im so damn nervous about using these remote flashes tomorrow at this show
cant stop thinking about it, its almost 3 in the am, gotta leave for work in 3 hours
what a disaster, im gonna have 3 on stage and 1 in hand...should i direct one over the drummers shoulder, 2 left stage 1 directed to center and one off the ceiling and another on the right pointed directly up to get a full bounce off the ceiling?
if im gonna be bouncing flashes their gonna be set high enough to where it wouldnt be necisary for me to have a flash in hand...
or should i just do 1 behind the drummer at the ceiling to get nice lighting on him and 1 stage left and 1 stage right to get the gitarist and bassist?
FUCK!
really dont have time to fuck around with it, if my shit stands out to them, they tell a few other bands and right there i get mad exposure, i cant really dick around

Correct, keep your shutter speed at 250th (or whatever the flash sync in your camera is) and don't touch it. Keep your ISO at 100 or 400, depends on how dark the room is, keep your flashes on a low power setting so that they recycle quicker and save battery power, and adjust aperture to suit. Usually it's kept at around F/5.6 or so for a really dark environment, depends how much ambient light you want to get into the photographs.
Try set up a similar environment light wise so you can set your flashes up and prepare, then just repeat the settings once you get to the gig.
From the looks of your family portrait, your flashes are on far too high a power setting. Lower the power and close your aperture, to avoid skin tones being washed out and lost in white.
PS didn't notice your grandpops pulling that girls hair, what a funny cunt.

Wrong. The only thing you need to do now is take much more photos of things other than ciggies and cats, before you even think about buying more lenses. The lens that came with your D3000 is an amazing one, everyone is so quick to dismiss it just because it's a kit lens.
A lot of you fellas get your brand new cameras and immediately think you need to buy more equipment, before you have even taken 100 photos.
You need to have taken enough photos to really know why you need a new lens before you go out and buy one. Owning a camera for a week you should be learning your camera and lens through and through before even thinking about buying another lens.
I realise I own a lot of gear, and I blabber on about gear a lot in this forum, but thats because this is going to be my profession. For anyone else a DSLR and a kit lens is all that is EVER needed.

really depends on what you want to shoot with the 50. if portraits, then AF is just a luxury. once you get the hang of it, manual focus is quick and easy. just like anything else, it takes practice.

Vivitar 285HV.
It's an automatic flash, meaning you set the camera to a specific aperture and ISO, select the shutter speed, and the flash does the rest!
It does not TTL meter, it doesn't automatically zoom. It tilts but doesn't swivel. It's powerful as a motherfucker. I dropped mine on the concrete and it's fine.

you've got some gnarly harsh lighting on that can dude, try diffusing your light source or bouncing it somehow, point and shoots can yield great photos if you use em right, dslr's rock cause you can make the camera do exactly what you want

I'm looking on eBay, theres only the one there, from America
Also, is there much difference between the 285hv and the 285, I've found the latter for like less than a third of the 285hv price
Is this of any relevance?
UPDATE: Note: There have been some quality control issues with the Vivitar 285s since Vivitar was bought out by another company. I would consider the LumoPro LP120 as a better alternative.

this lens rocks for more abstract shit, as well as portraits
everyone needs to go get a 35mm/1.8 or better if ya got the cheese
i feel like the 50 mm would be zoomed in too much for me, the 35 works well for indoor shots, test it out by setting a 18-55mm at 35 then take some shots, try to take the same ones zoomed into 50 and a lot of times you find out there's not enough room to back up

i feel like the 50 mm would be zoomed in too much for me, the 35 works well for indoor shots, test it out by setting a 18-55mm at 35 then take some shots, try to take the same ones zoomed into 50 and a lot of times you find out there's not enough room to back up
I agree with this 100%. A 50mm is really nice but it's wayy too zoomed in. Especially for indoor photos. I've never used a 35mm but I would thinks it's better for portraits because you have more room to back up and you can get more of the person in the photo.
My brother tried to take a photo of his house with a 50mm and he had to go across the street into the neighbors driveway by his garage to just barely fit the house in the photo.

who knows what those really tall flash stands are called
their like a tripod on the bottom and they raise up real tall
i wanna buy something like that instead because tripods are really visable in live band shots...black poles that go high up to support flashes arent

when shooting portraits, I always found a real 35mm on a non-cropped sensor distorted a bit too much for my taste. It may have only been a bit, i can't really remember, but I remember getting kind of irked at that. 50mm on a film camera is always a great choice, always perfect, imo. I only use 2 lenses anymore; my 50mm and a 24mm for landscape and architecture photos.

if you're gonna use the lights and not block them with the fellas on either side, try and get them symmetrical, or make them waaaaay different, my brain tells me something's wrong when a composition is close to symmetrical but isn't
oh, and there's too much going on in the background, it's distracting

It is silly to shoot portraits close to your subject, when this happens distortion occurs in the face, the nose becomes too big etc. This is why you see pro photographers using long lenses in shoots. 50mm is designed as a lens that reflects what the eye sees. However on a cropped sensor camera like most of yours, it becomes around 75mm, which is ideal for portraits. Using a 75mm lens to shoot a house is just stupid anyway.
any idea what kind of manual camera this is;?

Nope, they are dope for off camera flashes that you can bang up and just replace later. Don't buy an SB-400. I've got one and I never use it. If you are looking for a decent on camera flash, and just an awesome all rounder, can't go wrong with the SB-600.

I know nothing about pentax'es, but if they are anything like Nikon, they usually have a model to suit every price bracket, just get one that suits your budget.

People are sayin lighting is a waste of money, I can't agree with that.
Natural light is great, don't get me wrong, but everyone should have at least one decent flash. And I'm not talkin about the popup flash that your camera has built in.

but you have to learn to work with natural light before you go and spend the $ on lighting equipment
if you dont know the fundementals, then you shouldnt be looking at advanced lighting
work with your on camera flash for a while and get to learn how to really use it before you move on...cant tell you how stupid that sounds wasting money on stuff your not ready for yet'
its like someone getting a ferarri for their first car...its jsut stupid because they dont even know how to drive yet

You own an SB-600 don't you? That is MORE than enough for now. I think you are underestimating the amount you will learn in the next few years. I didn't know squat about off camera lighting until I was shooting for at least 2 years.

Oh, I misunderstood you, I though you meant you were gonna ask someone to assist you! Just send heaps of photographers that you like an email saying how much you love their work and why, and that you have alot to learn from them, and you would love to come along to shoots with them and help them to get an insight in the world of professional photography. blah blah blah, basically tongue their balls but don't sound like a clown at the same time. Some are reallly friendly and are keen to help, others are arrogant pricks, I have worked with both kinds, unfortunately it usually happens that the pricks are more established.
Don't just email one and get dissapointed when they refuse you, send emails to tons of photographers. There are usually websites of photographic organisations in your city that will have a list of photographers and email addresses.

Bring your SB, shoot wide open, ISO 400, at half a second or a second depending on how dark it is, with your flash on auto. These settings should work sweet in a dark environment. Keep your aperture open and iso at 400, but play around with the shutter speed until it looks how you want.

Read your manual, focus on a point of light and move the camera afterward. These are things that you learn from shooting. Just go out and shoot.

thats what i do if i want to focus on something. hold the button halfway and then move the camera to get the composition i want. would that work in a live band setting?
trust me, if my hands didnt go numb in 2 min i would be out shooting all day haha. and when i get out of work, its dark anyways. and recently, the scene here has seemed to die down a bit for shows

And on another note, i finally finished my so called 'portfolio website'....its basic and simple as fuck, but it gets the job done, let me know what you all think :)
http://www.site-photography.co.uk/
The layout isn't bad, simplicity is where its at for portfolio websites. I'm not too huge on the logo, I think you could do something with a different font or something to make it really stand out from everything else. Simpleviewer isn't a bad for a gallery but there are similar galleries that are html and will load faster. Also I'm not sure why the image on the front page is flash but get rid of the flash takes too long to load. Other than that, link your logo to your main page, or add home in the navigation.

err, quite a few are construction sites, so theres not really any doors etc over the stair wells, usually just cctv and some on site security dudes, prob the same as over in the US....rooftops of hotels etc are piss easy, walk in talking on your phone, its proven that no one will bother you...get in the elevator go up as high as you can, look for the roof access door, hope you get lucky and its not locked etc, or just look for a diff way to access the roof...easy to do in hotels as usually its a fire exit as a door, sometimes they are alarmed though :)

yer the logo isnt really a logo to be fair, was just something quick and easy like the whole site :D Yer people keep mentioning the font, but 'times new roman' and 'arial' are just to plain and shit....somepoeple like the font...others hate it :D Its flash as its a simple, 5 image slideshow....does rotate ever 3-4 seconds or something....yer the logo to the home page was me being a twat and not putting it in :D
I don't dislike the font, but I think if you changed up the site part of it, it would pop more. I didn't realize it was a slideshow, first time I checked it out nothing loaded, and second time it was just one flick but now its working. One more thing, make sure you title your main page

how does this sound?
How's it going man?
I’ve admired your work for a while now, I pretty much just entered the world of photography about 6 months ago and I still have so much to learn
I’ve been slowly transitioning into doing portraits and band promos, and your band promos have always stood out to me, I’m not quite sure what you use, but your lighting always looks awesome!
Anyways, I was going to see if maybe I can come along to a few of your shoots to help out and get an insight in the world of professional photography
I think I can really learn a lot from you and it would be a great step for me in the profession I’m trying to pursue

i was like, wow...sounds awesome
we'll see where it goes, hopefully i get a shot at this...
to me it kinda seems like an all black photography agency though...all the clients are black and so is the founder of the joint, im down with that...but im thinking their probobly gonna be looking for a black photographer as well..let alone a photographer without holes in his ears
.A.K.4.7.

Sounds sweet for a band photographer, but for anyone else definitely sound a lot more professional than that.

this
depends how formal you want it to sound, saying things such as
"How's it going man?"
"lighting always looks awesome!"
and
"Anyways"
sounds more like your writing to a mate, for someone you don't know personally, I'd recommend writing formally.
Part from those few things, the rest sounds pretty good

great photo upstate...great tone.
i made this ball of clay into plugs! first pic i thought was pretty sweet, and the second is just me modeling them bahah. oh and some green my friend grew. ( the shadow on my face is from the fish eye attached to my 18-55, as far as i know there is no way to attach the lens directly onto the body. Does anyone know if there is an adapter?)
i got a TITANIUM fish eye with a second macro lens on it for Christmas, along with a 200mm Nikkor VR.

depends on if your camera will let you alter your shutter speed
you need atliest a 3 second exposure to effectively paint

depends on how quick you are and how dark the room is.
the heart and X one i did were both 15 seconds but the one i did with the faces everywhere were 30 seconds.

i did these with film, processed and developed them my self. along with the frame.
doing it with film is alitte trickier. you have to get it dead on.
