A fisheye attachment, I didn't know you could change a lans on that, but I find the my wide angle/ fisheye combo work great on my D40, out at 55mm it takes amazing macro shots, wide angle all the way down to 20, and full fisheye from 20-18. As seen above.

They tend to be awful optical quality especially around the edges on those cheap fisheyes... save for a real one.

Well assuming you know what HDR is, I used a single RAW image to get the different exposures, and used a program called photomatix to turn it HDR, but only midly.

I use it on my little FE2, and with that it works great, nice and wide and a fast aperture. For Digi there is not much point using it, it's fixed and not that wide from the DX crop factor. But if you have a full frame digi then it would be great. Definitely save for the tokina 11-16mm, its 2.8 and its amazing. Also consider the 10.5mm fisheye, as its perfect for people and party's and its wide as fuck and you can straighten up the fisheye lines afterwards if it's an issue for you. EG:

No I use my 28mm on my FE2, DX lenses don't work on full frame and film cameras. Yes those shots of them fellas with tattoos are taken with my fisheye, but they have been straightened the same way as I did with the hotel bathroom flick. The Nikon fisheyes aren't AF-S, so you will have to manually focus them, but they are so wide that they are pretty hard to get out of focus, but it's annoying enough for me to sell my D60 for a D80 when I got my fisheye. You can buy AF-S 50mm's in f1.8 and f1.4. A better option for your DX camera though is the 35mm AF-S f1.8. Look it up. Remember DX cameras crop the image, so if you buy a 50mm lens, it's going to become 75mm on a DX camera. So therefore, buying the 35mm, it's going to become 55mm. If you don't know anything about this, read here:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/crop-factor.htm
It's a must know for buying lenses.

I've heard the tokina fisheye has average optical quality because it is a zoom lens. The canon I hear is fine, except it is full frame, so used on a small format camera like yours, you are cropping most of the fisheye-ness out. Canon does not have a fisheye lens for its smaller format cameras. Unlike nikon, which has the 15mm fisheye for full frame, and the 10.5mm fisheye for small format DX.

Canon doesnt have a fisheye for the smaller frame DSLRs but the widest one is the EF-S 10-22mm--im saving up for this one--its about $700 but ive seen pictures taken with it and it looks awesome

No, its an ultra-wide. Really fun lens to shoot with, and if you don't plan on upgrading to full frame its a good choice. If full frame is the way your going, I'd suggest the 14mm 2.8.

try and change the angles of your photos. these are from eye level in which people see all the time, so these photos lack some sort of individuality.
try changing angles, get down lower to the ground, 'worms eye view' as such
also if you were shooting in auto for these, explore the aperture or shutter priority, depending on what camera your using, it will allow you to get different types of shots and progress you on
most of all just keep shooting like anything, you will soon learn what looks good and what doesnt

Whoever was wondering about an ultrawide for a 1.6 canon, look at the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6.
It's a little slow, but pretty good optical quality, and you can get some rad distortions with it. It doesn't work on full frame cameras though, so take that into consideration. Here's a sample.
Also, a.k. you're shit is on point like always. I will go to New Zealand before I die.

Yeah i got myself alot of learning to do... I'll be alright once i know my way around my camera more
alright, so my canon takes great shots when everything is still but as soon as a slight movement occurs, the picture gets all blurry, unless I have the flash. I wanna be able to take nice shots without the flash too, can anyone help me out?

lower Fstop, eg, f2.8 for lower light and faster shutter speeds, to stop movement. what canon do you have? if its a dslr this is easy if its a point and shoot then, well, it's a point and shoot and it's useless.
I copped the Rebel XSi, and thanks for the tip Ak ima try that right about now!

If you are worried about stopping movement, use the TV setting on your camera, and spin the dial to a fast shutter speed.
If you want to change depth of field for blurry backgrounds, use AV mode and set a large aperture, eg, F3.5

If you are trying to use fast shutter speeds in dim light, they often come out dark because the shutter is not open long enough to let in sufficient light to create the photograph. In this case if you need a faster shutter speed to stop movement in a dimly lit environment, adjust your cameras ISO to a higher level. ISO allows your camera to be used in dimmer light, but in turn you lose picture quality. ISO100 is usually standard for sunny days and will give you the best picture quality. In dim light 400 to 500 is usually fine in terms of quality, but will allow you to shoot in dimmer light at faster shutter speeds. Keep in mind the higher the ISO, the grainier the image will be.
On newer DSLRs there is usually an auto ISO setting, which worked out the ISO for you and allows you to hand hold your camera and shoot in most lighting.
Another way to combat this is to buy a lens with a large aperture, (bigger hole, to let in more light). For example, a 50mm lens with an aperture of f/1.4. (The larger the aperture, the smaller the F number) These lenses allow in more light to the sensor and therefore can be used in dimmer light.

beautiful photos. my fisheye is the most useless lens i've ever bought, photographically, but its also the lens ive used the most, and ive had the most fun with it at parties, cos it brings party photos to life. Don't get one unless you go to a lot of partys and shoot for radio stations at gigs and things like that. they are USELESS for proper photography.
MoNkEy
06-27-2009, 06:21 AM
that is exactly why I havent bought one yet :D I bought a 10-20mm sigma. Does the job for me. I know I would use a fisheye for maybe 2-3 photos out of 100. It just dosent warrant spending 300 pound on one. I wish they did a cheaper decent quality one. If I could get one for £150 I could see myself buying one. But the cheapest is around 3-400.
If you can use a fisheye properley, and use it to some advantage then they are sick. But most of my stuff I just need a bog standard wide angle, so the 10-20 does it for me.

I still shoot a fuck load of film, the widest I got with that is a 17mm Tokina. And its the nuts, love shooting film. just so expensive these days. I used to shoot cheap film, then I bought some velvia 100 slide film, I fell in love with it. I will only shoot velvia. Cost like £20 for 5 rolls of 36 exposures, and thats on my mates discount where he works!
And my sig pic is a panoramic, Its sized to long to be a proper 12x4 pano, its like 16x4 i think...
yer a full frame camera would be lovely, but to be fair the amount of abuse my cameras get, if I busted it i would be pissed. The first day I had my 10-20mm sigma I nearly stacked it in a sewer. I think thats the main reason I have a d40x, Its as good as a d80, but £200 cheaper, and I can pull out the same photos with one. So why spend more than I have to.
You seen those 8mm fisheyes, thats some serious shit...like seeing behind the camera :D

if your into slide film, you should check out fuji provia 100f. I've shot with the velvia and I like it but depending what Im shooting the velvia is sometimes a little too saturated for my liking. And you think its expensive for 35mm try buying film for medium format.. costs like $35 for a 10 pack, or $150 for a 50 pack, plus processing on top of that.

swivel the mode selector to 'M' and then you get the scroller, look through the viewfinder and you can change the shutter speed, will go from 30" (30sec) down to 1/4000 i think. Or go onto shutter priority mode. It will set everything automatically, but you can select the shutter speed manually.

no prob mate, google shutter priority mode on a d40...i use a d40x so its basically the same...i just cant seem to describe how to do it...so hoping it works for ya!
also the secks, I use a big torch I got....I shine it at what I want in focus and the camera will autofocus onto it 9 times out of 10....or I set the focus to Infinity, I was using a 10-20mm sigma, so the focal length is huge anyway...

I appreciate this post, because you simplified the affect I was wanting to get with my SX10, unfortunately the shutter speed only goes to 15" (secs) but that will most likely do just fine for me. Perhaps if I set it down to five I can use a flashlight in pitchblack and write out things.

immoral, 15 seconds would be fine if you can manually set your apature, f3.5 or something will prob be the lowest you can go. Then up the ISO to 2-400.
Also the way you can write things with a torch is kinda exactly what you said. Set yoour cam to do a 15sec exposure, in a dark place, go mad with a torch in the picture, and just experiment, I havent got any of my shots like that uploaded.
