d5000 > T1i
?
discuss.
well if youre lookin to use the video mode, t1i is most definately better. But other than that, it is basically the same, except that d5000 has the screen that comes out, which i think is stupid. If you are used to nikon, go with nikon, if you are used to canon, go with the canon. I got the t1i cause my dad already had some lenses for his xti.

This is why we can't bring nice things to parties. You can't tell the extent of the damage from the picture, but the focus and aperture are completely broken, and the shutter won't fire. Oh well.
@ that olympus ep1, those things are pretty sweet. They can mount all kinds of lenses, such as M-mount leica. 2.0x crop factor though, but I'd love one.

The camera i used for the shot above would only cost around $150 USD or even less. It has easy to adjust settings and can be set to full manual to allow for complete control. Its a good camera to learn artistic basics of photography.

The XSi is a great camera, I have one and it does pretty much everything I could ask for in a camera.
The higher iso's are a little noisy, but not any worse then other cameras in that price range.
Get a 50mm 1.8 (1.4 if you got the money) and a flash
The kit lens is pretty decent stoped down, but it's crap wide open.

i would definetly go with the d40, such an amazing camera at an amazing price...you cant go wrong
kzmachine, a remote shutter will allow you to keep the shutter open as long as you want it for until you stop it, theres a bulb option on the camera...this is good for night shots, or long exposure shots
a circular polarizer is a polarized filter for your lense that will adjust as you rotate the filter, it basicaly takes the glare off of reflective things
you said you wanted to get into street shots, theres buildings on streets as well as cars, and plenty of other shit, you rotate the filter and bam! majorly reduced glare
i recommend the d40 because as a beginner, you dont wanna throw alot of money into things you arent going to use, the d40 is a great beginner level camera that you can build off of for a price you cant beat, its rugged, its durable, its simple and easy to use, its compatable with almost anything you can throw at it, extremely versatile...its a camera that gives you just about everything you'll need and nothing you dont

the mm size on your lens has nothing to do with the diameter of the lens or the size of the filter, on the end of lens or anywhere on the lens there will be a symbol of a 0 with a line through it and a # next to it...thats the size filter you need to get
the mm #'s your looking at is focal length
polarizers by themselves will spin freely, when screwed onto the end of the lens, you rotate the filter until the desired look is achieved...as you rotate it youll see the glare and what-not vanish and re-appear

Because nikons are strange, some lenses have the focus motor in the lens, some don't (and require the motor to be in the camera, which some cameras like the d40 don't have) so, if you end up with a camera with no motor and a lens with no motor, you're not going to autofocus.
Canon's EF lenses ALL have the motor in the lens.
any canon can mount any EF canon lens
with an adapter they can mount any FD canon lens, and any nikon lens.

I love me some manual focus, but there's usually no split prizm on modern slr's unless you change the focus screen out, so MF is a bitch without that.
I prefer this type of focussing anyway

I'm sorry for polluting this thread, but by using manual, it eliminates shutter lag, and can do burst shots rather quicky?

11-30-2009, 06:34 PM
yeah...i mean, as far as shooting a moving subject youll run into pics being out of focus when your subject gets further/closer away..
once your pics in focus and you start bursting shots, after the subject moves out of the focus point they'll be blurry
your best off just auto focusing, i shoot alot of things that require fast focusing and minimal intervals between shots
...really isnt a problem, unless your shooting many pics of cars or races it shouldnt be a problem
in well lit situations, autofocus will work for you just fine
its when you get to dark areas that will bring problems
I don't expect to take any shots of moving objects in dark or at night.

Theres a mode called AI-Servo that's made just for moving objects. I use it all the time when I shoot shows or the like, basically as long as you have the shutter half-pressed, it will constantly reevaluate the focus and track your subject, that way when you hit the button there's almost no lag from focussing. The downside is that it can eat up some batteries if you're shooting for a while like that.

3. Once you have a few decent shots and feel like you want to push this hobby on further because your limited with your camera, invest in a relatively cheap, entry level DSLR, just one that you can, change lenses, adjust shutter speed, that's all you really need for the time being, all entry level cameras are good enough with megapixels and other features.
4. Once you think your ready, get a few cheap lenses, I suggest the cheap 50mm 1.8, essential for any photography. Once you have a few lenses, your ready to upgrade to a newer body.
5. These tips are just helping you beginners out there from buying a top of the range camera, blowing thousands on equipment, thinking your going to love this hobby forever then falling out of love with it and having to sell everything at half the price you sold it for.

and well put thesecks, i see a lot of people going out and buying the most expensive camera mommy and daddy will pay for then not even knowing what aperture is, and some never try to find out, sticking the camera on auto and just snapping away, maybe getting a couple of decent shots out of a thousand, try pretending you have only 30 shots for an entire day, spend more time setting up for your shot then taking it
on those night/low light shots, get a tripod and lower your iso, the noise in the darker spots is incredibly distracting

Read the past few pages, it seems I am a valuable addition to this thread, and lately all I have done is abide by every rule and been helpful and respectful. Mostly for skating and motion shots, although I'll be using it for street and art as well. Burst shots is one thing, yeah, but I also need it to take the shot as soon as I click the shutter.
For skating shots in which you need a fast FPS (frames per second) you should wait, and save for something like a D90, with atleast a 5FPS rate. ANything below will be useless for your skating. Nikon D3's shoot at 13FPS, which is like a machine gun. It would also be wise to save for a D90, so that you can later buy the 10.5mm Fisheye for use with your skating photos. The combo would be perfect.

This is really nice.
I'm pretty dead-set on getting a Rebel XSI. It's right at the tip of my pricerange for the moment, I've played around with it, and love it. I'm mostly interested in shooting people (I may actually give you an infraction or something for cracking a joke about 'shooting people'). People are most interesting to me. I'm pretty set on the camera itself, unless anyone has a better suggestion for peopleshooting, but any other reccomendations for lenses and such?
It does not matter what camera you buy, a nice portrait lens will create the look you are going for. Something in the way of a 50mm F/1.8 or F/1.4 will create nice portraits. Care less about what camera you buy, and more about shooting.
http://i791.photobucket.com/albums/yy199/manfromthemoon/olympus-ep1.jpg
this camera looks amazing. and from what i hear (photagraphy blog review) it preforms just as nice. olympus E-P1. its essentially a compact dslr but it looks like an old maual film slr. E-P1 is $799 E-P2 is $1,099.
THis is a nice point and shoot, but it is really nothing more than that.... a point and shoot that can mount nice lenses.
Cos it's a point and shoot it shoots slow, is rubbish at high ISO's and is sluggish to use.

One quote that I think is pretty important if your serious about it
Stop Taking Pictures, Start Creating Images
Just had to get all that off my chest, just fed up of all these kids wanting to get into it and wasting thousands and not even knowing about rule of thirds
I don't start anything half-assedly. I learn about everything I intend to get into for months before I ever start. And I start doing it properly, with good equipment, lots of knowledge, and get good at it, quick, because of it. It's like people telling people to use shit paint when you start writing, as opposed to buying good paint. Buying hard-to-control, hard pressured, thin, runny paint isn't going to do anything to help anyone learn, and certainly not going to make their work look any better. The best way to learn to paint with aerosol is by using paint MADE for creating art, and I've always maintained that.
I don't have anyone buying SHIT for me. If I CHOOSE to spend money I MAKE on a quality camera, why the shit should you care? If I grow tired of photography (And, considering I've never grown out of any hobby I've ever pursued, this is unlikely) I'll still have a fucking nice camera for just taking pictures of shit. It's not like a skateboard, where if you decide you don't like skating, it becomes useless to you. You can ALWAYS use a camera, and as much as I travel, I'll ALWAYS have things to take pictures of. I see no reason you can't buy a good camera straight away if you can afford to spend money on it.
It does not matter what camera you buy, a nice portrait lens will create the look you are going for. Something in the way of a 50mm F/1.8 or F/1.4 will create nice portraits. Care less about what camera you buy, and more about shooting.

mate, my advice wasn't malicious or directed at anyone in particular, I don't even read the user names that post shit unless I see something I like and wanna say something to them.
And the thing about getting a really good camera straight off, no it doesn't bother me, I'm just thinking of you, if you don't need it, the money would probably be better use towards something else thats all.
My advice is just generic advice to everyone, just things I've learnt. No beef

Juggalos are American social outcasts that wear facepaint, and listen to ICP. They believe themselves hardcore, brutal, sick-minded motherfuckers, when in fact, they are all either fat, shaved-head white kids in beanies, or skinny, glasses-wearing white kids...in beanies.

basicaly theres a phase that alot of kids get into in the us, where they listen to icp (insane clown posse) and they get so consumed into the music to where they wanna be just like the band...and the band talks about drinking faygo, and killing people..note that they dress like ghetto ass clowns
its fucking retarded, words just cant describe it
their "followers" are called juggalos, and they wear little wristbands and shit to signify that their a "juggalo"
its your typical 13-17 year old stoner basicaly
a text book example would be the kids sitting in that tube, its nothing short of cliche to the subject

Word, the light form the sun on one side of his face and the flashlight on the other looks really nice, along with the amazing sky.
*****z know, sunset and sunrise are the two times you want to take photos! no matter what they look dope.
For these photos all I usually do it recovery tool to get back washed out whites, but thats about it, the photos in this set just came out pretty nice right out the camera. There is no messing with colours contrast or anything like that.
Although I should say, I built a contraption out of 5 or 6 plastic cups, which i taped together and put on my flash, aiming it upwards, it gives a really nice even light which gives soft even skin tones.

Lately I have been feeling like my shots are getting weak. Lacking originality and just coming out lame as hell. Does anyone else ever start to feel that way?

Word, the light form the sun on one side of his face and the flashlight on the other looks really nice, along with the amazing sky.
*****z know, sunset and sunrise are the two times you want to take photos! no matter what they look dope.
For these photos all I usually do it recovery tool to get back washed out whites, but thats about it, the photos in this set just came out pretty nice right out the camera. There is no messing with colours contrast or anything like that.
Although I should say, I built a contraption out of 5 or 6 plastic cups, which i taped together and put on my flash, aiming it upwards, it gives a really nice even light which gives soft even skin tones.
and AK(ill just refer to you as this since ive followed you collection with this name)
i didnt fully understand but did you mean yo basically adjusted the bracket for the highlights so theyd be darker with detail?
and thanks for the flash tip. still yet to get on that. im still learning no-flash+manual still-life
oh yeah, crits on my shit? i know some are obvious but just bang on em.

if you hold option+shift+H in apple aperture, the washed out highlights will show up in red, and the underexposed shadows will show up in blue, I usually use the 'recovery' tool to bring these whites back to retain the detail lost.

No, so far you had the best response yet. It's true, the reason I feel like this is probably because I have gone out for the sole purpose of taking shots, where as in the past I would just take my camera everywhere.

Probably should have been playing with your ISO instead. Sky looks super grainy so I'm guessing you had it rather high.

the better the camera, the better the ISO quality, except in the case of the D3000. shooting a nikon D3 at ISO 6400 you can barely see any noise at all, its amazing.
On normal cameras however, I find even ISO 200 too noisy, I stick with ISO 100, or Lo-1.

yeah sadly it was(800 i believe). partly cause i was really tired from work, partly cause i was getting frostbite so i wanted to do some quickies.
shoulda just took time and mount it on a tripod, and i never really leave 100 unless i need a faster shutter speed

I disagree with your better the camera theory. 6400 on a 5d mark II is horribly grainy.

Perhaps its just the nikons d700 d3's etc, they can virtually see in the dark.

Haha, but still in my general age range.
That's pretty tight secks, I'm just not a huge fan of the light trails thing in general. Sadly, I have a feeling I'm gonna be going to a few raves soon to take such pictures of folks and whatnot.
