Look for a 70-200 telephoto.

f4 is fine for daytime
f2.8 will be nicer, but more expensive
VR is a good idea.

I have a 70-200 F/4L non-IS and it's fine as long as it's nice and sunny. Once it starts getting dark it's worthless though.

don't get me wrong upstate, I like the pictures, but people always look different when they know they're about to have their picture taken.

Depending on what style you're going for, telephoto may or may not be what you're looking for. When I look at street shots with a telephoto, it usually looks kinda.... distant.... to me I guess. It's all a matter of opinion though.

I feel you. I like the way things look when they are caught in the moment. But for some reason, I feel like the camera might take too long and the will notice and move away. Bruce gilden is not the end all be all of street photography... posting the same shit over and over again is lame, almost as lame as running up on someone with a flash in their face.

Just because you have someones permission to take their photo doesn't mean it has to look contrived. You can't just ask someone if you can take their picture and expect them to figure out exactly what or how you want them. Part of being a photographer and working with models or people is being able to communicate what you envision on a level your subject can understand and feel comfortable with.

Forgot to mention that last night I got kicked from the mall here. They said photography is prohibited. Wouldn't even let me walk around with the lens cap on. I bet if I had a point and shoot they wouldn't have said anything. His reason was I might get some store fronts in the shits. Unfortunately, there's not too much you can do about that, because the mall is gonna be private property. It sucks, but whatcha gonna do.

There's alot of good sites about photographers rights, you should research them if you're gonna be shooting in public alot.

Just do one book of what you think is your best shit, or what people always comment on, and the most popular photos...also do A4 prints, dont get loads of little 6x4's done....get full on full page sized prints, they look 1021941389470203784 times better....especially for the people/person viewing them...

No I don't shoot in raw. People say its only good for pp and really important stuff. I shoot too much and would fill up a card in like 10 min. I thought about it though. I am gonna go to kinkos or copymax soon and do some test prints.

I got the job at best buy. Its a new store so hopefully I can move up quick. I have to wait 30 days for the discount though. I'm gonna buy my 35mm as soon as I can get the discount haha.

word !!!!!!! words of wisdom right here. taking a photo of something interesting is just step one. listen to ken rockwell in his great but badly named F A R T concept!!

F: Feel

A good photo starts when you get the feeling to take a picture. You're walking around, and come across something that seems worthy of a photo.

Bad photographers just take a picture at this point.

Maybe they get something, but often they don't, because they haven't identified what it is exactly that caught their eye. These images expect the viewer to figure it out, and guess what: viewers won't bother. They just move on to the next shot.

It's never a subject, like "a Ferrari." What catches our mind's eye and leads to a great photo is always something more abstract. What attracts us to Ferraris as photo subjects is their bold, solid, primary colors and their brilliantly pure styling.



A: Ask

Once you've got a hankering to stop and take a picture, stop and ask yourself exactly what it is that made you stop.

Is it a bold color? Is it a crazy juxtaposition? Is it the wild light? What is it, exactly, that made you want to take a picture?

Is it the brilliant Italian design, lines, motion and proportion of the Ferrari? If so, what exactly about the design caught your eye?



R: Refine

Now that you have hopefully gotten some sort of clue as to what it is that attracted your eye, the hard part is to refine the image to emphasize whatever it is.

If we can emphasize whatever it was that stopped us, the photo will be far more likely to stop others and make them say WOW!

In other words, if we liked something, was it because it had a weird texture? If so, be sure to show that texture as boldly as you can.

If you like the color of something, don't be a wimp: fill the whole frame with it.

If there is an interesting relationship between two things, be sure to do everything you can to make sure that that is what takes over the photo.

Get rid of everything that isn't directly related to whatever it is that made you want to take the photo.

Compose as strongly as you can. Eliminate everything that isn't directly related to the point of the photograph.

In the case of a Ferrari, if you don't FART before snapping, you're likely to make another boring photo of the whole car from eye level.

If you FART first, you'll ask yourself what is it about the Ferrari that catches your eye, and when you can Answer that, maybe wind up with a close-up of those big round Hella tail lights, or maybe realize that it was the redhead driving it, and instead, head out to lunch with her and save the photo shoot for later.

It's never about the obvious subject. It's always something more basic and subconscious that draws us to want to make a picture of something.

You always can refine more and more, and as you do, your photos become stronger. If it was the redhead that caught your eye, what exactly about her caught your eye? If it was her hair, what exactly about her hair grabbed you?

The better you can Answer and keep Refining this, the more your photos will grab people, be they you, your friends and family, contest judges or photo and art buyers.

This is the easy part. Take the picture.

Be sure the exposure and color (WB) are OK, and you're done.

printing, processing, and developing in a darkroom is all i do. digital is not my game. film is. i spend hours on end in the darkrooms and coming home smelling like chemicals just means i put my work in. i process, print, and develop all my own shit and i wouldent have it any other way. much more satisfying.

Just a quick photo from me...but literally we have attempted to explore and get to the top of this new building and each time it has failed...they have 360 dome cameras, with motion sensors, plus alarms, that sound when movment is detected, some mean ass security guards, and locked/alarmed door to the stairs....but anyway 6 months on we finally busted mad shit and managed to get to the top....i only got one decent photo I actually like...here is that mad shit!

Don't bother with digital rangefinders unless you can fork out the $7000 for an M9.

Look into voigtlander R's, or don't bother at all. You're D40 is fine.

Get this if you're into street shit.

Just a quick photo from me...but literally we have attempted to explore and get to the top of this new building and each time it has failed...they have 360 dome cameras, with motion sensors, plus alarms, that sound when movment is detected, some mean ass security guards, and locked/alarmed door to the stairs....but anyway 6 months on we finally busted mad shit and managed to get to the top....i only got one decent photo I actually like...here is that mad shit!

I like street stuff a lot and would love to get into it more. But I think I should spend my money on other stuff. Rangefinders are sick but I think my d40 will be fine for street stuff. It's just that I stick out like a sore thumb haha

AK I got the same cheap triggers you got, and mine stopped working too.

They're so cheap because they just send a simple on/off pulse, pocketwizards have to digitally encode all the TTL data from the 5 flash contacts and send it all at once. I'm pretty sure they have a much longer range too.

I'm still just going to keep buying the cheapies though.

search for the yongnuo triggers, better then ebay ones and mine havent misfired once.

Yongnuo CTR-301P, alot better then cactus one's and not that expensive

It was made with ProPhoto3. Lets you customize everything so I made that myself. You can do ANYTHING with it but I like this clean simple look
