Homies of the photo thread... Can someone help me out? I purchased a Canon 7d on Dec 27th 2009 and after using my fathers 5d Mark II, I decided I want that instead. Now I am 1 week too late to return it to B & H. I listed it on craigslist and Ebay but do you fellow photo nerds know any other place I could find a serious buyer for my brand new 7d that I might now be stuck with? And no not the for sale section in bombing science.

I don't understand the point of the 7D, it's not even full frame? I thought you got a 5D? Sell it ebay?

Yeah I have a 5d Mark II but it's my fathers. The problem is we end up having gigs on the same days so I need my own. The 7d is awesome but after using the mark II its such a downgrade. I listed it on ebay I guess ill see how that goes.

Another issue for me is I'm addicted to the L series lenses and using them on the full frame 5d is great, then seeing them on the 7d makes me feel like I wasted money because I'm not using them at their full potential. I fucked up man.

what kind of camera is it again?

if its a regular 35mm camera then you should have it locked in one end (most likely the right side if im correct and pull it across the track along the back and feed it into a little slot thats on the right spindle. take acouple shots to make sure its in there right.
ex. snap the picture with the back open and wind it 2 or 3 times. exposing 1 or 2 shots it better then losing the entire roll. once you can see that its snapping and feeding to the left side you can close the back and keep shooting shots and winding until it goes from S to 1 and then you should be at shot one.

I have a trick if you wanna rewind ur film half way through a roll as well if you would like to know.
:D

that is all class.
next week we will cover how to load a TLR.
:D

youthcrewdoof
01-25-2010, 08:28 PM
you can tell when the film is done because you wont be able to wind the crank back anymore to snap a picture. when that happens just press the button at the bottom and rewind it all the way.

If you are taking like over 30 shots on a 24 shot roll then you probably loaded the film wrong haha

*film is light sensitive. ANY kinda of light will expose the film. no matter what kind of film or light if it hits the smallest part of light with out being processed first ur shots are gone.

UpstateHate585
01-25-2010, 08:42 PM
Gotcha. I think its fine. The exposure counters working now. And I can't wind it up so it must be caught and in there right. I got a cheap roll of film for it. 400 speed b+w. Hopefully it comes out alright. Idk how good the seals are on the camera haha. Guess I will find out lol

buy cheep film once you get a feel for it explore EVERYTHING. buy new films and try weird things. ive been at the film game for like 5 years now and there still so much i have yet to try. i just bought some infer red film that im super stoked to shoot and see how it comes out. buy every different kinda of film you can and just shoot things that catch ur eye. dont worry about if it makes sense. because thats how you will find out what you like shooting and what you dont like shooting. might i suggest staying away from anything that has to do with graffiti haha

other wise.

So I just found my dads old film camera. It's been sitting in this shelf for like probably 7 years. Long ass time. This thing on the back shows the date and it was actually correct. I took two photos with it but I don't know if there was others on there. The scroll thing at the top says 1 but i dunno what that means.

I think it's a canon sure shot? Not an SLR. Here's Pics....

DO NOT TRY CLEAN IT YOURSELF.

Take it into a shop to get cleaned. Only way to clean yourself is if you buy a blower, never ever touch the sensor or blow into it with your mouth, far too much moisture and spit.

anybody that wants to start off in real film photography might i suggest getting a pentax K1000, its the best thing for some one who wanted to start off in regular 35mm film shooting and decent price. so if you want to get into film photography the pentax k1000 is a good place to start. then you can look into more cameras as time goes on such as rangefinder camera and TLRs

so i got my film developed today went to pick it up and the shit was blank haha. nothing on the film at all. i must have loaded it wrong. when i checked the camera, i notice only the thing in front of the lens moves when i crank it. the spools on the right dont. could be that the camera doesnt wind film? it told me when the film was up though im confused

When you're advancing the film, you should see the rewind lever spinning also.

In the meantime, open the camera back, snap a couple shots, and make sure the shutter is working. Try it at a few different speeds to make sure it's not stuck on the same setting.

what do you mean by the thing in front of the lens? pics?

yeah dead film advance.

Here's a quick checklist for when you go back to the thrift store later this afternoon.
1: shutter
2: advance
3: does aperture close during exposure?
4: do aperture blades have oil on them?
5: does meter work?
6: self timer.
I've had alot of film cameras work fine, until you move the selftimer switch, then they never work again for some reason

1-seems to work
2-fuck
3-dont know what that means
4-cant tell?
5-yes
6-works fine

any way to fix it?
edit- what the fuck. i was just messing with it and it decided to work haha.odd. but the film i got developed had nothing on it. should i assume there are no light leaks then? wouldnt it be white?

http://falklumo.smugmug.com/photos/580007430_HLVAt-L-2.jpg

those things inside the lens that make a circle are the aperture blades. If they have oil on them they won't close in time for a quick exposure, and might cause some fogging on the inside of the lens.

Usually on older slr's you can take the lens off and rotate the aperture ring to inspect them.

idk what that line is, you need to look closely at the negatives to see if they have a scratch where that line is. If so, it's probably your camera, but if the negatives are not scratched, it could be the lab's equipment. Try to set your black/white/grey points in the scans to get rid of that magenta cast.

this is my site. (http://rapidhate.org)

UpstateHate585
01-26-2010, 09:59 PM
i dont know how to do that. the negatives dont appear to have the line. so it must be the lab.

kmcdon3960
01-26-2010, 10:00 PM
if you got a magnifying glass or something like that it'll help, or just hold it up to the light. If it's your camera, the line will be continuous down the whole strip

actually if you're just scanning the prints, you can just desaturate the image and then use you're brightness/contrast. It looks like you're scanning these as color.
Looks like you did pretty good with the whole manual focus/exposure thing.

just started my B&W photo class, and the first roll of negatives i developed all ended up having a strip that is brighter than the rest of the photo on the bottom. The strip is continuous and even throughout the whole roll. Any ideas as to what it might be/a way to fix it?

i think it should have been shot horizontally. the way the building gets cut off bothers me. and why did u flip it?

lakim shabazz
01-28-2010, 02:08 PM
why not flip it? but on the real
i felt like it and i hate shooting landscape looks boring as fuck to me

UpstateHate585
01-28-2010, 02:23 PM
no hate haha. i was just wondering if there was a reason you flipped it lol. i just think if the building was in the frame all the way, it would look more complete i guess. to each his own.

so i am pricing out prints an people said to get a4 prints done for my portfolio. all my pictures get cropped differently and stuff, would that matter?

lakim shabazz
01-28-2010, 02:32 PM

UpstateHate585

thats what im afraid of haha. i want them to be decent sized but would like them to be framed within the page if that makes sense

kmcdon3960
01-28-2010, 02:46 PM
protip: when you crop, keep the original aspect ratio

UpstateHate585
01-28-2010, 02:58 PM
so if u crop x amount of pixels from one side, crop the same amount from the other?

sometimes things just look better cropped certain ways

would it be dumb to just have my portfolio on my laptop and bring that around to show people? that way i dont have to worry about printing and stuff. i have a few pics that have weird crop sizes though. fuck idk haha

ares
01-28-2010, 04:57 PM
Keeping the original aspect ratio wouldn't crop equal pixels off both sides unless your image is square, it keeps the crop in proportion to the original image. Maintaining the aspect ratio can be useful but its not something you want to do all the time, especially when making prints. 8x10 isn't a natural format for images.

As far as portfolios go, carrying it around on your laptop is unprofessional. If you don't want to make a book and get prints done, put them online. There are plenty of free portfolio based web sites and tools out there. If you print your shots or not you want to maintain consistency when it comes to portfolio.

Leica SLR's are worth heaps, but aren't really any better than any other manual focus SLR. It's the lenses that are dope, and they have a price tag to match. If you wanna go leica, expect to spend a lot in the long run.

I tried using my friend's d40 the other day, I couldn't even figure out how to work the shit.

It wouldn't even let me do aperture priority or program mode with my series e lens attached, and even when I did get it to work it wouldn't meter. What kind of shit is that? Even my canon will meter nikon lenses.

Because those lenses were made in the 1970's, before matrix meters were even around. You're canon will not be able to meter with them, it probably just says it is metering cos it doesn't even know what kind of lens its got on it. Remember the canon EOS system is a very new one, so of course all it's systems work together flawlessly, Nikon has been around as industry standard since the 50's, so of course those ancient lenses have trouble working on 2010 cameras. Nikon had to make a choice to cater for both it's old pro's using nikon manual bodies to adjust to auto focus etc, whereas canon left their old manual focus users in the dust, forced to upgrade their bodies and lenses to EOS when it came about in the 80's.

I really don't want to perpetuate the canonikon thing, but it definetly meters just fine. set to AV mode it autoexposes just like it's an ef lens.

Anyone got any darkroom equipment they want to sell me? I need a 4 liter glass jug and some graduated cylinders, actually I only need the jug, I switched to powdered developer (instead of that premade sprint standard bullshit) and I don't have anything to mix and store it in, it's the only thing holding me back from developing all these rolls :(.

none of the above sir

you have to build yourself a reputation for taking pics in the hardcore scene and if your at a show you can ask local bands if they want live pics and you can charge them, but keep in mind that local bands dont have alot of $$

you really cant ask signed or touring bands to pay you, youll get laughed at...they have SOOO many kids taking pics for them, and they really dont know that your THAT much better then all the rest to where they should actually dig into their sponsor money to pay you

if they want you bad enough, they'll pay you

make yourself known, it takes a while...if you know alot of people in the scene it helps...it helped me
