how do you do the light blur thing?

reduce the shutter speed.
for example,
fast shutter speeds are like 1/4000 of a second or 1/6000 (even faster),
however,
by slowing down your shutter speed,
you bring it down to say 5, 10, 15, 20 seconds etc,
the slower your shutter speed,
the longer the shutter stays open,
that is,
the longer the shutter takes to snap,
and in all that time it takes to snap,
it will absorb all the light and the movements associated with the light,
what you get as a result is the motion picture of the light moving around.
although you must keep in mind that when you are doing this operation,
be advised to either use a tripod or keep the camera on a still plane free of movement,
because if the camera moves,
not only will the picture look out of order,
but it will ENTIRELY blur the scene.
also,
when you are shooting with a DIGITAL SLR (DSLR),
this mode is usually labelled as "TV" (Time Value) as opposed to "AV" (Aperture Value),
so when you use a DSLR,
make sure you change the shooting mode to "TV" and reduce your aperture to as low as possible,
the lower the aperture,
the higher intake of light (since aperture works inversely to the F-Numbers on the camera),
a lower aperture lets in large amounts of light and a higher aperture lets in lower amounts of light.
and finally,
set the ISO speed on your DSLR to say around 1600 or even better to 3200,
and then watch the magic unfold,

no when i was photo class we had to use film cameras, just set your shutter speed super low in a low light setting

Thanks, I use a Canon S3 IS. It's a camera that lays right below the expensive DSLRs, so you could probably say that it is one of the best of the worst lol. It is a nice camera for $300. I enjoy the appearance that you can get from post processing, however I'm not very experienced in using it (mainly because this computer sucks so much that it's not even worth it :mad:). I'm getting my own laptop soon, so I'll be playing around with it much more in the future.

if you would like a good wide angle lens,
i'd say go for a 10-20 mm lens,
very good and i can teach you some tricks on how to obtain a slight fisheye effect without requiring an actual fisheye lens.
anything less that 10 mm is considered as a fisheye because then the focal point starts wrapping around and gives it the distinct fisheye look - it's a good lens to experiment and have fun with, but not something you really want to take amazing shots with, unless they spontaneously turn out well.

a photograph is never complete unless it has been PP,

post processing doesn't really complete photographs, it just changes them. i'm not too keen on it but it requires a lot of talent and hard work and those that are good at it deserve alot of praise for how good they can do it.

well post processing completes photos in the sense that you:
touch up,
sharpen,
fix the colors,
exposures.

for example,
if you ever went to a photo studio to get your passport size photos done,
they wont just snap 1 shot of you,
they snap atleast 5 to 10 shots,
then they choose about 3 from those shots,
play with them,
fix everything,
and then hand you the final work,
what i meant by "completing" and "post processing" was not the ability to morph or transform a picture,
but rather the advantage of fixing exposures and contrast controls and sharpness,
crisp = sharpness,
but in my case,
i don't just sharpen,
as you may have already noticed right?
after all,
if i'm going to display my work to the world,
i may as well "fix" it and "complete" it rather than displaying a half baked photograph,
seen?

Run - What camera do you have? Canon what? Because if you have what I think you have (Canon 1Ds or 1D), then you should be taking a lot of better pictures man. I don't know, I might be wrong but they weren't that interesting really. And there's tooooooo much editing going on there, just telling you.

Robbie - I like what I see (first three). I gotta give you mad respect for employing the use of film slr to capture those trippy old movie kinda scenes. But you gotta story behind your shots or they totally unconventional? Because they alright and shit but if you gonna use up film, and since it costs to develop and shit, you might wanna look into taking more purposeful shots rather than random stuff. My 2 cents. And you got a Nikon I see?

film is cheap for me dude. i don't have a thousand dollars to buy a digital camera and another 2 thousand for lenses and strobes and shit, i'm just borrowing it for the week. i found a huge cache of film just sitting at this garage sale for about 120 bucks. probably 200 rolls of film, about 95 percent of that being decent Fuji and like 8 rolls of expired slide kodachrome that i sold to some dude who is a legitimately good photographer. my friend works in a lab and will develop a roll or two a week for me for free so developing is covered and essentially free.

Zoom isn't cool at all.

What you need is a 10-20 mm wide zoom.

Trust me, zoom is bullshit. Wide angle is the way to go.

Edit - By the way, if you tell me specifically what you need to zoom for, then I might be able to tell something better. Let me know.

You don't need zoom for that at all.
You do realize that if you're at concerts, it's usually dark and to shoot well you gotta use a flash and sometimes (if you're really skilled) shoot in Manual mode.
By using a zoom lens, I'm assuming you're standing far from the action and want to capture all that shit, but point is, when you use a zoom, the flash wont even reach the action, therefore rendering your zoom useless because your pictures wont turn out as bright or as good as you intended for them to turn out.

Solution = get a media pass to go backstage or right next to the artist.
How? = build a portfolio so that you have something to prove your skill, they don't let people in unless they got something to offer. Otherwise you're just one of those people in crowd below the stage who wanna jump on the bandwagon and take pictures with their cell phone and point and shoot cameras, only difference - you got a dslr.

just bought a d80 off my mate. 600 for the body and 100 for the two kit lenses. lenses are 18-55 f3.5 and 55-200 f4.5, pretty bad but crazy cheap.

It has been hard time for me shooting with my camera. Looking at the pictures here I do get a fair indication that I need a change of instrument but am limited as far as my budget goes. Getting to see fabulous photos such as these with acute precision makes me feel down in one way but gives me pleasure on the other hand too, provided I had that N-55 35MM SLR with me my story would have been different.

yeah, cant help a little self promotion.
wasn't really looking for crits on the piece though, just on the picture.
I know the sky burned too much, but the white fill of the piece matches nicely.
Just liking the similar blues, tans, and rust/brick browns.
