Yeah man, get on some film, it's tons more fun than digital I think. You have a very general idea of what your shots look like, but it's all a guessing game for the first while, until you learn your shit real well.

The real fun is getting your negatives back and seeing the results.... so exciting when you have some dope ones....

Hell yeah, but it's definitely a bummer when your rolls are all fucked up. 'Cuz I take forever to shoot film, so it's like I waste a few weeks of work.

why not just get a cheap modern nikon film body, can't you use your same lenses?
-Empty-Can-
11-14-2009, 12:29 PM
Talking to me?
Well the reason he doesn't want me using it is because he doesn't want to waste film. He doesn't use it either. You pretty much have to know what your doing though because you can't take a picture and review it.
I'll get one one day.

How good is a deal for a fe2 with a nikon 35-105mm Ais lens for £120 including postage?
Edit: I'm new to film, how much does film cost on average to how many photos you can take? Also, I guess you develop them yourselves.
kmcdon3960
11-14-2009, 12:43 PM
naw man, I was talking to shifted, cus doesn't he already have a few nikon lenses?
I'm not sure about compatibility cus nikon is wierd like that.
emtycan though, just go check out thrift stores and farmers market, you're bound to find a halfway decent film slr for less then $30 The only way to learn is to fuck up.
There's a show tonight so I shall practice my off camera flashing, hopefully it's not a waste.

not feeling the tiltviewer. the photos page would load alot faster if you cropped the sections out individually instead of grouping them all together and mapping the links. also not using alt text in your images won't help with search engines, neither will the flash viewer.

i was looking into getting 3 remote firing strobes, with umbrellas, and a black muslin backdrop
idk the best way to go, money is semi important, im trying to keep it under $700
No need for studio lighting unless you are working only in a studio, I like small flash cos it is portable and can run off battery. Studio lights need power or a generator to run. My flashes have umbrellas but I never use them, I like harsh contrasty light from my flashes. there are specially built flash systems for use on the road, with heavy duty power packs and pocket wizards, just have a look on the web.

http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/ekmps/shops/lensesforhire/images/nikon-pc-e-85mm-f2.8-d.jpg
Not that exact one, cos they cost $1900US, but a similar nikon PC lens second hand.
personally I'd ditch the pc and buy a 4x5 and film. an 85 on a crop sensor is too telephoto for my tastes other than for details, full shots I'd definitely want to go wider
I'll Poke Your Wet Cunt

yeah, but a 4x5 is 3 times the price of a used PC. I'm getting a 28mmPC on a cropped sensor, should be okay. I'll need a bit of distance though.

this is similar to the set i got

nah, i was gonna say, your pics looked a little noisy, its probobly just me not being used to earth tone nature pics..you sould DEFINETLY use the sun to your advantage when taking those tall grass pics and shit, that one pic you posted is straight fire son! imo, you should really work with some more angles to make the pics pop, i know how much you hate editing, but you should atliest up the cotrast a bit and make em' more crisp
...there was alot of potential with that run down house, i'd have a field day with that shit, for the pic inside it, i would have just opened the aperature more, i know you said you didnt have a tripod, but if you did you could have done a long exposure and that shit would have been pretty dope

You got a D3000? That's supposed to replace the D60 right? I wish my D60 shot like the D90, I love that camera but it's too bulky for my feminine hands.
I find the standard lense is a nice all-arounder but seriously frustrating when most of my shots need more of a wide-angle/telephoto. I'm doing Portrait shots atm and I just can't seem to get that soft look I'm going for. Aside from the colourcast is there anything I can do?
dinedgc
11-23-2009, 08:47 PM
yeah, it replaced the D60 and the D5000 takes the D90's place, the D3000 has some quirky add ins, i can do tilt shift editing on my camera as well as a stop motion feature, just wish it has auto exposure bracketing, oh well, i just wont be lazy and change the shutter speed manually for HDRs
not experienced too much at portraits tho, at least no formal ones, really enjoy candid portraits however, but i'm sure there are tutorials out there, the only thing i can think may help would be to try and soften your lighting, either an umbrella shade or bounce all your light off white and back onto the subject (helps with harsh light spots), sorry i can't help much more
JackJill
11-23-2009, 09:00 PM
The D60 also has Stop Motion, I used it for one of my assignments at school because I didn't have a video camera. That's the nice thing about the D90 because it actually has a video recorder on it.

I wish my D60 shot like the D90
I just can't seem to get that soft look I'm going for. Aside from the colourcast is there anything I can do?
The difference between picture quality between D60 and D90 will be minimal. Only difference in a slightly smaller picture size in megapixels (which doesn't matter) and a bit better rendering of ISO with the D90.
As for portraits, buy a cheap 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4, check out E series nikon 50mm's on ebay, they go for around 60$US which is fuck all. They aren't very sharp wide open so they will give you the dreamy soft look you are after.
D5000 takes the D90's place,
No, the D5000 did not replace the D90, they are very different cameras and the D90 still outranks it entirely.
The D3000 is no where near as good a camera as the D60 or D40, the D3000 has appalling performance at high ISO's. Get a D40.
This explains why shifty thought your images look noisy, dinedgc.

thanks jackjill, i'm using a D3000 i got a few months back, still working with the 18-55 mm lens that came with it, i want a nice fisheye lens, not adapter tho, and a zoom lens, christmas is coming at a good time
18-55mm is a great lens. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, very sharp. You cannot buy a fisheye lens if you want your auto focus to work on your D3000. If you are happy manually focusing for each and every shot, go hard and buy a 10.5mm DX.
I suggest you get the 70-300mm Nikon for a cheap zoom lens, if you do not need F/2.8 constant aperture.
How good is a D3000? There was an ad in the paper for $500. I said I wanted a camera for christmas and this is alot cheaper than the one I want
No, buy a D40.

this was the fisheye i was looking at, what do you think? and i'm not worried at all about focusing for each shot, it'll be worth it http://www.amazon.com/Rokinon-Aspherical-Fisheye-Digital-Cameras/dp/B002LTWDSK/ref=wl_itt_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1Q79G1BJQ9SWB&colid=2QMS2RORH8JMW
and funny you mentioned the 50 mm f/1.8, i was looking at one of those too
out of a zoom, fisheye, and the 50 mm, what do you think is priority? do have to admit the fisheye is wanted just for funky perspectives and shots

That fisheye is circular, eg it takes photos like this.
http://www.usa.canon.com/uploadedimages/FCK/Image/2008/Interviews/Laforet/NYC_FishEye_web.jpg
Lame, in my opinion, may as well buy a 40$ fisheye attatchment. If youre going to buy one, you are best of just saving for a real deal. The 10.5mm Nikon DX is the one I own, and it's amazing.
As I said, look on ebay for an E-Series 50mm Nikon f/1.8, they are extremely cheap, or else buy a 50mm AF-S if you have the money.
Your priority should be a 50mm. They are really difficult to shoot well, and if you can master it, you can shoot anything. Fisheyes are great fun but are useless for anything serious.
The D5000 has the same sensor and auto focus system, but lacks the lens compatibility and ISO abilities of the D90.

Oh, and focusing manually for each shot is fucking annoying, and renders it useless for the only reasons you'd buy it, night time party shots cos you can't manually focus in the dark, and skateboarding because your subjects are moving to fast to focus on them yourself.

I find the standard lense is a nice all-arounder but seriously frustrating when most of my shots need more of a wide-angle/telephoto.
The equivalent of a DX 18-55mm in FX format is approx 28-70mm, which is both pretty wide and quite zoomy. but if you need a lot wider and a lot more zoom, a better choice for you would be to buy a wide angle lens, and a zoom lens seperately.
I suggest a 11-16mm f/2.8 tokina for the wide end
http://www.onestop-digital.com/catalog/images/tokina11-16.jpg
and a 50-135mm f/2.8 tokina for a zoom

I have both and they are great.

Why amazon? That 50 you posted won't auto focus on your D3000.
Buy this as a 50mm for a cheap as fuck option, manual focus though, some are even on ebay for like $40:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-Nikkor-50mm-50-mm-f1-8-series-E-standard-lens-exc_W0QQitemZ220513946448QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCamera _Lenses?hash=item3357a7cb50#ht_4323wt_1167
or if you have cash for an auto focus 35/50mm equivalent:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-35mm-f-1-8G-F-1-8-G-DX-AF-S-Nikkor-Lens-NEW-USA_W0QQitemZ200409796216QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCamera _Lenses?hash=item2ea95ace78
And yeah, that zoom's ok but I doubt you'd ever use it. Buy a zoom once you can afford a constant f/2.8 zoom and shoot enough portraits for you to have a proper use for it.

Did you get a little paper book called the 'Manual' with your camera?
Read it

it's gotta be set on manual or shutter priority i think and you spin the little scroll wheel thingo til you find what speed you want, on a side note you better have a tripod for night shots or prop your camera on something, i personally only shoot on manual so i can fuck with the shutter and aperture separately

The best way to learn things is screwing around with stuff. At first I would just switch the aperature, shutter speed and ISO until i found something that worked. Now I know wha i'm doing after having expierience and talking to people. I only shoot manual too.

Yes you will have to focus it everytime, until they bring out a fisheye with a focus motor on it.
All good fisheyes are around the same price. If you want a cheap fisheye, try this one. Ignore other cheaper fisheyes.

All canon EOS lenses have the focus motor on the lens itself. SO any canon lens focuses on any canon EOS camera.
But this means their newer lenses do not mount AT ALL on their old pre EOS film cameras.
Nikon fisheyes at the moment only focus on cameras that have the focus motor inside the camera, eg, D80 and up.

Not if you buy a nikon DX fisheye. The 10.5mm is DX and the 16mm is for FX sensors.
This is why you must save for the nikon rather than get a cheaper brand

They autofocus on any nikon DSLR that ISN'T a d40, d40x, d60, d3000 or d5000. If you own any of those cameras, the lens will NOT auto focus on it.
If you own a nikon DSLR that is better than said cameras, it will autofocus. Why is this so hard to understand?

anyways, i work at an oakley store and the traffic that comes into the store is nuts, weekends we usually have an $8,000 day
anyways, every year this mall opens at midnight for black friday...last yer there were 3 fights that broke out, and there was an hour wait JUST to get off the exit on the expressway to get to the mall
its pure madness to say the least
im gonna document it tonight :D
i thouht it would make for some amazing pictures, people making complete asses o themselves, hahaha
andif any news stations or papers or websites decide to cover the mall's crazyness, (which they will) ill be there to offer up some pics at their expense ;)
ill post up probobly tomorow or something but its 8:00pm by me now, 4 hours...hah!
happy thanksgiving everyone
