does anyone have any experience with other rangefinders, zorkis, FEDS, etc. it looks like they could be a cheaper alternative to a voigtlander.
photography is not for poor people :/

I hear good things about zorki's, but these aren't M mount remember, they are screw mount. But there are a ton of cheap screw mount lenses on ebay.
Voigtlanders are great, find a cheap one on ebay 2nd hand. An R2M or similar. Save for one bro! You will learn more about photography than you ever thought possible from these cameras.

zorki's are great, they are just old. all they have are shutter speed, aperture, and a shutter button. thats it. using a camera without a meter is easy, you just gotta let yourself get experimental with it, it's hit and miss.

remember the sunny 16 rule, set your shutter speed to whatever is closest to your film ISO speed, eg:

100ISO = 125th or whatever is closest to 100th of a second your camera allows
400ISO = 500th etc etc

then just correspond your aperture to how the shadows look. EG

sunny day, sharp edged dark shadows = F/16
sunny day, softer greyer shadows = F/11
barely visible shadows = F/8
no shadows = F/5.6
shooting in shade on a sunny day, eg under trees or under a street canopy = F/4
inside with reasonable light from lamps or whatever = F/1.4-F/2.8 it doesn't really matter.

If you are shooting into the shade but also want some of the areas exposed to sunlight to show, just set the aperture somewhere in the middle of f/4 and f/8 so around f/5.6, and that will put both the shade areas and the sunlit areas into a reasonable exposure.

sounds complex, really isn't at all, but you gotta let go of exact numbers and exposures which digital auto cameras get your brain used to. Your shots sometimes come out too dark or too light, but it really doesn't matter, thats half the fun. the mistakes.

EASY!

PS I'd get a zorki4, if you were going down that track. But really, get a voigtlander. save.

1. What's your (fake) name and how long have you been working with photojournalism?

Joe Hockley. I am not a photojournalist.
2.How did you become interested in photography, and what education path did you take to get into the career?

A degree in graphic design got me interested in photography. I like photographing people.
3.Where do you work and what are the working conditions like?

I work freelance and it's great. Easy and well paid.
4.How often do you work, and if you don't mind me asking, what sort of income do you have?

I work every now and then, but it will improve as my name becomes more well known.
5. What kind of camera equipment do you use and carry with you?

Nikon D3s for my work, Leica M4 for day to day photography.
6.What kind of personal traits do you ned to succeed in this industry?

Good with people is key. Good technical knowledge to be able to achieve results your employers want.
7.What is a typical day at work like for you?

Shoot, go home, post process, sleep.
8.What's your biggest challenge working as a photographer?

The pressure of having only one shot at getting the photographs you want.
9.What's your favourite part of the job?

Being left with one or two shots I can add to my portfolio that I am proud of.
10.How do you think your job will change in the future? Is there job security?

So long as I keep getting better, and my name becomes more well known I reckon there is a ton of job security in photography, but it takes work to get to that stage.

hope that didn't sound too self absorbed. haha

I'm in the process of covering myself in pericings, but it's really not a mainstream thing. It's becoming bigger and bigger, but must guys stick to just ears or nothing at all, and girls usually do ears and maybe nose and bellybutton.

Personally, I like to dress like, I'm not completely retarded. But that's just me
I like my piercings. I don't have many anymore, just my lobes twice and my labret. I did have my anti eyebrow and various other things. And I have one tat, but it covers my entire upper arm.

I don't like to pretend I'm a black guy. The only people that dress like they're from the ghetto, aren't. I grew up in the Barrio. It's weird, because everyone in the US that actually grows up in a shit neighborhood wants to get away from it, and those who don't wish they could pretend they were. Playing dress up like a black guy and pretending you have some HARD LYF SHIT YO is just as bad as emo kids that wear their sister's pants and pretend THEY have problems.

People need to grow up and wear clothes that fit them on both ends, and stop trying to be people they aren't.

well, canada is still part of americas so ill add..
tattoo/piercing culture just got bigger more mainstream in my opinion.. im 10 tattoos in with a span of 3.5 years jsut cause i used to work in a tattoo shop. same with piercings, i wasnt all hyped up about them but wanted to try the pain/look since they were free.

i dont listen to hardcore, although my gf does. i dont mind it much. im more in to oldschool/underground hiphop and more in to the electronic genre lately (dnb/jungle,dubstep, a few sub genres of house)

AK, what is deemed "cool" in your part of the globe?

You just need to be a GC (good cunt) to be cool in my city, no amount of piercings or holes is gonna make you any more cool down here, in fact the opposite, it's gonna make you look like more of a try hard homo.

Again, not hating, just being real. Come down here, unless you are an absolute GC, you are going to be a laughing stock.

Tattooing however is massive here. I've got time for tattooing. Pierced nipples is still for fags though. Sorry.

really depends what you want to do with photography. If you want to make money by shooting for clients often, digital is the way to go unless you're rich. If you just want to shoot for yourself or maybe sell some prints, film is alright. looks mad good, but digital is more efficient if you are shooting in high volume.

im already getting rid of my 2 week old Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 EX DC Macro...gonna replace it with Sigma's new 17-70 f/2.8-4 DC OS HSM
constant 2.8 is nice but i think id rather have the OS(optical stabilization), HSM, and the added focal length

Canon 35mm f/2.0 is already in order along with the sigma. id probably use that more for walk around

some of the shots are a tad too grainy for my tastes but not bad

and channa- if they do notice, i would at least offer a reshoot. imo, it would be pretty lame to give them out of focus shots and then be like "too bad" I could see if they didnt like her outfit or something that they had control over but thats all you on the focus. no hate, just sayin

Thats from the scannign process at my lab, I thought I'd give them a go scanning my negatives instead of me, some were better some were worse.

Great shots A.K.
Imma have to find a link on this sunny 16, I can use it with my digital correct? its not just a film method.

I got my holga and i haven't even shot it yet...sad really.

Yep its for anything, but no real point in using it on a digital camera with an inbuilt light meter. More for older cameras with no light meter at all.

just a thought if you got a nice film camera with and no light meter, bring a point and shoot and fuck around in manual so you know what your settings need to be at. i don't use film, it just occured to me though.

Thats why polaroid was invented... so that in the studio you would check your lighting settings with a polaroid, so you didn't need to waste any expensive medium format film.

(shock horror, no polaroid was not invented for hipsters to take photos of their girlfriends)

Some boring fashion stuff I shot for a lookbook. One large softbox to model's left, large white reflector to model's right, two backlights to wash out the background... even though they were set too low. My mistake, although I kinda like seeing the texture of the white backdrop.

in modern times, one would think it's much more convenient to carry with you a small point and shoot rather than a polaroid just to sample light. Maybe if you're in a studio the polaroid would be nice because it's closer to actual film, but i personally would not want to carry one with me all the time if I were a film photographer.

I was talking about before digital was used. Which is actually less than 10 years ago. And I'm talking about industry professionals in the fashion industry and other industries. Nowadays polaroid is not needed, which is why it's being discontinued.

yeah im takin a darkroom class over the summer so ill just develop my shit there, and ill be able to use the darkroom at college next year.

one evil you should straighten that out, and generally its not a great idea to divide a picture in half like that, it makes the image a little too static

does your bw film cost 9?
i get it for 6, but i think i might try and order bulk soon

lakim shabazz

black and white 400 cost 8
colour 400 which is what im using cause it cheaper to develop is 5.40+ tax
