So I'm thinking of snagging a Tripod, but I must ask, why the need for a really "nice" tripod? I'm thinking as long as it holds my camera still, I'll be fine, but I figured I'd ask and save myself some 50 bucks I might spend on something that's totally not worth my time.

PS.

apologiez up front for not finding a perect mouth to take a picture of

the purpose of a tripod is to keep the camera stable, a flimsy tripod wont do this, in my opinion..."light weight" tripods are bad, if theres alot of wind youll have the camera shaking...ive wanted to get my camera close to passing trains but i cant because i have a garbage ass tripod
...youll also find yourself re adjusting the legs several times every time you set it up because theres no tention in the spread..this can be a major pain in the ass...cheap tripods also eliminate heads...heads are very convinient, because you never have to take the head off of the camera, its a quick camera to tripod mount every time, just slide it on...opposed to screwing the tripod screw into the camera every time
...theres nothing wrong with getting a cheap tripod for a started, you actuially should...that way if nothing bothers you, awesome...you didnt pay much at all for it, if shit bothers you, you know exactly what to look for when it comes to features in the next tripod

It all depends what you want it for mate, if your just doing it as more of a hobby, laugh, you can get a cheapish tripod and it will do you fine...i mean I was using a 6.99 tripod i got from tesco for a year, literally all my photos from the past year were using it...and they came out the same, or even better than my mate who used a 170 setup....

I am going to be investing into an expensive tripod just after christmas though. Its 140 for the full setup but I think it will be very very worth it, its light weight, relativley small. Which for me is what I need, I need something I can fit into my rucksack, or into a smal tripod bag, and wont get in the way when climbing shit or crawling into places etc....Thats why I loved my tesco one, it was fuckin tiny, it was cheap, but it was big enough to use in most places I went. But this Manfrotto tripod is carbon fibre, so its light weight, and its non-extended length is around 50-60cm, and it extends a lot bigger!
Also the tripod can do this magical thing :D

Monkey, do you live in central london then? and what camera you got

I'm looking to get a new flash around christmas time, maybe the Vivtar 285hv, I had one before but it blew up, I think I may have pressed the test button too many times though, would this of caused it to blow? Bit hesitant to get another if it will blow up on me again.

Just need a cheap off camera flash so I can do some wireless flash stuff

yer mate, well not central, but south london...i kinda live on the out skirts which is nice...easy enough to get into london...but you dont get any of the shit of living in london....and im using a d40x at the moment, but ive got 3 pentax mx film cameras which get used regularly :)

Ive got a vivitar 5600.....old flash but it does the job fine still! Just go to your local camera shop, usually stuff sells for pretty cheap, i got 3 flashes only little ones, but when set to slave they can be handy for setups....got them all for 15 quid :)

D60 and D3000 are virtually the same camera, and both don't handle high ISO's very well, you won't notice any real difference.

If your going to sell it, save for a while before selling it and do a real upgrade to a D90 or used D80.

Or alternatively, for night shots, shoot at 100ISO and use a tripod. I never use high ISO's except for fast paced night time people event photos.

EG. this was shot at 1000 ISO on my D300, you get what you pay for really.

Word, invest in a film scanner to scan negatives. Buy a Nikon Fe2, sick film camera with aperture priority and matrix metering so you can't go wrong exposure wise. A great camera to learn film on, not too different from your D5000 or whatever you got.

ISO is no substitute for a fast lens. If you take a lot of night shots, buy a fast lens, F/2.8 or faster. ISO will ruin digital photos, a fast lens will not.

People don't realise, lenses are far more important than cameras, buy a good lens, and it will last you 20 years, whereas your cameras you use it on will last a max of 1 year. Spend more on lenses than cameras anyday. Lenses do not depreciate in value the way cameras do.

Seriously, if you guys are listening to me, which you're obviously not, buy a fast wide, anything that is f/2.8 constant, and a fast tele.

eg, a 11-16mm f/2.8 and a 70-200mm f/2.8.

This is ALL YOU NEED EVER.

Forget midrange zooms like 24-55mm etc.

All you need is a fast wide, a fast tele and a fast 50mm. It's all I own and I've never needed anything else.

It's also all that pro's use, look at any paparazi or photojournalist and you will see two nikon D3's or canon 1dsMK2's, one body with a wide and the other with a tele.

No other lens is needed. Macros are for fags.

Word is bond.

Robbie P

fast mid's are sweet, man. they're wide enough that you can frame an entire person in the shot, but you're close enough to get a significant amount of depth of field i.e. bokeh. noise isn't even that bad i think, as long as it doesn't distract it can add to an image.

yeah i hear that. now i heard nikons had better lower end lenses but canon has the wicked EF mounts i can use film DSLR lenses with aswell..

...so i went with the canon since im sure ill be investing in lenses and will still be able to use the same lenses with an upgraded body in the future.
did i do the right choice there?

as for the speed, i hear most lenses are better stopped down?
i started to just use all my lenses a couple stops down which fucks me for speed. im almost always stuck with a tripod and longer exposures cause i do stick with iso100 for shots i can take time with.

Both Nikon and Canons lense are up to par with eachother, in both cheap and pro levels. Whether you go Canon or Nikon is up to how you feel about the cameras, which feels better to you. Your definately on the right track investing in lenses more than cameras, cameras come and go but lenses stay with you for life, if they're good.

Lenses usually have a peak sharpness at around f/5.6, get softer as the open up and lose sharpness again as you move up to f/22. How good a lens is wide open determines how epensive it is usually. This is why leica lenses are so spectacular, completely sharp even wide open at f/1.4, no nikon or canon lens is even close.

Fact is, for night shots, no matter what lens you got, your gonna need a tripod, unless you own a D3.

Basic difference is D90 is an amerture camera, with a simpler auto focus system. It's layout is the same as the D60 and cameras before it, and it has the 'idiot' modes on the dial like 'night portrait mood' etc.

D300 is more of a pro's camera in the way it is layed out, it shares it's looks with the D3, it's made of metal, its weather sealed, its only got M A S and P modes among other things its superior auto 51 point auto focus system.

fast mid's are sweet, man. they're wide enough that you can frame an entire person in the shot, but you're close enough to get a significant amount of depth of field i.e. bokeh. noise isn't even that bad i think, as long as it doesn't distract it can add to an image.

Or instead of spending thousands on a mid range zoom, one could just step back a few feet and get the same effect.
The longer the lens, and the further you are away from the subject, the more bokeh there is anyway, so portraits look nicer with tele zooms taken from further away.

:)

Word is bond.

who's talking about subsituting iso's for fast lenses??

but fuck buying a camera, ill invest in a better camera after i get used to the FREE one im getting, im getting a minolta with some lenses and shit

That's what I've been thinking too. I'd like to think I've learned quite a bit in the last 3-4 months I've been really into photography, but it's not like I've been using it really, aside from aperture and shutter speeds, it's not like there's a lot more that you really need to do. You guys are over-complicating your shots.

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8

the ladies love the 70-200. I cant take it out without getting mad comments.

Far as the whole fast zoom vs fast mid thing goes I don't think theres a right and wrong, it all depends on what your shooting but personally as convenient as faster zooms go, I'd rather shoot with primes. Sharper and faster than zooms for close to the same price. Either way, you want the top quality your most likely going to be spending thousands.

The whole portrait thing mid vs zoom is pretty much the same thing. longer lenses will compress the background which is cool, but I wouldn't say you get more bokeh than lets say a 50 1.4. The 50 won't compress the background as much, but with your zoom you won't be able to open up as much. It all depends on how much depth you have in the background.

And when you say lenses are usually sharpest around f5.6, your talking about faster lenses. just so people with kit lenses don't get the wrong idea, each lens has its own sweet spot but generally they are sharpest a couple stops down from wide open.

if your serious about photography, i'd suggest getting an actual SLR and consider it an investment for the future, youll keep the lenses when you upgrade bodies, but with that, you can't upgrade the body without loosing the lens, so instead of being one lens up, youll be one down.

thats probably a decent enough camera for what you want to do now, but in the future you might want more megapixels for printing for example and youll have to sell the whole thing instead of only having to sell the body and keeping a lens

If you shoot sports, then a 300mm is what you need. Just checking, cos no1 needs a fixed 300mm unless you shoot sports or you are a paparazi.

And to One Evil, don't bother with those glorified point and shoot fageras. Save a bit longer and buy a cheap SLR. You will notice the difference in speed and accuracy that you would have missed using that shite point and shoot.

The 11-16 tokina is DX, still fits my D700 but uses cropped mode, shooting it on full frame comes out like this:

http://jonvandalen.com/newblog/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/ned77_4691-1.jpg

Therefore no point when I've already got a 15-30mm which is far wider on an FX camera, only issue is it's not constant f/2.8 like the tokina is.

I'm not into anything that gets posted in the dubstep thread, to me it's not dubstep at all. I am into the croydon UK original dubstep sound, minimal, dark and still got soul, not the american thrash shit that is just smashing synths and distorted wobbles.

Stuff like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiIinm8RggY - this one so damn grimy, a stomper

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vluYfZZI248

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl-mBqAYNOc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fldGASUC6Ww - mala live set

but americans have been doing what they usually do to UK genres, adopting them and ruining them. haha.

There is this weird mystical mecca status that has been attached to croydon cos of dubstep, for me anyway. Can you go to that club DMZ please? Just cos I can't.

thanks guys. theres no special filter or lens to get a raw edge on a print.

i used a full frame negative carrier when i made the print which exposes a little part of the outside of the negative so when its put on the projector to print i get the entire shot and then a little bit of the outside.
If you like the guy in the barber shop shot you should see the amazing print i made. i wish i had a big enough scanner. :D

dont get me wrong but as portraits that will probably be put in a book for people to see those are awful. You dont take portraits that will be published of someone from a very far side angle let alone having them wearing sun glasses that take up his whole face so that no one knows who he is. Plus you have to much in the for ground which distracts the viewer from seeing the subject.

as for personal portraits for your art benefit they look pretty solid. but if you have enough time you might want to go back and retake these.

here is a good example of what a good senior portrait looks like from a good friend of mine.

its not straight. the right side is about 1/8 inch taller than the other side.
just measure from landmarks on either side and try to get them as close as you can.

they dont put prices on there site because it varies from what you want, to how many you want, to how many colors, to how many sizes. plus the type of shirt, hoodie, polo...etc etc etc.
If you give them a call and tell them exactly what you want im sure they would be more then happy to help you.
you can go ether on there website or here.
