Hey pal, I've posted many shots from my m6. granted they are a bit over exposed, it's tricky getting used to the spot meter and the zone system when I'm used to modern matrix meters in my digital cameras.

dont really plan on selling it, but it was a prisma silver marker, not too worried about it, nothing a little bit of denatured alchahol wont get rid of

this has alot of potential...the reflection off the water is butter, work with that shit

what ekipse said, clean your sensor

try to make your shots stand out more, gain a better perspective on your subjects to make them "pop"

idk if your using a point and shoot or a dslr but definetly turn your iso down and if you can, get a tripod...it'll do you just right

your into centering your subjects in the picture...stray away from that..the can of shitty montana, and the lava lamp are the same..use the rule of thirds

theres no real "art" going on in these photos...use your creative instinct to get shit moving...theres nothing creative about centering a can of spraypaint or a lava lamp

my 2 cents

I hate 'art' photography, it's so fucking cheesy. Pictures of night cityscapes, train tracks, spraycans, blades of grass, etc etc etc. It's been done a hundred zillion fucking times before. Photographs should be interesting and fresh, there should be a reason to be looking at it, if you are staring at a photograph wondering what you're looking at, or thinking, thats kinda pretty, but not making you think of anything else, then it's either for work or it's shit.

Sorry, but really guys, take some decent photos, take some risks. Enough of the night time scenery shots freight yards and spraycans.

theres nothing wrong with taking "that kind of photo" but make it your own and make it stand out from the rest

btw, giving an art aspect to his photos means doing something unique that actually takes skill

anyone can take a picture, but it takes a true artist and a true photographer to take a good photograph

hence why i said "theres nothing creative about centering a can of spraypaint or a lava lamp"

if you have a dslr, you should get an external flash that will fit in your hot shoe. Any good external, will have the ability to swivel/adjust where the flash points. if you point the flash upward or bounce the light off a wall behind you, you'll loose the hard shadows in your faces. investing/ making a diffuser will also soften the flash

funhouse - I'm hella digging that last picture, looks sick.
Actually, come to think of it, everything on this page is pretty good; digging those scans a lot.

I'm split between a D3000 and a Rebel XS. Both are the same price but I'm not quite sure what to get. (I was going to get a D40, but I can't find it in any stores.) Probably going to use it for regular street stuff and skateboarding shots.

Another question: I'm really new to DSLR's and I want to buy a circular polarizer filter for the lens, but I'm not sure how big of one to buy for either camera. How can I find out?

kmcdon3960
12-20-2009, 11:13 PM
funhouse: I think those would look nicer if you adjusted the whitebalance a bit, def. shifted to the pink/red

ak: that's $2100 usd, and absolutely ridicilous for airfare.
I just looked up philly to auckland flights and they're anywhere between $1200 - $2400. Unbelievable.

Might be cheaper to spend a few weeks on a boat?

Hi guiz, I'm gonna do something that seems obvious but I never realised it until now cos I'm a clown.

Since I got my D700 for a grand, I'm gonna flick it for thrice that and also sell my D300, and buy a D3.

Yay.

And, I just can't get enough of this cunt. I been doing a lot of street work lately since discovering 'hyper focal distance', I don't know how I did it before I knew about this. Its sad that techniques and photographic methods like this get forgotten about with the automation of digital SLRs. This leica has forced me to learn so much! I love it!

Just picked up a minolta srt101 for $10 at the goodwill, but the shutter doesn't work (of course)
Main reason I got it was because it's got a 28mm lens, I've been wanting a 28mm for a long time now. I might actually pay the $120 to get the camera fixed, just to be able to use the 28 :D

Also this is the first time ive ever shot something like this yesterday so any crit is welcome and will be helpful!! Being slightly drunk, and having a camera gets you anywhere...i chilled for the whole of high contrasts set in the dj booth haha!!

Using my Nikon d40x, 10-20mm sigma, and my velbon flash gun with a diffuser filter thing...mostly shot on 1/2 Second, f8 iso800 at 10mm...

Exactly. I don't see why people try and act all tough to the police. I mean you don't gotta be a complete sucker to them, but do exactly what they say and the only thing that should be coming out of your mouth is "No, sir" or "Yes, sir" 70 percent of the time. I was in situation with the police when I was caught in the act and I was looking at jail time, but I did exactly what I just said and I was off on my merry way within 30 minutes.

This all sounds like a great set up, you won't need anything (apart from the flash) for years.

Get a Neutral Density filter of around 8 (ND8) for your 50mm, find out it's filter size and buy one of those. It will allow you to shoot the 50 wide open during sunny days. Very useful, I use mine every day on my M6.

cheers ill look into it, got a feeling both the 18-55 and 50 have 52mm thread sizes so should be alright because I'm not shooting with the 50 much because of ghey manual focus

I know my canon xsi will sync up to 1/4000 sec, but it won't do it with a standard flash.
I'm sure nikon has the same system.

If you use the "high speed sync" canon flash, it flashes several times during the exposure so that it "beats the sync" even though your shutter is only fully open for 1/320 or so.

Of course, you can't use it on full power on high speed mode.

ekipse1

One thing that drives me bananas about canon, and every little girl that owns one and uses at night with the built in flash, the STUPID canon system of flashing a zillion times before taking the shot, not only is it FUCKING ANNOYING, but the subject doesn't know whwther a photo has even been taken.

That and, not to mention, 1/500th flash sync; or all the way up to 1/4000th if you block the TTL contacts! (1/3200th with Cybersyncs)

I would differentiate them as either professional cameras or amateur cameras. Or maybe one could call the cameras with internal focusing motors 'big' and the smaller cameras with no focusing motor (d40 d60 d3000 d5000) 'small'.
I dunno.

Right now I consider anything with a full frame sensor a 'professional' camera. But there is no lingo.

D5000 is probably the best small nikon out right now, that and the tried and true D40.

shooting film is expensive and can be frustratingly difficult at the start. having a nice digital SLR to shoot with is great, it provides a lot of room to try a lot of things out. get a D40 or a rebel and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. eventually you will learn how to make images come out better, but this comes through experience, not gear and shit you can buy.

ok so i decided i want to try some of this film shit out haha. whats a good, cheap camera to learn on? i have no idea how to develop or anything haha. or maybe i should just stick to digital and get to know my d40 inside and out.

anyone build their own studio lighting? gonna give it a go after xmas

Wait till you get your D40. Film is on another level entirely to digital. Get your head around Digital first.

Edit:

Yeah, what robbie said.

you can start out with a simple 35mm camera like a pentax k1000. its the stock of the stock when it comes to 35mm cameras and relatively easy to come by.the price isent to bad either, its really a solid 35mm camera for people who want to shoot film. i seem to be the only one who really bases in film on this board. its really all i shoot.
if anyone wants to know about medium or large format camera...feel free to ask! im a film major so im up to date on film photography more then digital. which i feel i should get into more. haha

I feel if you already shoot Nikon digitally then it makes sense to buy a Nikon film SLR, so that lenses can be interchanged.

I use this one:

It's great. Or try this:

Don't even need batteries.

you could but in the long run its better to get a decent one because once you buy one it will last you forever and you dont wanna be stuck with one that you can easily upgrade.

this is the one i use that is perfect and ive used it for a year now and it works like gold. a friend of mind has had the same one as well for over 3 years and his works like a charm to.

This is very true. i process, develop, print, cut, mat, and frame all of my own shit out of my own pocket.
film is one thing.
but you have to buy a shit load of other things that come with film. and if ur shooting B&W its even more expensive.

ill give some one a nickel and a pat on the back if they can tell me why shooting B&W film is more expensive then color.

Thats not necessarily true, the only other piece of equipment I have had to buy is a film scanner. I get my films developed for $8 a pop and scan them myself.

I find darkrooms, enlargers and developing films by hand tiresome and boring, but thats just me.

to me doing analog rather then digital feels much more personal because i put all that hard work into making the perfect image rather then on a computer.
i shot the film, processed it, cut it, developed and printed it. Doing all this makes me feel much more personal to my work.
If my image is shot wrong or its over exposed then its scrapped. i cant manipulate with a program to make it right. i can however "dodge", "burn". and "etch" my images to make them look better. but if i get that perfect shot i can print it as large as i want with out having to go to a store to get it done. i can do it my self. im not saying one it better then the other.because i know some digital photographers who just blow my mind. i prefer being hands on with my photography, makes it much more personal when someone buys my pieces. makes me give more gratitude.

which is why analog and digital are so different.

I feel you, but all I do with my film scans is basically a digital version of dodging and burning, bringing up the blacks and pushing back the washed out whites. While I enjoy manipulating my digital images to however I want them to look, I hardly touch my scanned negatives, other than a dodge or burn as I said before.

Correct. Thats why they produce the 35mm f/1.8, so that after the 1.5x crop factor it becomes around 52mm. If I were you I'd buy the 35mm.

Film speed is similar to camera ISO in your nikon. 100 is relatively ungrainy, whereas 3200 is extremely grainy, but it's nice grain, not shit 'noise' in your digi. 3200 can virtually see in the dark with a fast lens, whereas forget about using 100iso at night without a tripod.

Robbie P
12-24-2009, 02:22 AM
3200 is pretty rough for shooting color film. it just ends up looking like shit most of the time. the farthest i dare to go is 1600 for black and white and maybe push it a stop.

Yeah I bought a few rolls of 3200 BW and didn't like it too much, good for shooting at night but thats it.

This is what it looks like when you rate your 3200 at 6400. There's nothing like it when you can shoot f/2.8 at 1/60 with barely any light at all. I was told it looks like 'a 60's rolling stone picture'

I regularly shoot neopan 1600, but set the iso dial to 1000, then I leave it in the developer for a couple minutes less.

Gives different results then if you shoot/process it at 1600

It's called push/pull

push if you overrate, pull if you underrate

what's it like printing 8x10's with 1600 ISO film? i have grain issues printing 8x10's at even 400.

printing b&w is completely different then printing color.

printing color you have to be in 100% pitch black. it sucks.

Robbie P

don't you have to develop color prints for every primary color too? i've only printed black and white and that is relatively easy.

It's boxing day for me already, and tomorrow I'm off to Gisborne, the first city in the world to see the new year, to party at this place and get FUBAR and probably end up in a ditch or off a cliff or something.

So yeah, have fun everyone over New Years. And for fuck sake, stop going to hawaii and come to New Zealand for a real holiday.

-set it to M mode
-keep your iso as low as possible
-depending on how much movement in your pics you want youll keep a high or low f #, for long light trails for cars or lots of blurry moving objects and everything else crisp, set your aperature at around a f14 or so...varies depending on how much light is in your picture, and keep your shutter open for about 15 to 30 seconds...like i said, really depends on your suroundings, for everything else, keep your aperature as low as possible and keep your shutter open for about 3 seconds...this usually does it but youll have to play around with it, in most cases youll have enough city lighting to use what i said above. if theres very little light youll have to have your shutter open even longer, i would invest in a wireless shutter/remote release/cable release...youll need it

always keep in mind that if you have your aperature stopped down, street lights will give that star apearance, i would always try to keep the aperature as high as you can to eliminate this...thats just me though

you said you were getting a tripod, your gonna obviously need that

find one with a release on it so you can have the mount on the camera and never have to take it off...its really convinient so you can just slip the camera on and off the tripod

This isn't necessarily true, stopping down too far can cause Diffraction, which makes you lose sharpness. It works basically the same as squinting your eyes.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/diffraction.htm

I'd recommend shooting at the f stop where your particular lens is at it's sharpest, usually from f/5.6 to f/8.
