Am i seeing what I'm seeing? 5D mark ii for $1,600?? Too good to be true?
http://www.kv-cameras.com/canon-eos-5d-mk-ii-body-only?

Not only is the price worrying, but also the fact that it shows a photo of a 5d mk1 and not a mk2. I would never buy a camera parallel imported there's just too much at stake if you end up with a faulty example.

If you are going to be shooting in low light conditions or at night the D3000 is not a good choice because it's performance at high ISO's is dreadful even next to the old D40.
If you can wait and save, the D3100 is a HUGE improvement and is a true successor to the D40. It's funny how short a life span the D3000 had before it was quickly replaced...
If you can't wait, the D40 is great for everything except making huge prints or cropping your images due to its 6 megapixels.

http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/digitalcamera/slr/d3100/index.htm

You can see the high ISO comparisons between the D3100, D3, and D40 here.

Yeah that is pretty lame. In their defense though there are no such things as photography majors. Only Arts (BA) or Fine Arts (BFA) each with a focal point in photography. Still no excuse not to know wtf aperture is!

Shoot Film! Learn to shoot a 35mm. And if you get a DSLR you should (Just like with film) shoot in manual mode as often as you can. Learn your camera, learn how cameras work and how to use your ISO, Apeture, shutter speed, WB etc.

Edit: I would go with the D3000 because of the movable LCD, it will help with framing in difficult angled situations.

That's what pisses me off with the new 'digital revolution.'

Especially in this market you do not have to know a fucking thing about how to camera in order to be a successful professional photographer. You will most likely be turning out shit photos, but people who don't know any better will pay for them. There are some people on this forum and others that I frequent who are leagues beyond the skill and talent levels that 90% of todays professional photographers are, and are just hobbyists like myself. Fact is that cameras are so good now that any fucktard can buy a pro camera, crop their shit in lightroom, -50 vignette, and people will eat their crap photos up. Just look at flickr, 90% of the stuff on there is garbage, but it's a huge circle jerk and everybody loves everything. I should go into business as a photographer, I'd never have to leave Program mode.

It's a pretty cool technique IMO, I haven't really tried it yet, just played around with it a little, testing to see how it works; but, anyways there are some cool examples here, most are pretty mediocre but a few are worth looking at:

now a quick question for anyone whos done any street photography...a real gay question but i am gonna ask....would you rather use a 28mm lens or a 50mm...im going out tommorow and i will take both for some reason the 28mm seems more appealing even though the 50mm would prob be best for potrait type shots :/

kmcdon3960
11-04-2010, 11:19 AM
I'd go for the 28mm. I have 2 cameras I use for street, one has a 24mm and one has a 45mm, I like the 24mm best because you can get closer, get the whole person in frame, and it's generally easier if you're shooting quick or from the hip.

You shooting on crop or FF, because if crop the 50mm is definetly gonna be pretty tight.

I probably already posted this, but it's what 24mm looks like, I was right next to this dude:

personally id rather use a 50, you can shoot from abit farther away and still isolate the subject. With a 28 if your not close enough your gonna get alot of unnecessary stuff in the shot.

for a project i need to do a series of portraits of people all in the same area, as in i have to goto the same spot for the next month and a half to shoot portraits of random people. any on approaching people in situations like that? i havent started yet but im kind of nervous

Not sure about the house thing. They shot that on a 5d because of the lack of space where they were shooting, not sure it makes sense to bring a huge tripod in. Not saying they didn't use one, just seems a bit overboard for where they were shooting.

Those tripods are used usually for video cameras, not dslr's. They're meant for really heavy cameras with big lenses.

Thats exactly it, being polite doesn't do it. You gotta be quite forceful and be already raising your arm before they even know whats hit them and once you've got the shot, then you become polite! (Or completely ignore them and keep walking.)
It really helps to approach people and compliment them on a feature of their overall look, "thats a great beard you got there, let me take your portrait?" Etc etc. You gotta be quite fast and don't give them an option of getting out of it. Street photographers have got to be pretty rude I reckon. Just ask Bruce Gilden.

If you're talking HD video, as far as canon goes it goes something like this. 5D > 7D > 60D/T2i 550D > 500D/T1i. Def. not the best one, but it does a good job for its price. Hope you didn't play retail because after the 550D released they sold pretty cheap on ebay.

it was taken at around.. 5 oclock, but in england now its getting really dark really fast, it was litterally night time, but i exposed it so it almost looked like full day time

One i took today
http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/ff496/JackWaaa/CSC_0005resize.jpg

Yer mate londons getting dark as FUCK recntly...went out a few fridays ago to get some photos with the other half...at 5 i literally couldnt shoot anymore with 400 iso film and f1.2 lens...was sucky as!

a quick word of advice either over expose photos of london....or HDR them so you get the bridge etc exposed properley...or shoot raw and use a bit of fill light :)

Also it was really wierd devoting a few hours to literally shooting random people on the street yesterday and for a bit on friday....some people notice ya some people dont have a clue what your doing....some people get all uncomftorble...others smile and let it happen...some people pulled some crazy faces...was a wierd experience but meh waiting for my filsm to come back from the lab...im not gonna lie though manual focus can suck a tad for shooting this stuff....

argh bloody rain! cant go out and shoot and print the photos i need for tuesday at college, i guess i'll have to go on a mission tomorrow morning till night, hopefully i will have alot more street photography aswell, and yeah, i think it is pretty weird shooting people like that, but when you have them in physical print or on a flickr or what ever, you get this satisfaction like yess, i got that, if you know what i mean? might just be going on at the moment lol :)

when you say you cant shoot at 1.2 iso 400, what shutter speed is that around? or borderline acceptable to you

i know my method isnt crisp but i recently found iso 800 not as bad as i remembered. that, f 2.8 and somewhre around 1/8-1/15 works fine for me.
ive been trying to work on my panning as well anyway.
and im talking about 11pm kinda shit. of course street lights/ambient lights

I find it gets your adrenaline going hard...
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LEARN HYPERFOCAL DISTANCE. I've said it so many times before it is impossible to shoot street without being an expert in this and the DOF scale on your lens.

http://www.dofmaster.com/hyperfocal.html

It's pretty confusing at first but once you grasp it you'll be amazed...

The jist of it is,

http://www.dofmaster.com/files/50_hyperfocal_focus.jpg

Set INFINITY (∞) to f/16 on the depth of field scale as above, then set your lens to f/16, and then boom, everything from beyond about a meter to 2 meters (depending on the focal length of your lens) will be perfectly sharp.

Nailing this technique and so long as there is enough light to shoot at f/16, means you don't even have to focus at all, just bring the camera to your eye or from your hip, and shoot.

BUT READ ALL OF IT AND UNDERSTAND IT!
Glad your getting into street photography. You should hit the beaches or go into the ghettos the east end or whatever... Get some grimy shit.

i will always try and shoot nothing longer than 1/125 handheld and especially to try capture something moving unless i am going to 100% pan with it...i try and shoot 1/250 to get no blur etc....but yer it pretty dark so even at f1.2 on 400 my cameras light meter said it would be mega underexposed....

haha my word...i mean this is probably as I have never studied or taken any classes in photography...but i have never even noticed that on my lenses mate....that makes my life about 10000000x easier haha....a 2 min read on it and it all makes sense...should hopefully make my life a tad easier!...safe for that for sure mate...well ive got another 5 rolls of film im gonna go out and shoot this weekend...so i should hopefully have some good ones in amongst them all...also what kinda shutter speed are you shooting on? as im around 1/250...i try and pan with the people but im hoping it wont be that blurred due to them being quite close on a 28mm lens and moving fairly fast through crowds sometimes....

also i tried the sunny 16 rule...and in london...its never sunny so i adapted likeit says and my cameras light meter wants none of it...it says it was always to dark....maybe i just need an actual sunny day to use it...

haha once again...im rocking that blue fuckin coat! i only wear this coat like once a week..and it always seem to be in central london when my woman has her camera just taking odd photos of me :/

You set your shutter speed to the closest to what your ISO is. So for example, for 400 film you set your shutter speed to 500th, for 100 film set to 125th. etc etc.
If it is overcast you should be shooting at around f/8 or below. Try to ignore the light meter, or even take the batteries out.
Try using your eyes and feeling the light and not letting your camera dictate your settings. Thats true photography in my opinion.

f/16 for clear sunny sky
f/8 for overcast with very faint shadow
f/5.6 for overcast with no shadows
f/4 and below for shade or inside shooting.

It's pretty easy.

These are nice, whatever your scanning technique/film type is I wanna know it. beautiful tones and colour.
Street photography is much tougher than it sounds. Good composition is really hard and often happens by accident.
One thing that I'm noticing you are doing is walking around taking photos of people just doing nothing, walking around, standing there, EXCEPT for the last one which is really nice.
You need to start noticing moments, the little every day things that happen in the street, capturing those is the ultimate. The one of the black guy trying to creep around people and nearly hitting the car mirror is nice and is exactly what I'm tlaking about. Just those little bits in street life you find annoying, trying to avoid people, walk past people, etc etc. You can see the annoyance in his face.
I'm not sure if you've seen this video or not, but I watch this atleast once a week for inspiration.
WATCHHH.

So i decided to try out street for a project and i gotta say its not really all that bad, some awkward moments but most people seemed like they just didn't give a shit, asking peoples a bitch though, got one "ok" and the picture was shit too.

ak, no spot meter on an xti, but he does have exposure compensation.

They're not terrible photos, they just feel a little sterile to me. I'm not sure what it is, perhaps the lack of grain. Did you try anything with the color versions?
I feel like they're a little too zoomed in, maybe try the kit lens next time at the wide end?

Have you tried asking them when the camera's already up and hitting the shutter before they answer? If you're still in DC you might get jumped, but I'm sure you're sticking to the nicer parts of town...

I'm not sure what a computer shitting the bed means, but just because your comp stopped working doesn't mean all your stuff is gone. Unless you know forsure your hard drive died, figure out what kind of hard drive you have, and buy the right hard drive enclosure.

ok i stumbled across an ad for a rangefinder... canon QL 17
ive been reading about it and its getting me really interested. i dont really think id care about the non replaceable/detachable lens...its speed actually drew me in to it.
anyway, my main concern is the ASA handling...

i dont get why theres a maximum which is 800
cant you just load a 1600 and still shoot at the lowest shutter speed? :/

kmcdon3960
11-10-2010, 06:20 AM
they were making those cameras in the 60's when there was no suchthing as 1600 film, 800 was considered ridicilously fast. I don't think that you're gonna be getting good results with 1600 unless you pull the development back to 800. You can look at an electro 35, some models go up to 1000asa, but don't outbid me on ebay since I'm looking for a spare :D

I think the electro is a much better camera then the ql17 overall... it's aperture priority instead of shutter priority, the meter is much more accurate (from what I hear.) and they're about half the price.

You'll be hyped at how solid it is. And just feeling the subtle quality of it.
If I were you I'd get the 35/1.2 over the 50/1.1 but thats up to you in the end.
For a 50 I'd wait until you can afford a 1st or 2nd model Summilux... I got one together with an M4 a while ago and it ended up being a steal.
Nothing I've bought has looked like the summilux does wide open. It's amazing.

Nice VA. I reckon you should do one head and shoulders and one full body for each person... Then put them side by side and present them as two portrait images together.
That would be cool and it would tell us more about the subject. I've always wanted to do this but always forget when I'm out shooting.

extreme paranoia? we just had a bunch of packages with look-alike bombs in them shipped to us. that to me was a test to see if we would catch it. I would be paranoid too. But hating on the ppl or the US for something their gov does is dumb. side note, that fashion is hella gay haha. nice pics but gay clothes. Got the spot shooting exclusively for some big bands. gonna but pocket wizards here soon i think. and another flash so i can put them at either side of the stage. wish shifty was still here for some tips as to where to put them

Ak you're pretty lucky to have been born in NZ. I'm not very proud of what america has done in the last 10 years, and if I was from somewhere else I'd hate us too. I agree with everyone's opinion on the States to some extent. Im from the States and am not proud of it at the moment. I think our main problem is due to a very high population of idiots. Lack of education is a huge issue. I realize this is a photography forum so Im done with political shit!
