24-70 2.8. Can't wait because ever since I went full frame I haven't been able shoot wide. Now I can ditch my old shitty kit lens and keep my 50 on my slower body, which works out perfectly because of the crop factor.

And Upstate, honestly you probably don't want critique from most people on here. How many other people do you think are shooting or have shot product? Not too many, at least seriously. The lighting in the controller shot is very nice, except for the chrome. I noticed you shot both those at f4.5, the first shot you might be able to get away with that but the you don't have enough dof for the watch shot, your bottom left corner is super soft. I also think the placement of the lid is a bit awkward. As far as studio stuff goes, lighting reflective surfaces is a bitch and requires a lot of thought and some advanced techniques. Keep at it

I already do. Shitty weather but I got a couple shots out last night and I was pretty pleased. The only problem now is that with my new grip and lens the camera is too heavy for my tripod.

I dig that last one lakim, think it would look better square crop without all that black on the bottom.

I'm not 100% on this, but I think the 2.8 cross type points are higher sensitivity and need more light to work properly?

Bought this and It helped but I wish there was more to it, especially for 13$$ http://www.gallery.matthewjordansmith.com/Ten-Ways-To-Use-One-Light-Source-Downloadable-Product-0107.htm

If I were this guy I would jump on the iTunes bandwagon and sell it for a $1.99. He would make so much more money and it's cheaper than 13. Good stuff regardless.

I would really love to start developing, I hear it's best to start off developing black and white then move to colour. I have no room for it though. :[

Looks good bread. You ever use a wacom tablet? If you're going to do retouching you should look for a used one on ebay. I got one and it's the best $50 I ever spent on photography stuff. You'll never look at the clone stamp tool the same way again.

||BREAD||

Thanks, I have an old wacom tablet and I got the bamboo for Christmas but I don't feel like I would use it. I don't find it any different than the mouse. I can use the mouse just as smoothly. Maybe you can explain further on why it's better because I haven't even used my bamboo yet. haha :/

kmcdon3960
02-09-2011, 03:22 PM
I have mine programmed so the buttons on the pen change the brush size
by default, the pen is pressure sensitive, so you can set a 50px brush, but if you lightly press it'll only be 1px, and if you press halfway it'll be 25px, and everything between. You can't do that with a mouse. It also is much much much much more precise.
I have my buttons programmed so that I can press one of the buttons and it switches to source mode, so you can hold the button and tap wherever you want to clone from, let go and you're cloning again.

I have the intuos3, I've never tried the bamboo, but I think you should really give it a shot with photoshop.

I've never used silver efex, but aliienskin exposure is a pretty sweet plugin for photoshop. It's got tons of vintage film stocks to choose from.

Nah never use the presets in silver efex but the grain tools and virtual red/orange/yellow lens filters are essential for anything black and white.

If your using Nikon I'd just save a bit more for the nikkor 85 1.4. Sigma lenses feel cheap and are built badly. (I know this from experience) The nikon is tough as fuck and trust me you won't be wanting to sell this lens so in the long run you will save money not having to sending it back to sigma to get repairs done etc etc.
I can't speak for canon lenses but all canon shit feels cheaper to me than nikon gear anyway really.

It's by far my favourite lens I have ever used... flick the 60mm macro photography is for toys.
If I were you I'd sell the 50 1.4 and the 60mm for the nikkor 85. The 85 is great for everything. If I were you I'd own a wide lens, eg, 18 or 21mm, a long lens like the 85, and cheap f./1.8 or f/2 manual focus 50 for the rare occasion that you'd need it. These go for like $60 on ebay.

Are you shooting full frame? cos remember the 85 will become nearly 130mm on a cropped sensor camera. Thats quite long. If your using a 50 on a cropped sensor camera then you are effectively shooting 75mm anyway... so why an 85 in that case?

Kao.Ali
02-17-2011, 07:26 PM
I shoot canon. they only make a 85 1.8 and 1.2 (which is totally out the question because its 2 Gs) I'm aware of the crop factor (I have a 7D). I'm renting a 135mm f2L and borrowing a 85 f1.8 for a concert this weekend to see which focal range feels better to me.
I'm getting the lens mostly for stage shit because I use my 50 for portraits. and yes, the 60mm was the first lens I bought and I never use it besides to take pics of weed.
I own a 10-20 4-5.6 and a 30mm 1.4 (from sigma which really isnt all that bad IMO).
Your right about most canon glass feeling cheap. anything besides their L lenses and a few primes don't inspire a lot of confidence in me when I hold them. But my boss shoots canon and has all sorts of pricey glass I get to play with as long as I shoot canon too.

kmcdon3960
02-17-2011, 07:49 PM
what sort of concert are you going to, and how close will you be getting?

I ask this because I find that closeups of people on stage are extremely boring for me to look at. I prefer closer wider shots. Of course if it's a big show and you can't get close you'll probably have to go long. I have the 10-20 sigma also and I'm actually pretty happy with it's build quality. It feels better then my non-L canon stuff. It's the only sigma I own, but I've heard it's really a gamble with them. Maybe I just got one of the good ones.

There's some great m42 85's that are stupid cheap like the jupiter that will fit on your canon, but it's going to be almost impossible to focus that at a dark show unless you change your focus screen.

tl;dr: try go get as close as possible and ditch the tele's unless you absolutely need them.

.A.K.4.7.
02-17-2011, 07:50 PM
Maybe you need a 70-200 2.8? good to have zoom range for concerts since you are mostly in cramped photographer pits and cant move around too much.

Oh and PS, clients usually want tight shots of the lead singers etc... easier to place in their magazines etc rather than large wide shots where the subjects are quite small in the overall composition...

I have a 70-200 2.8 is at my disposal. Its a great lens but too big for indoor stage stuff without a tripod. I mostly use a 70-200 2.8 and a 24-70 2.8 for stage stuff unless lighting is really an issue and need the extra 2 stops of light.

Plus it'd be nice to own some more glass instead of borrowing it all the time. Def not fucking with Jupiter stuff for anything moving decently fast though.
IDK what AK's talking about as far as sigma. yes, some of their lenses are crappy, but they have some gems too. I love my 10-20 and my 30 1.4 does me okay too.

and kc, I've already made the mistake of trying to do stage work with a wide lens. everything looks tiny. the 10-20 makes people look like ants.

I think he's probably referring to older sigma with the red ring, that shit was junk. The newer stuff with the gold ring is much better.

The 10-20 is useless unless you're shooting landscapes or shoving it in people's faces. I wouldn't reccomend it for stage work. The 30mm would be good if you can get close enough.

This was shot with the 10-20 @ 10mm, like a foot in front of her. And it's cropped.

Hey man, I understand that most people don't like america because of the wars and political strongarming, but it doesn't have anything to do with Christchurch having an earthquake. I know how you feel though, in 1994 my aunt and uncle lost their house in LA because of an earthquake, the had to move back here because they had nowhere to go. That's the same uncle that was in the pentagon when the plane hit.

On another note, I've been using the 35mm more then anything lately. I haven't had a chance to develop anything from it, but it hasn't really come off the camera since I put it on.

i would think nikon has it... but canon has "picture styles" which you can change with different settings (standard, landscape, portrait etc) basically in camera processing
you also get 3 custom settings of your liking (besides the presets being customizable as well)
with the 3 custom settings, you can make your own with a software.. or go online and find other ppls own presets.
i found an Agfa RSX II 100 that i now substitute as my standard.
also a Velvia 50

anyway, i think id much rather get a voigtlander before i even consider this

Bah. Any post processing should be exactly that... post. Cameras should record whatever is infront of them and any changes should be made if needed afterwards. Film modes are stupid IMO. Just buy velvia if you want velvia.

i get you, but if you do happen to shoot jpg instead of raw, like it or not, youre gonna be using those presets (most likely standard if you dont ever tweak that part of your camera)
i do shoot raw 98% of the time but if i just want a quick process, ill just use the canon software instead of photoshop. itll keep the preset(if i want to) instead of it being completely raw/flat.

Any film heads on here want to share scanning technicques? When I scan, I drop the contrast way down, it doesn't look nice, but it retains as much information as possible. Make sure you don't drop it down too far, gotta find a happy medium:

http://images.rapidhate.org/d/6194-1/edit1.jpg

Then, I do all my curves and contrast in photoshop, and remove any scratches or spots on the film using a wacom tablet and clone stamp:

http://images.rapidhate.org/d/6191-1/final.jpg

And for anybody who says that zeiss lenses aren't good, check out the 100% crop from the original scan:

I look at it this way, you spend $2500 on a top of the line canon lens, a lens that is made with special glass and has thousands of hours of research and development into it, and now you've got a piece of shit glass thing on the front of it. Think like this, you're gonna go bang your old lady with a condom on, sure it'll work fine, but it's much better if you take that sucker off and hit it raw.

edit: it's one thing if you're using a polarizer or a red/yellow (for black&white) but uv's are pretty pointless these days, modern lenses are built much better and withstand alot more abuse. Hell, I've cleaned my L shit with a tshirt before, never hurt it.

Another thing that filters can do is cause reflections, here's a picture I took years ago, before I knew any better. I had a UV filter on the lens, and it caused the lights from the mojo 13 sign to reflect on the bottom of the pic. It took me a long time to figure out why they were coming out like that, ever since then I ditched my UV filters. Apparently I didn't know anything about white balance at the time either :D

I don't to be honest.
I'm not getting anywhere near as much work as I want. I get an occasional high paying job that can last me a few weeks and I'm living on that by the skin of my teeth after paying 200$ a week rent etc.
I basically have just marketed myself hard, website, facebook page, doing lots of free work if it gives you professional photos to add to the portfolio. I don't do any free shit any more though.
It's all about looking professional, (which is mainly why I spent so much on a D3S) and LOOKING as if you get heaps of work when in reality you don;'t. It's all word of mouth.
Takes a while to get to that stage and I've got a long way to go.

Any film heads on here want to share scanning technicques? When I scan, I drop the contrast way down, it doesn't look nice, but it retains as much information as possible. Make sure you don't drop it down too far, gotta find a happy medium:

Then, I do all my curves and contrast in photoshop, and remove any scratches or spots on the film using a wacom tablet and clone stamp:

And for anybody who says that zeiss lenses aren't good, check out the 100% crop from the original scan:

If that lens is actually yours, for god's sake take the filter off!!!!

This is interesting. What scanner/software are you using? I'm gonna try this.

haha nah man i wouldnt ever...i was just like upset but mad...she was nearly in tears over the phone to me...when she bought it back to me she was nearly crying as well haha...we nearly had a group cry XD ....i mean the film might not actually be fucked as its only the last 4-5 exposures which might of been exposed as light shouldnt of traveled through the film on the roll....but meh gonna get it developed tomorrow...

So i need some advice. Should i sell the d7000 seeing as i can prolly get like 1300 for it easy. And take that cash and get a d700, or just chill with the d7000 and get nice glass. It's a sick camera and i can use lenses on both my cameras

It was from work but it will never happen again hana. Or at least not for a long time. Nikon gives me deals tho. I might get a sb900 and a battery grip. They give me a d700 body for 2000. Not too bad

Hehe I still don't understand why you want FF so badly. The D7000 out preforms the old D3 sensors anyway these days and it's DX.

to be completely honest, after playing with it for a bit, its not too much better than my d40. obviously it has more mp, better iso, video, focus points and build lol. but pic wise its the same. but i am deff not disappointed. the way its built is nice as shit and it makes things a lot easier. im pretty happy with it. cant wait to actually get out tomorrow to use it

what are you exactly expecting from the d700?
im sure under normal shooting conditions (sunny etc) the crop body wont be much different from the full frame
i thought we all already know that its the lens (and the person holding the camera) that make the difference in image quality
