that gets stuck on the negs. I've been having a problem with water spots, even though I'm using wetter.

I will definetly try dusting them off next time I shoot a roll, any particular method you recommend?

Im going to have to disagree with the post bellow this one, i sure as hell wouldnt want to risk damaging my negatives with an air duster. What i would recomend is going to your local photography supply store and pick up (im not sure the technical term) but a dusting cloth, or lense cleaning cloth. Im not sure if other materials can be substituted. But preety much delicate, scratch proof cleaning cloth works best.

Place the cloth in your hand, then place the strip of negatives on the cloth. Sandwich the negative with the cloth and swipe the negative threw the cloth, emiminating most dust and hair particles. Repeat as nessesary. If your scanners dusty as well i would in fact recomend an air duster, followed by the hand cloth to fine tune any remaining particles.

But seriousy, are you using an APS sensor camera or full frame? on aps (1.6 crop) the 50mm will be closer to an 85, so that will be a great portriat lens, you might look into a 70-200 zoom also

Its tricky cos with DX cameras, 35mm becomes 50mm. This is the confusing thing I was talking about earlier.

If you can afford the 35 f/1.8, get that, if not, get a 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4.

For flash get an SB-600, you can't go wrong.

get a point & shoot
sell it
get a better point and shoot
sell it
get a dlsr (it doesn't matter what brand)
Get lenses
put them in the closet
get film slr
use that for a while
get rangefinder

be happy.
This way will cost you a lot more money, but the experience is what matters

its not the camera im worried about, its the film and processing that would prolly kill me. i dont know how/dont have the room to do it myself. i like to take a lot of pictures. i kind of need to in order to get better. though film forces you to think about ur shot, it also allows you to take shots without worrying that ur wasting film and money. i might get a film camera but there arent too many applications that i can think where a film camera would benefit me. dont get me wrong, film looks awesome, but i dont think that it would be great for me.

If you have a voltmeter, you can check to see if there is voltage between the fire pin and ground pin on the flash shoe

nah, if it fires on the manual button then I don't think it's the flash that's at fault
Definetly check your camera settings, 1 of 3 things could be wrong
1: bad camera setting
2: no voltage at flash shoe
3: camera hotshoe malfunction

You might be able to use a wire to short out the fire pin and ground terminal on the hotshoe, but I dunno if it'll fuck up a sb600, if it was an older flash I'd say go for it, but the sb may have delicate circuitry.

I'm betting on the camera having a setting wrong.
Try doing it in all modes (auto, program, tv, av, manual)

that picture is pure ass, i wasnt actually trying to produce a nice photo, its out of focus and theres no composition, atliest i didnt intend there to be one

i dont use presets, ive never switched the camera over to auto, never will
but as far as aperature and whatnot, i think that was 100iso, 4.5f, and probobly 10 seconds or something like that, its a remote shutter so as soon as it ran out i stopped it

Neither of them is going to give you exactly the setting you need. You have to mess with it a little. Put your shutter speed really low.

Just some cheap 100ISO fuji or something.

The dust is enevitable with film scanning, its easy to get rid of with the patch tool in photoshop. I cleaned up the one of the 2 girls and the lake, for example. Takes a little while, but I find it enjoyable.
