I went and bought the d60 for my first camera, don't. Ive had it maybe 6 months, now im selling it to upgrade. its much better to invest in an older body and better lenses. you will NOT find yourself needing the extra mega pixels.
if you can, try and go for a nikon d70(for the AF motor)otherwise a d40 will be fine. the d60 does not have an AF motor; neither does the d40. you will find yourself spending more cash on a new body much earlier if you buy a d60/d40 over a d70

I'm strongly thinking about buying the D3100 when it's released (Or, whenever it's in stock, rather. I could probably have no problem picking one up at work, but even with my discount it costs more than Amazon/Adorama) I was going to buy a D5000, but the 3100 seems like a much better option. Either way I'm keeping my D40 for backup.

Doesn't the D3100 lack an AF motor? Why bother upgrading a D40 to another entry level DSLR?

I don't care about the focus motor. Not having one has never bothered me. "Entry level" is a little subjective. People that use D3x's will refer to a D700's as 'entry level.' If it's better than the D5000, and about the same as a D90 (Minus the motor and actually AFs in movie mode) then it's more than enough of an upgrade for what I need it for. Provided it's not shit at high ISOs, which is my biggest concern, since I do most of my shooting in the evening.
Case in point, I don't need or really ever want a full frame camera.

The D3P being fake should have been a little obvious by the following;
An amateur feature Nikon has taken away from the D3P to help professional journalists is the old tripod socket.
Old timers remember these from the days of film, but occasionally they can cause problems crossing international borders.
Tripod sockets can collect dirt or even bugs, which causes real problems with agricultural inspections. As we who travel know, transporting soil or anything alive across borders freaks out customs officials for the potential to transport plant and animal diseases.

. you make a good point. however I did have a budget in mind and I am well below it right now and all I wanted are three cameras a point and shoot which i have,a 35mm.slr which i have, and now I am after a dslr. just so I can have a reference point from which to base an opinion on...
so far I like the instant grat. of the p&s ,as well as the features of the SLR so the next and obvious progression would be to pursue a DSLR but to stay within my budget.so that I can afford to get accessories as the need arises.
trust me I am doing research, I have set a budget and I am looking to people I trust for guidance and opinions...I truly thank you for your input and anyone elses for that matter...
so far I have only spent 63 bucks that includes the N50, battery and charger, film and manual. I set aside a budget of $500 so you can see I am well below that mark. I am still learning and have a long way to go before I can even think seriously about getting a $26k camera but one can dream

You also need to think seriously about what those $26,000 MF cameras are used for too. I'm sure most people on here and other photo forums will never use one.
Invest some time in looking at a Nikon or Canon. If you've got the N50 you'll probably want to go for a Nikon DSLR, because you'll be able to switch lenses across both cameras. (Unless you're using DX format lenses on the N50, that won't work.. But all lenses for the N50 will work with a Nikon DSLR)
Find a second hand D80 body or something. What really matters is the glass you buy for it.

What really matters is the glass you buy for it. man that is helpful because the whole reason i was looking towards another make all together was because i was told that nikon slr lenses and dslr lenses wouldn't interchange..now that I read what you wrote I researched that and found that what you wrote was correct and what i was told was incorrect... and those $26k cameras are used for poppin' collars after you made your mark and get paid and want the world to know that they are gonna pay you to get photographed by you... mostly high end advertising for catalogues and big time magazine stuff...if you were gonna put it into a car analogy the $10k nikon would be the Corvette zo6 and the $30k Leica would be The SLS AMG both cars both do just about the same thing but people who are in the know will definately know the difference... but then that opens a whole new set of variables... but like I said I'm no where near ready for an expensive camera.I can easily afford one but there are other things that obviously take precedence over something like that...until I can make money with a camera I ant gonna buy nothing expensive...plus I'm going to take a few classes first to learn even more than i can figure out by myself.
thanx again you have been most helpful

Success is just as much photography skill as it is who you know, keep that in mind. a lot of times it is who you know that also keeps you from succeeding.learning who to know and how to get their attention that is the tricky part, but once you figure out the when , where and how. it is only a matter of time before your integrity warrants success or not.

I think you're a bit jaded with the whole idea of a camera being used as a trophy or comparing it to a car CuCCui...
Your camera is your tool for creating images, it doesn't matter what you're shooting with. People won't like you more if you're holding a camera that set you back $15k. Infact most clients don't know much about the cameras anyway, they're interested in what you're producing.
Watch this. http://fstoppers.com/iphone/
You don't throw $15k on a camera to use it as a status symbol, it's about practicality and how you're going to use it. Medium/large format cameras are mostly used for things like architecture and landscape photography where you need the extended dynamic range and megapixels because you're blowing up huge prints. Also a lot of people use Mamiyas, etc.. for fashion photography too.
What do I want to gain? I have a love for it and always have. I would like it to become my livelihood but for the sole reason that I love doing it. I'm not in it to show off my money or gear. When I'm shooting I never want to be waving expensive gear around.
Here's an old photo for the chatter...

Get a tripod, set your aperture to somewhere between f/11 and f/16. Try your shutter speed around 1/100 and do some bracketing, change it as you feel fit. Use the self timer too or when you release the shutter you'll get a bit of movement depending on your shutter speed.
Haven't got any moon shots in a while so just try out different settings, fiddle with the aperture/shutter speed. I usually shoot at a low ISO anyway if I can.

I'm sure there are other, these are just off the the top of my head
the L lenses are gonna run you at least $1300, maybe cheaper used. anything that fast and wide wont come cheap. What body do you have? if you have a cropped camera and are looking for wide angles check out the cannon 10-20mm of the tokina 12-24mm

Okay this is what I just bought.it seems comparably priced with everything else i've been seeing...the only thing terribly wrong with a d40x is the camera doesnt have an AF motor on it but if all of my lenses have an af motor on them then I'm good to go,right... take a look and let me know what you think.

Good deal.
Why does everyone bitch about the lack of an AF motor so much? It's really not a big deal. And older AF lenses are great. You're gonna' want a 50. Mad fun.

I know a 50mm is the next step...the af motor on my other 18-55mm just went out so i kinda fixed that right then plus my other one wasn't a nikkor lense so i kinda made out I have a n50 film a d40x( which to my surprize has 10 mega pixels,vs the 6.1 on a d40)...i have a good idea on how to make the money back...advertise in the paper for location photographer 100 exposures for 75 bucks in cool locations around town...extra charge for extra special locations because some spots charge for setting up ...cd check out the 100 strangers group on flickr looks like a great way to get to get to know people.

Because it limits you to buying only the newest AF-S lenses which are more expensive. Manual focus is ok but sometimes you just need the speed of auto focus.
If your willing to compromise speed, check the Sigma 10-20mm 4.0-5.6.
thats still not around the 300$ mark.. i think a prime is his best bet.

okay, then what prime ? the widest prime they make besides the 14mm is the 20mm and 24mm both of which cost roughly the same as the lens I suggested, and on a crop body are equivalent to 32mm and 38mm respectively.

look around first, try ebay and craigslist..it took me about 6 weeks but settled on a d40x.do some research it's easy look on ebay , find one you think you can afford highlight and copy paste it in your search menu... then read about it... there are alot of decent cameras that can be had for cheap.and never bid on anything from the front page because 6 or7 pages down the way you might find a buy it now for half of what the same thing is being bid for with perhaps more accesories to boot.

Half frame means it shoots two photos within a single 35mm frame. So from a 36 shot film you get 72 photos.

I dunno what you mean about the flash head zooming as you focus?
But it does zoom it's flash head as you zoom the lens. It's pretty dope.
It will get the correct exposure EVERY time. Nikon has their flash systems down to a science. Canon ones just don't.
I reckon you should buy a fully manual film camera or rangefinder. You'd love it.

SLR - you are looking through the lens via a mirror.
Rangefinder - you are looking through a viewfinder and framing your image using framelines like this:
http://photo.net/equipment/leica/m5/M5-35-135-web.jpg
That little rectangle box in the dead centre is where you focus. These are called "rangefinder" cameras because they focus using a dual-image rangefinding device. You turn a ring on your lens, and when two superimposed images line up, you're in perfect focus.
eg
http://www.ndroo.com/blog/images/misc7/rfcover5.jpg
Pros of rangefinders : very very small. Rangefinders are small cameras so they are less noticable, and allow you to get closer to your subjects and make your subjects feel more relaxed than having a bulky SLR in their face.
Better quality lenses because the back elements of the lens can get closer to the film, with an SLR there is a big mirror in the way.
So long as there is enough light to see, you can focus a rangefinder camera immediately and without needing any annoying AF assist lights. Just flip the focus until the two images merge, and voila!, perfect focus. With my D3s, I have to guess and focus manually by trial and error when the light gets too dim. With rangefinder cameras, it's never too dim.
The shutters are very very quiet because there is no mirror flapping up and down. This lets you be less noticeable. in a quiet place.
As SLR mirrors flip up to take a picture, their viewfinders go black at the most important instant: the instant at which an image is recorded forever. Rangefinder camera viewfinders never black out, so you always know the subject's expression as it's recorded.
You can focus, compose and shoot with both eyes, since the rest of the camera doesn't cover your left eye.
Rangefinder cameras have no shutter lag. With a rangefinder, press the button, and it goes. You've captured the peak of the moment, forever. With an SLR, the mirror has to get out of the way before the shutter can open.
I took a few of those from Ken rockwells page on the subject. These are the reasons I always take my Leica out and never my D3s.

my new used cmaera came in the mail today but i had to sign for it and i wasnt home so i have to wait till the 4th. to pick it up at the post office...But i am curious if we have decided on a theme for the next battle...if not i'd like to suggest a night photo just to see what the rest of you come up with and also to see what i can come up with.we have some cool buildings that at night are lit up kinda neat... I'm just acheing to try this thing out... so far I'm not thrilled with my film ive been getting developed, hence why youve not seen any of it i just wish there was was someone near me that had film camera experience, because the fine folks at the camera shop are less compassionate to my inexperience than you guys are.but i keep on getting rolls developed and continually dissapointed, but i havent done any night shots as of yet...once i get something i can be halfway proud of i'll post but so far it's all terrible...

What do you mean the guys aren't as compasionate as we are? Do they talk shit? If so, I'd dick punch them.
And I dunno', pretty much ALL my shots are at night. I like the battles because they force me to do new things.

no man it's like always this old lady ,who i suspect knows less about photography than I.all she ever says is like check out some forums ,buy some books, blah, blah blah...and when i ask if there is anyone else that can help me she's like every one else is busy with other customers...maybe i need to find another shop, perhaps.okay thats what I'll do... the pictures turn out all right it just doesnt have the same feel as.twiddling with the exposures myself..theres really not much difference between getting them developed at walmart,Walgreens or at "city" camera all though they say were tons better than the one hour photo places.all ive experienced is the same amount of customer service, not much difference and for the money jeeze i've already burned through 10 rolls 2 rolls were blk and white thats already like 120 bucks just in film and development...I can see why digital was put to use...I think I'm just used to seeing the clear picture on a big screen and not this grainy crap when I scan it, or a tiny 5x7...my wife says theyre good but i know you guys would say different though. I need to go to sleep. gnite
back alley, im guessing you had to fix the distortion on that house photo, in post?
nice.
i never realized why AK was always annoyed with the distortion, now i kind of understand.

Nope, I didn't do any post processing to it other than lighting up the right side of it, since one of the lights illuminating it was out. Other than that, I didn't do anything
took the photo from a far with a long lens?
edit: i was also thinking of straight blacking out the markings right on the body(good thing ive only used tape for now)
...its just the came out with a newer model Canon S91 and im thinking of trading it in or just selling it.
apparently its even better at low light and it actually has HD vid which i always wanted on a P&S
oh and that jog wheel at the back, it doesnt spin as freely anymore which was one of the main complaints about the previous (my) model S90
and my Canon XS just came in from repair!(2nd time) will be picking that up later today after work...hope it fucks up again ;)
wish me luck guys

Makes me wanna go take some architecture shots.. Might head out tomorrow/tomorrow night if there's not a storm

Also, those shots of my cameras were taken in a lightbox I made today. I'll post up a photo later, it was a good bit of fun. Haven't got any material for the top yet so I just left it open and pointed a shoot-through umbrella into it with a Sigma EF-530
Good little project.

i dont understand how the new canon sensor can be so big....
cucuui what particularly about your film is not turning out well?

Canon says it has developed the world’s largest CMOS image sensor, which it hinted will be used to develop HD video enabled digital SLR cameras able to capture filmed action in one-half the brightness of a moonlit night.
In a statement released this morning it said the chip measures 205x205mm, which is around 40 times the size of the full-frame sensor it uses in its EOS 1Ds Mk III and EOS 5D Mark II cameras, and is claimed to be among the largest chips that can be produced from a 12-inch (300mm) wafer.”
“Because its expanded size enables greater light-gathering capability, the sensor is capable of capturing images in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a professional-model digital SLR camera.
“In the past, enlarging the size of the sensor resulted in an increase in the amount of time required between the receiving and transmission of data signals, which posed a challenge to achieving high-speed readout. Canon, however, solved this problem through an innovative circuit design, making possible the realisation of a massive video-compatible CMOS sensor. Additionally, by ensuring the cleanest of cleanroom environments during the production process, the sensor minimizes image imperfections and dust.
“Because the increased size of the new CMOS sensor allows more light to be gathered, it enables shooting in low-light environments. The sensor makes possible the image capture in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor, facilitating the shooting of 60 frame-per-second video with a mere 0.3 lux of illumination.”
“Potential applications for the new high-sensitivity CMOS sensor include the video recording of stars in the night sky and nocturnal animal behaviour.
“Through the further development of distinctive CMOS image sensors, Canon will break new ground in the world of new image expression, in the area of still images as well as video.

It'll be used for NASA and shit I reckon.
so.. that vs the best camera+ best lens...
...and it probably cost as much as a luxury car

What triggers did you get? I got some Cactus V4's recently, heaps good for the price. Only had misfires because the batteries in the flash unit itself were going.
Started on the tumblr ish too http://joelwphoto.tumblr.com/
