It doesn't look like his stuff is over processed to me. His B&W stuff looks like he used an on camera setting from a point and shoot.

I'm not trying to discourage or hate, but you should humble yourself. Bombing science may be on your dick because of what you post, but remember this place isn't about photography.

learn to compose your shots better. Tilting the camera doesn't make you shot interesting necessarily, nor does it make the shot interesting for that matter. Over post processed shots make you look like every other wannabe photographer on the Internet. I don't know if you're doing this in post or not, but unless you take the picture in Black and White, then it probably shouldn't be in Black and White. The borders are entirely unnecessary, and, coupled with the watermark, scream trying too hard. Why do you have the watermark anyway? Think someone is going to steal you photos? Think that some magazine or gallery is going to see your watermark on those things and come running to you with a job? Chill out when people critique you, its the internet sweetheart, of course most people don't give real critiques. You have some good shots in there, but most of it is typical trying-too-hard artsy photography.

If you see something that you think is going to look good B&W, you shoot a normal raw frame then do the B&W conversion in photoshop, and thats whats up creative controll. Don't let your camera do the thinking for you.

Also, the comments about over-processing keep showing up and maybe I'm the only one who doesn't see it but those shots don't look over-processed. He's already said that he doesn't shoot in raw, and in quite a few of his shots the highlights are all blown out. So if he is actually processing his stuff, he needs to tone down those highlights so theres actually visible detail. And if he was working on his stuff in photoshop, you would think he would try and reduce some of that noise.

I was more thinking in the world of film for the B&W comment, but whatever. Of course don't let the camera do the thinking for you, but a lot of the time color shots that people try to convert to B&W turn into either all middle grays or blown out whites and super saturated blacks.

Its the tones that makes me think its over post processed. Most of the images are over saturated and very high in contrast, generally meaning that someone just used a contrast slider in photoshop to get the image. I could be wrong, but it looks like those images have the symptoms. Perhaps the noise is the product of this as well? That or a sharpening filter.

As for the whole shooting in RAW thing, I feel like if the shots were in RAW, they wouldn't look like this, because there would be control over the specific color paths, rather than the whole image.

black and white is a sensitive subject with digital, usually hit or miss. for skin tones you want a kind of silver sheen and dark grey shadows. with film theres lots of factors like how long you expose it when you enlarge & print, amount of time you agitate when you develop, and the grain of the film. super fine film grains usually have little to no heavy blacks but lots of varied grey tones.

here is a print i did in class, granted it isn't very good, but its a good demonstration of "traditional" film black and white.

The top one looks like your typical HDR, could have probaly been processed better, theres no details in the trees which kill it for me... The second one is really well done, maybe hdr, maybe film shot on a technicial camera. Kind of hard to tell, its pretty small and lowres but those mountains are looking pretty sharp too me.

After that, probaly some work done to them in post.

its a blend of photos shot at different exposures so you can get real nice hi-lights and low lights. you need to shoot in raw too. you can Google it. impractical, but pretty.

You don't need to shoot raw, you could easily make an hdr from jpegs shot on a point and shoot. The only time you would need to shoot raw for something you intend to process hdr is if the scene had a lot of movement in it, and you couldn't capture it fast enough with your bracketed shots. In that case you would take your one raw file and process it multiple times to different exposures. Don't get the wrong impression, raw is without a doubt the better choice to work on, for anything but it can be done with jpegs.

Far as software goes see if you can get photomatix pro, its the best program Ive found.

Far as the pictures go, take a good look around for examples(good being the key word). hdr is trendy these days, and some people think that they should shoot everything hdr, when not everything needs the hdr process to be captured. Also dont over process your shit, I cant stress that enough.

probably the best tip i've been given about photography is:
Never shoot in auto.


it's made it so much more fun, theres 1000's of ways you can take a picture of one thing just simply by changing the various setting. Get to know your camera, learn what ISO, WB, F-stop and Shutter Speed are. Then go out and have fun with all of it.

Shooting in auto is like jerking off, shooting in manual is like getting laid. they're both good, the second one is just so much better.

I use an external flash it doesn't need to be remotely fired because its such a long exposure you can fire it at any time you want. If your getting a wide angle I would move away from the sigma 10-20 and get the tokina 12-24 purely because of the build quality. I've heard bad things aobut the quality of the sigma lenses. I have the tokina 12-24 and I love it.

Raw is hardly a trend.. If you've ever made any black and white prints you would know that you play around with exposure, burning, dodging ect while making the print. i thought you had a normal fisheye lens, or is it a rectilinear 10.5 with that adapter thing

The adapters have shit optical quality around the edges... No point using them once the novelty of fisheye dies down.

Get the 10.5mm fisheye and a de-fishing program.
