wide angle lenses can be quite addicting. I love 'em all, 24mm and 35mm are 2 of my favorites.

I'm still thinking about selling/trading my 70-200f/4L (which I never use anymore) for a bessa.

I sold mine for the f/2.8L II. Very satisfied.

Hey A.K. Im going to be purchasing Either the D3 24.1 mega pixel version or the 12.1 version, will I have to buy FX lens or can I use my lens that I have for the smaller Nikons such as the D60,90,3100 etc.

Also have a question about light sensors, when you shoot it does it automatically change your camera settings?

Now add a grand or two for each lens you're going to want for it. Not to mention, by the time you ARE a professional photographer making a good living, that used D3 will be in serious need of a replacement. And more than likely outdated by a better, cheaper body. (As how Nikon seems to roll.)

Bread- Can you tell me WHY you think you need a d3? For real though, if you don't know what lenses will work on the camera you want, you need to do a bit more reading man. No hate, just trying to save you some money.

I say buy a d7000 and buy only nice fx lenses. That way, you can learn how to shoot (don't say you already know how to cuz everyone can still learn something to make them better) get to know how shit works, invest in some lighting, start getting some paying work. and until you feel limited by the d7000 and you are making enough as a photographer, upgrade. and by only buying fx lenses, you will be able to use the same lenses and not have to get net ones.

.A.K.4.7.
10-17-2010, 01:08 AM
I hate when people say they 'feel limited' by their cameras. My leica has shutter speed, aperture and a viewfinder, that's it and it's all I need to take pictures. The ONLY reason a pro buys a pro camera is for it's build quality because his camera is being used extensively on a daily basis so it needs to be durable. Everything else like iso is just luxury and isn't needed to do their work. Working photographers have got on fine for hundreds of years without things like digital iso and megapixels.

So if you 'feel limited' by your camera then stop blaming it and learn more about photography because even a d40 is extrodionarily more advanced than anything photographers have used for generations.

UpstateHate585
10-17-2010, 01:54 AM
here's my reasoning for upgrading. I am getting a d700 by xmas i hope. My d40 has the essentials (aperture, shutter speed, iso) but I want the image quality that a full frame has to offer along with nice lenses. the higher iso and mp count that it has are just extras. I look at them as more to play with and figure out how to use them to my advantage. since i am not going to use film seriously, I figure full frame will do me well for a while. I still love my d40 though

yeah you dont need an expensive camera... but if your shooting with a leica? lol, those are probably some of the cleanest/dopest cameras aside from hasselblad.ntm my buddy went to a hasselblad show earlier this week and shot with a $35'000 cam... ready for this? 60 megapixels!! lmao.... butttt yes full frame craps on lower models, you'd really just have to have one and learn to use it after having the lower models border line to full frame to really appreciate it, its totally necessary for alot of things such as weddings or other fast moving sports just as a couple of examples. butttt just the camera aint gonna do it for you... its all about the lenses, better lenses equal better pictures.. no doubt about that. butttt having an awesome camera cant teach you to be awesome and neither can art school lol

i find credentials in photography/art idk? i feel like most people who go to school for it are no where close to par before or after, notice i say most.. not all..i think school for photography is good for learning basics, photo film techiniques, and maybe meeting the right person.. pending where you are. How does full frame make it easier to take photos of fast moving sports and weddings???

My point about my Leica is that it is technologically one hundred years behind a D40 and yet they are still the most revered cameras you can buy simply because of it's raw simplicity and quality. Anyone that thinks their D40 is 'limiting' them then I invite them to pick up a leica or any other basic manual camera which doesn't even have a light meter and then go and tell me their D40 still 'limits' them.

Full frame=bigger sensor=bigger pixels=more data per pixel=better image quality. logically speaking.

also, the fact that full frame handles low light way better with the better iso capabilities provides better image quality. higher iso=faster shutter speeds as well. can be nice for fast moving stuff. but opening ur lens is a better option

Nope, thats not the case at all.

More pixels = better image detail whether full frame or cropped.
less pixels = usually means better ISO capability because the pixels are bigger and less cramped.
Sensor size has nothing to do with overall image detail.

So, the new 14MP D7000 technically has better picture quality than my D3s. But I don't care because 12MP is all I need for the stuff that I do. You really need to assess what you are going to be doing in your work. My mate has a D3 because he shoots skate photos and runs NZ's skate magazine, so he needs the ridiculous frame rate of the D3. I need it because I shoot a lot of events which are usually in dark rooms or at night, (but really, my fast lenses do most of that work 85 1.4 28-70 2.8 etc) and mainly because I need the double CF slots that the D3 has cos I am a bit of a machine gun shooter and end the day with at least 1000 photos to go through... really gotta work on that...

Cameras like the D3100 and D7000 are almost to par with D3 these days anyway in terms of high ISO's so I don't see why people want D3's so much other than as a fashion statement .

Here's some quick points:
APS-C sensor

Full manual control with aperture ring ON THE LENS and shutter control on the top.
1:1 Electronic viewfinder, AND 0.5:1 Optical viewfinder. downside: only 90% frame coverage instead of a real rangefinder that covers more then 100%

35mm f/2 lens that doesn't extend or collapse.

built in ND3 filter that you can switch on or off.

yeah you dont need an expensive camera... but if your shooting with a leica? lol, those are probably some of the cleanest/dopest cameras aside from hasselblad.ntm my buddy went to a hasselblad show earlier this week and shot with a $35'000 cam... ready for this? 60 megapixels!! lmao.... butttt yes full frame craps on lower models, you'd really just have to have one and learn to use it after having the lower models border line to full frame to really appreciate it, its totally necessary for alot of things such as weddings or other fast moving sports just as a couple of examples. butttt just the camera aint gonna do it for you... its all about the lenses, better lenses equal better pictures.. no doubt about that. butttt having an awesome camera cant teach you to be awesome and neither can art school lol

Yeah bro that 35,000 shit was wild.. But just a luxury. Not a necessity in any way at all in my opinion. And yeah man we take cooler pics with our iPhones than some people with their facy D3's

People like that are generally going to be a bit weird. You have to have a certain aura about you to go to a place like that (I'm assuming he goes to places of conflict) and photog all that shit.

Stuck on my next lens purchase....I dont feel the need to go full frame so im between the nikkor 17-55 2.8 and 24-70 2.8. I've read the 24-70 is sharper but its almost double the price. the 17-55 on a dx will get pretty much the same focal length as the 24-70 on an fx. any opinions? I have an 18-200 3.5-5.6 and 50 1.8 right now.

Obvious really. If you want a pro fast lens if you do a lot of low light stuff, the 17-55. Your 18-200 should be fine though! Do you really need the extra stop or two? You have a 50 1.8 which is way faster than the 17-55 so what do you need it for?

I want one so I can walk dodgey areas with eleven thousand dollar cameras... I already own a few small domke bags but I want something bigger that I can put day to day stuff in like books laptop etc as well as photo gear.

i think selective color was considered cool at one point, but now every p&s does it (and hence every 13 year old girl trying to be "artsy") so its kinda played.

i guess its considered to be in the same category as using shitty photoshop filters, except maybe not as bad.

i admire chris weeks more for his philosophy. his shots are good but have never really motivated/inspired me like the work of other photographers have. "documenting the human condition" and that pdf he wrote are what got me.

and while im talking the font/letter color on the new setup hurts my eyeballs

Word. HDR is a good example of one of those played out photoshop filters.
Your right about chris weeks, his street stuff isn't particularly inspiring although his work on assignment is VERY good.

Shot my first roll today, I know these are nothing special, was just trying to get a feel for things, they're shot on a Konica Auto S2, using 200 ISO kodak gold film.

It's pretty old and the light meter is toast, so these were taken just using my judgment

ive had it. great jpg
i saw a review that the RAW isnt all that great with noise handling
i really liked it. main beef i had were the sluggishness of the shutter. it took forever! and the burst rate.. dont even try
people always complained about the loosejog dial that changed settigns too easily accidentally.. it was that much of a problem for me.
also it was annoying to have HDMI plug cover on the side, yet its not even HD

if you can, go with s95 if you think the HD vid will be used it also handles low light better apparently.
2 of which i really wanted on a sleek compact point and shoot.

I don't understand how people consider those large brackets functional. That on the other hand looks great, hook up the brand or a link

Do you know both sunny 16 rule and hyperfocal distance? 2 essentials for fully manual cameras and street!
look them up especially hyperfocal distance! DOF scale on your lens is sooooooooo fuckign usefull once you understand it!

while on this topic.. where im at im actually learning this in the class ive been taking. we just started talking bout the hyperfocal and telefocal distances and the DOF.. and im learing a lot from the class... but time to go paint

I call this one hiding in the shadows because of the way I manipulated lights. Also this goes to show how creative you can get and not have to buy $0298493284 worth of lighting toys to create some magic. Shot in a living room. 1 strobe to the right with an umbrella.

Sorry bout the size, but gotta be this size cos they go together so nicely, with that dope light leak in the middle. Spells the end of my Kiev 60 already though. Oh well, can't expect much from a Soviet built camera.

people always say to not stick the horizon in the center but i think it really works with this photo, love the colours.

also a question to everyone, what would you say would be better for street photography, auto or manual focus? i use manual 95% of the time but ive realised auto could be a big help?

.A.K.4.7.
10-31-2010, 11:42 PM
Autofocus can be slower cos it often doesn't track what you want it to and can focus on the wrong thing. I like to be in control of everything personally.
Setting the hyperfocal distance at f/16 with a wide enough lens means I don't even have to focus at all.
LEARN THAT SHIT.

ive been practicing my wide open focusing at night. im really pleased with what i taught myself
its not that ive always relied on auto focus(cause you really cant rely on AF on lowlight), ive just never really paid attention to the numbers on the lens barrel.
gonna be posting a few that shot with full manual settings/focusing hip shots
