kinda sucks, had quite the collection of kicks and my apartment burned down, lost everything...if i didnt lose it to the fire i lost it to water dammage, the only thing salvages were my bloody sunday dunks, and some old adidas superstar mids and some misc. shit here and there

yeah man, it sucked real bad, my dog made it out ok and thank god everyone else in the complex made it out, but i left my apartment...went to my girls house, set my phone inside, went on a walk with her...came back and looked at my phone to see i had about 100 missed calls and texts...since my school was right across the street my friends were trying to call me
rushed over to my apartment to see my moms crying histerically and to find out my dog was still in there...fire department got my dog and everything...
we had renters insurance but that only covers so much...had to start from scratch, its definetly an experience living in a hotel for a week having to restart your wardrobe of clothes and everything from little neccesities to every day things at your home you take for granted overnight
another thing was canceling credit cards and changing personal records and such because when an entire complex burns down, they scrap everything left and put it in a giant dumpster...lots of personal info and identification shit that could be stolen
it was nuts
UpstateHate585
01-07-2010, 02:28 AM
damn that would suck. well on the good side, you werent sleeping in the apartment or anything and everyone was ok.
back to photography stuff haha, i just checked my bank account and have and extra 400 bux to spend on something. im thinking of either:
studio lighting package from ebay
making my own lighting/backdrops,
a lens (50mm or 35mm).
or random accessories like bag, new tripod, filters, sd cards
i really need some off camera flash, my sb-600 can't be made wireless from my d40 alone, whats something decently cheap that i could get something off camera?
ShIfTeD
01-07-2010, 02:39 AM
theres a world of cheap alternatives to off camera flashes via ebay
you should really get a good bag and some filters...thats the most realistic thing to get right now
either that or a decent wide angle lens or if you save some $$ you can get a really good wide angle telephoto
i got a 55-200 and a 17-50 im looking to get rid of, both come with an assortment of filters as well
UpstateHate585
01-07-2010, 03:09 AM
im not really looking for anything super wide yet. i want to get into portraits/promos. i think i should get my lighting up to par before looking into new glass. i don't see the need for a bag other than like planes. if im in the car, its on my lap or in the passenger seat, if im walking around, its around my neck.

Wireless slaves for your flash? Then your sb600 can be made wireless.
Just get some cheap ebay ones, there not pocket wizard reliable but if your shooting something that's not really required to be caught in the split second (ie bmxing, sports etc.) then just get some ebay ones for like $10 or however much they are stateside.
I've got a d40 and just bought a cheap flash that I'm pretty much gunna use solely for off camera flash. Should be here in a few days, getting into a bit of automotive photography I think.

my personal opinion on film is, it looks awesome and stuff, but i think its better to learn digital. that way, you don't waste money on film when you are still learning what makes a good photo. like composition and stuff like that.

Correct.
Been on holiday in Lake Taupo, which is actually a giant crater of one of the biggest volcanic explosions in the world ever. Check the size of the lake in my photos to get an idea of how big the crater really is, and how massive the explosion would have been when it erupted. It's still a thermal area, if you dig a hole in the sand you get hot hot water. Took some photos, mainly 35mm so they will come later. Been taking pretty average photos lately, dunno why.

To people that wonder why really long lenses are used for portrait work, this is why. Think of my leica as a persons face. When you shoot from far away, the face flattens, and it is much more flattering in a photograph: eg:
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/1793/img1464m.jpg
Now if you shoot close, with a reasonably wide lens, even a 50mm if you're too close, you get this:
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/446/img1465y.jpg
If that were someones face, their nose and features would be all outta wack. So kids, if you're into portraiture, buy a telephoto lens, and never shoot a portrait with a wide angle.

half a second, aperture wide open, 400 iso, if you have a low roof aim flash upward, but not straight upward. play around with shutter speed depending on how dark the room is.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it!
And I know what you mean Psys, that's why I like it so much. Simple, yet feels more. Idk haha
And Youthcrew, MCMB used to be one of my favourite bands, but it's actually a reference to the movie Snatch. It's where they got it too. I got really into them almost 4 or 5 years ago, and have a bunch of their old demos. Some crazy good shit in there, like the original Circle The Sky. One of my all time favourite songs. And I didn't shoot this one in film, actually. I think it was ISO 400 with a Canon 450d.
Lakim, I dig the first and the third. Maybe if you cropped some of the space around the person in the first, making him fill the frame, it could be a bit better, but that could just be me.

There was a complete sinar view camera system with 2 lenses/boards and all kinds of other shit for $600 on craigslist (obviously no digi sensor).Dude got hospitalized and couldn't use it anymore.
if I only had the money.... I would have bought that bitch, put it on ebay, and got a really nice camera that I'd actually use

this is how i roll, medium format ftw. I havn't developed anything however, so it might not be as good as i think x] Found this a week or so ago, and when i say found, i mean literally. Went to throw away some ice cream, and found it in the trash, sitting on top of some boxes. I don't know if it was an accident or what, but it works amazing, as far as i know.

Yeah. after handling med. format, it's pretty clear that 35mm just doesn't stack up..... but you can't pocket a bronica like you can a yashica
Also, after handling the super-takumar 50/1.4, it's pretty clear that the nikon series E 50/1.8 ain't got shit on the pentax.

UpstateHate585

How do u go about metering when u have flashes? Just look at ur LCD screen and adjust?I'm thinking about getting 2 flashes and a cheap remote. But my car broke down 2 nights ago. I hope an alternator isn't much lol. Should my sb600 get me some decent shots tho at shows for now? I like crisp shots and occasionally a blurry one but I'm afraid I might have to settle for the longer shutter speeds until I get more lighting.

get the canon xsi, these days they're cheap, and they work just fine.
Lens compatibility won't be an issue, because all ef lenses will autofocus on it, instead of the nikon silliness of having different autofocus systems. But don't worry, because you can put nikon, contax, pentax, ziess, ricoh, yashica, or olympus lenses on a canon slr and it'll work just fine, all you need is the $10 adapter. Can't do that with the nikon.

Trouble with that logic is, you can only buy canon lenses since the 1980's since the EOS system was developped, so the price of the lenses is more.

I ask everyone this when they ask about buying a camera, so please dont think im attacking you.
Do you know what aperture is and how it effects your light and depth of field?
Do you know what ISO is and what it does?
while having a camera in your hand and learning with it helps alot, i think those 2 things are the most important to learn before you even buy a camera. i cant tell you how many people buy expensive gear then keep it on green box mode all the time. might aswell have a point & shoot in that case.

jacking cameras is on some bitch made shit, little children or not. it's the same as someone stealing your bands van and jacking all their gear.

isnt aperture when you change the opening to let in how much light you want?
and yeah the smaller the aperture the sharper both background and the foreground is, and making it bigger focuses more on the foreground right?
n iso is like the sensitivity with light ?
at least i think it is iuno i was readin a book about photography and saw all those words so i decided to look em up a few weeks ago:p

yup basically, but you need to know how each one effects the other. say you want some nice bokeh in the background, but there isnt enough light to shoot with that low of an aperture.
would you raise your iso to compensate? or would you lower your shutter speed? what are the benefits of doing each? Raising your ISO might give you some noise, while lowering your shutter speed might give you some camera shake and cause blur. its good to know when, how, and why to use certain things in different situations :)

The book "understanding exposure" is awesome if you are learning about how each thing plays along with the other. That and Ken Rockwell will literally leave you with no questions about photography.
I was about to buy some lighting but then my car and computer break. Fuck my life.
