Black screen, and underexpose so that the background is black, use lighting to bring out your subject, or shoot at night.

depends. are you using an off camera flash? ambient light?
with a flash, under expose the background and fill your subject with a light. To get a black background with this method, the subject needs to be at least 4 times as far away from the background than the light is to the subject.
So it would be like this:
Light (1 foot) Subject (4 feet) Background.
With ambient light, you need to use some kind of black background material, and you most likely will still have to touch things up with photoshop

jesus! ive been gone for not even a day and im behind 2 pages haha.
i drove down to staten island today to see my friends in the band the wonder years and took some shots i will post them tomorrow.
ok so heres the catch up
shifted- i use a canon ya jerk!
nice pick up on all the film stuff. you can do alot of damage with that little rangefinder camera. it pics up some nice colors if you use the right film.
AK- you still suck cause i want that leica so fucking bad haha.
and that little leica rangefinder camera is a ticking bomb if someone knows how to use it right. i would kill for one. the shots that come out of it are out of this world if you know how to use it right.

got a question because someone mentioned this... if the D3000 is hated on (inferior quality)... and you're in between the notion of getting a D5000 (damn swivel screen) and a much more expensive D90.
What are you choosing and why...?

Bredrin, D3000 is shit cos it sacrifices megagazels for ISO qual, D5000 has all good ISO qual and D90 has even better, if you got the scrill get the D90.

Reason for hating canon: needlessly complicated, Nikon does it smart, A for aperture priority, S for shutter priority. WHAT THE FUCK DOES AV AND TV STAND FOR IN THE CANON SYSTEM. you have to search through endless menus to change even the ISO on a canon, on a nikon there is a dedicated button. When you hold any canon apart from a 1d it feels cheap, any nikon above a D90 feels like a Patton Tank. Real talk.

My iso button is right next to my shutter button. I don't have to take my eye out of the viewfinder to change it.
Idk about you, but I think the menus are pretty simple.
I'll stop though, there's no point in perpetuating the nikon vs canon battle, nobody is ever going to win. It's like debating honda vs nissan, it doesn't matter because they're both good.

With all this talk about ISO, I'm beginning to wonder what my ds0 can handle without looking like shit. I would test it myself, but I don't have a computer at the moment.
I'm trying to figure out how to set my camera up for a show tonight. I'm gonna shoot wide open and probably change the shutter speed a few times. I'm thinkin ISO at 400 possibly. Idk what 800 looks like lol. But I want some pics to not have blur. My flash should help freeze shit right?

Meant d40. Fucking phone
Canons are slightly more complicated than nikons but I think your taking it a bit far. Every canon Ive used has an iso button either on the back or up top, and as far as the av tv thing goes does it really matter what they stand for? Even if you didn't know whats up some common sense could easily figure it out. And for the record Ive always thought it was aperture and time value which may not be as simple as A or S but it makes sense.

flash WILL freeze it, crank your shutter speed as fast as it'll let you with flash on, a d40 does 1/500 i think, another reason the d40 rocks over a d3000, i wish my folks had asked me what camera i wanted instead of letting the sales person tell them which one to get

Yeah haha I love this camera. I have somuch to learn from it. Will bouncing the flash be enough to freeze them. I don't want to point it right at them. Imgonna set my flash to 1/16 or 1/8 not too sure tho. I think tonight will teach me a lottt of stuff haha

you won't be bouncing a flash at 1/16 or 1/8 for a show.
Just go find a garage or something and practice your lighting before the show, or, just use the show as practice.
Are you going to use it on the hotshoe or off camera? if hotshoe, just set that bitch to auto.
That's another reason to get the 285 or a similar unit, photosensor on the flash unit means auto mode works off camera.

I wouldn't go above ISO1600 with your D40.

I know, I was drunk and talking shit. Just hate their single click wheel for changing both aperture and shutter speed, or I heard you change aperture by spinning the back wheel next to the screen? WTF? Just seems like comparing the design of a mac to a PC, mac shit just makes sense and so does nikon shit.

I know what they do, but calling them TV is and AV is what I was laughing about. I suppose it's cos Nikon already copywrited using A and S which make much more sense. Why are people so staunch about using M constantly? I dunno about you but I shoot too fast to have to worry about setting correct exposure every single time.

It's pretty silly, I think, to stay on manual 100% of the time. AV and TV are extremely useful modes, say you want to shoot a moving bird, you'd use tv. You're shooting portriats and you want them to all be f/2.8? av.
Manual mode is for night shots, off camera flash, and getting the camera to do stuff that it won't do in a program mode.
@ak: my xsi has auto-iso, but it's not the same as nikons. Mine will automatically select from 100-200-400-800, I think the nikon will go in between.

another nikon body that you will get on ebay used for cheap.
You gotta get the guerilla grip, I go in the mosh pits with camera and flash gilden-style, and shoot from a foot away. I've been knocked over a few times. You gotta never let go, and know how to fall. Never try to catch yourself when you fall, just hug the camera and try to fall on your back.

I think both canon and nikon have stepless shutter and aperture when in a program mode.
im sorry but you completely misinformed lol.
if you want to shoot a portrait in 2.8...which i dont know why anyone would cause it would put the eyes in focus and the nose would have bokeh on it...you would put the camera into manual, set the aperture at 2.8, set your shutter speed to whatever will freeze the motion, while providing enough light to expose the subject.
maybe you just use AV mode because you dont know how to adjust properly in manual, but i guarantee once you learn, youll have a better quality picture 100% of the time, because you have full control instead of just partial.
Also, magazines and newspapers wont accept a photo that wasnt shot in manual. Editors are fucking picky when it comes to that. all the metadata needs to be attached and the photo has to be raw and untouched. If you plan on keeping your photography a hobby, then do whatever you please. myself, i cant see calling someone a photographer when all theyre doing is framing and pressing a button. Learn how to shoot in manual, trust me.

Obviously you haven't been reading this thread for a very long time, because if you had, you'd know that I shoot film on manual cameras that don't even have meters. That's okay though, I can't expect everyone to do their research.

I dissagree with virtually everything you just said. :p
Having eyes in focus makes a portrait in my opinion. What you said is mostly opinion not fact. I struggle to see how shooting manually at f/2.8 is any different to shooting 2.8 in aperture priority mode. Perhaps to let in more light with a slower shutter speed, but otherwise, the depth of field stays the same. I feel like some cat think they are elite cos they only shoot manual, it's stupid.
"lso, magazines and newspapers wont accept a photo that wasnt shot in manual."
Seriously, this is just wrong.
You're talking like we don't know how to take photographs, stop it right now and give us more respect than that !

of course having the eyes in focus makes a portrait, but shooting at 2.8 would put the nose OOF, which will kill the portrait..unless thats the look your going for.
my point was, learn how to use the camera to its full potential, or you might as well be shooting with a P&S. most P&S cameras have aperture modes on them.
Edit: and you cant use strobes unless your in manual mode, so if you plan on using strobes anytime soon, might wanna start learning that "M" mode now..

http://ezinearticles.com/?How-to-Submit-Digital-Pictures-for-Magazine-Publication&id=167880
It’s only just recently that magazines have decided to accept digital images this is due to the image quality of early digital camera were not man enough for the job i.e. did not produce images with enough resolution and level of detail to reproduce well in magazines. Most Picture Editors on magazines prefer either slides or prints as this is mainly at present habit but is currently changing due to more professional photographers using digital cameras.

haha yeah ill argue the point of shooting manual all day. Reason being is most people buy a top of the line camera then turn it to green box mode and call themselves photographers, taking pics of piles of wood, rocks, rusty bolts...you get my point..
i just try to preach manual mode to cut down on all that nonsense

crits por favor?
when i shoot action sports, or something fast paced, then maybe ill go into aperture mode
Really? Anything fast paced is one of the few times I leave manual but I switch to shutter priority not aperture priority. The only time I use aperture priority is when I need to keep a consistent dof for a set.
With a few situational exceptions manual is whats up. There is no need to act like a dick because you know how to use your camera, but in my books if your letting your camera do the thinking you aren't a photographer.
Ak the window shot is dope. You should try and recover those highlights though, they distract from the subject. And there's something about your last headshot that I'm feeling.
Talking about cliches a couple pages back, well the most annoying one for me is mirrored self portraits with the camera on the face. #1 in my books.

I was messing with my camera and love 28 haha. But. Thnk for portraits its a little too wide. I read that 35 on a cropped sensor is more accurate in terms of replicating the human eye. But I could be wrong.
I've narrowed it down to the 35mm or the 28mm. The 35 is faster and more suitable for shows and portaits I think. The 28 would be nice for shows. I will prolly end up getting a few in the future. But gotta think what I will use more. 50 is too zoomed in for my taste. I'm thinkin the 35 then something wider.

Yeah, don't listen to me half the time, I'm a gear nerd and its not good at all, makes me forget that cameras are for taking photos not for anything else.
Red lines help your camera focus, without them its too dark for your camera to focus. Only reason I can imagine for people putting tape on their focus assist beams is cos they have another seperate one on their rig somewhere.

there's a lot of diversity in this thread. i wouldn't be surprised if some guy decided to post pictures of his pets or family photos
shine the meaning of photography through a prism and you get a plethora of possibilities for an answer...

you're taking a picture of some fucking bricks and steel posts.
when you look(or feel) a females bare body, what do you think? what do you see? to think there have been (and still are) people on this earth who could see something in the human anatomy(look at ancient greeks), so much that they decided to build sculptures of them & paint paintings of people standing around with their shit hanging out seems crazy ridiculous but so is cup stacking being a legitimate sport...

I sometimes tape the af assist beam on my camera when I'm not using flash, because I don't necessarily want people to notice that I'm about to take a picture. It definetly makes it focus slower though.

light some steel wool on fire while its tied to a wire or a string and spin it around. course steel wool doesn't lite on fire and light burns too fast, so medium is your best bet also with shoe laces they burn through so your best off with a wire.

or try straightening out the hook on a coat hanger in putting the end into a cordless drill, the put the steel wool on both sides of the coat hanger, light and let it spin.

ive had someone ask me why i took a pic of the back of a van.. my answer was fucking red light haha

01-18-2010, 03:58 PM
That pic looks pretty nice, I just kinda wish it was some old muscle car rather then a caravan. I think it would look better if the 3rd brake light was lined up with the clock tower and the van was fully in frame.
How did you get it to look like that, it's digital, right?
One Evil
01-18-2010, 04:03 PM
yea i hear ya.. the whole van is kinda outta place for sure.. the reason the van aint in full frame is cause the fuckin bastard cut me off then slams on the break to get the red light...and for how it looks. i used photoscape and enhanced the colours and changed it to black n white and yeah its a digital camera ... Herbalizer- I can't tell if you're one of the many new pricks here or not. I like shifteds last shot but how can I learn from that? Nobody jumped like a damn ape at the show I was at. All the others that he posted, I'm not a huge fan of. But I have seen a lot of stuff he does that I like a lot. Plus I was at a show with a lot of stage lighting he wasn't, he uses off camera flash, I haven't got any yet.
And I like the one of the dudes spitting water haha.

what he said. it's lacking in depth & is out of focus a bit but you can easily fix that if you use photoshop or other image editing programs
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/5753/90083589.jpg
i played with the contrast, brightness, sharpened the photo, and added a bit of depth(let me know if you want the psd file). though the depressing atmosphere from the original isn't as strong, the cold war period still comes to mind when i look at this
i like how the mountains blend into the sky. if only heavy cloud formations were present when you shot this, it would have filled up that bit of white space nicely
yeah it is a bit dull, but i didnt even mean to upload it,

@ herbalizer, thanks alot, i acctualy really like the shot now, n id love the phd file. the way the mountains faded into the sky is because it wass really foggy, i was aiming for that, the fogs also the reason there was no clouds. but w.e i have a million shots from that balcony aha.

So I realized a switch by the viewfinder. What the hell does that do? Lol. And also, why does my aperature only goes wide when I'm zoomed out all the way?
Because your lens is a f/4.5-5.6 lens. It opens wider when it's most zoomed out. This is why 70-200 f/2.8's are so expensive and huge, they stay at f/2.8 throughout the zoomage.
Switch next to your viewfinder adjusts the viewfinder if you wear glasses, don't touch it.
