I fucking hate your pictures Immoral. Really, I didn't know it was so easy to really mess up a macro shot... If your gonna do macro, try to have something semi interesting happening behind the main focus, so you're not just like, oh, it's fucking bearded dragon, but, oh, it's a bearded dragon, and that's a sick ass landscape behind it. Your shots are uninteresting at best.

I've just always wanted to have what I am actually taking a photo of to be the main interest in the picture. I understand what you mean about the uninteresting backgrounds, but I don't move around my subject and such, as most of them are wildlife.

08-11-2009, 02:14 AM
Got the mop paint tonight, and that shot is sick. I like how the shallow depth sends your attention straight to the frog.
the first one is alright, it would be better if the sun would be flaring though. The edges of the statue look abit photoshopped also. The overall feel is pretty cool.
In the second one, the leaves look surreal, so does the statue again. The leaves have like a black outline :s
third one would be insane if you cut off the picture at the bottom (abit less asphalt) and if there wasnt that one branch hanging from the left tree. It kind ruins the composition of the shot for me. Itd be really nice in black and white!
The next one would be sick in better quality
I get what you were trying to do in the butterfly one, but it looks too shaky and not enough focus on the butterfly. (doesnt look crispy enough)
I dont really get the last one or what you were trying to do with it..
Tried my best to help you out man, just my 2 cents.

Thats it, I'm buying a leica.
Anyone out there that knows anything about them, I can't decide between an older original german M4, or a newer canadian built M4-P for similar prices.
I feel like if I'm buying a leica it should be a german hand built real deal, rather than a machine pressed canadian version, but the canadian versions are newer and in better nick.

i suggest the m4-p. the original m4 is more of a collectors item. it's a beautiful camera and German made, but most of them are on their way out (shutter death, advance failure). with original m4's you can also run into viewfinder problems like fog and fungus, both of which are expensive and a real pain to fix. m4-p's don't resell as well, but are much newer, if not totally new. leica's really come down to ergonomics, size, and glass. the m4-p is a better choice, you just have to buy glass that's in good condition and be willing to pay over 1500 USD per lens. also note that m4's and most other leica's, don't have a meter built in.
i'm privy to leica CLs and leica M3s. CL's because their relatively inexpensive, have a built in light meter, and are really small. M3's last forever, work great, and are just beautiful cameras.

M3 just looks too old for my tastes (I admit I am a gear nerd and care about these things).
M4-P looks like the best choice, even though it's not a real hand built leica.
I think the one (and possibly only) lens I buy for it will be the voigtlander 28mm f/2

i really just suggest getting a normal lens or a 40mm. 28mm is pretty wide for a prime, too wide actually. you won't be able to shoot portraits or anything candid without shoving the camera directly in someone's face.
and what's the point of buying a leica if you aren't going to use a leica lens? leica lenses is the only reason people are willing to spend 3-5000 dollars on leica bodies (well atleast one of the most sensible ones).

Might meet you in the middle and get a 35mm then. I find 50mm reaches a little too far for me.

those where all freshwater storm relief and culverts....but i do a lot of actual sewers in central london, usually they are the best to have a wander around, theres so many! But you get a lot of storm relief drains in London, which lead into the thames. They are overflows for the sewers. I was supposed to meet a drainer in sydney but he flopped on me. Was hoping to see a lot more while i was there. But yer we should of! :P
Theres a lot of problems with london sewers and drains. As the thames is fuckin tidal. Rises from 0.5m to around 9m in a matter of 2-3 hours. Comes in mega quick. The river fleet is dangerous, the main chamber is fuckin huge, fills to the brimm in about an hour. Nearly 10m tall. If you get stuck, your fucked :)
Monkey you got some hearty fucking spots to shoot, killllller flicks!
niiiiiiiiiiice one.
cheers mate, what research gets ya really...and countless hours searching...you must have some large sewers/storm drains over in NZ, same as australia, they are everywhere and usually big!

The camera never leaves my hands, it does get a bit covered in alcohol most nights, but a clean solves that, D300's are weather proof so I assume she'll be alright. I just keep it out of dangerous areas like mosh pits. I am pretty good at holding my alcohol so even when Im wasted I'm still very conscious of the camera, you have to be, its like holding a real nice car in your hands $$$ wise.

nikon d5000, sb600 flash, 55-200mm lense
the only thing i was disapointed about is with the creative lighting option on the sb600, its not cabable of becoming wireless with the d5000 unless you buy the extra shit, oh well...
first time ever using one, crits or feedback are more than apreciated
are you sure? you can't use the pop up flash as a trigger for the sb-600 in commander mode?

day 2 and 3 with the d5000
got a question about the exposure on the camera...it ranges from split seconds to 30 seconds...and then the bulb feature, basicaly its however long you hold the button down, but the problem with that is holding it down can sometimes shake the tripod...any way to get a longer exposure than 30s? need some help on this

what should i do about that?
when i go into the white balance menu and select another setting, it brings me to like a color chart
PERVERTO
09-02-2009, 02:15 AM
Well in the program I use, there is an eyedropper option in the white balance menu, and you simply click the eyedropper on an area of the photo that should be neutral grey in colour, and it adjusts the white balance to suit, gets it wrong sometimes, but its usually right with a bit of fiddling.
I use apple aperture and im pretty sure adobe lightroom has one too.

Not to be a dick, but the mask is a little sloppy. And if the car is in focus, shouldn't the antenna be in focus?
The water macros are cool, but you might want to play around with the lights to get rid of that hotspot in the second shot.

Nice shots, personally hate photoshopping blurs into images.
also try a neutral density filter for the waterfall shots.

shifted, when you shoot a night shot for too long, the black sky can become lighter, and camera sensors can't handle that shit very well, to get rid of the pixelation try upping the contrast or black levels to make the sky blacker, while upping the shadows so as not to go too dark. try using a shorter shutter speed, usually 25-30 seconds is enough unless your shooting in absolute pitch black. film is much better for night shots, as film renders what the camera sees perfectly, and digital is still a long way off that.
an example of a night shot ive taken, these shots used about 2 minutes exposure, without a cable release, and me just flashing a flash. in reality, this scene was absolute pitch black, that beautiful sky was created from the city lights, that were not there in real life! not saying these are amazing, but just illustrating a point, that people with cable releases for some reason feel like they have to use 5min+ exposures, which can often just make the shots look shit.

also, the thing about looking like you have the crosshatch filter on, that is caused by using a small aperture (like f/22.) what you're seeing is where the aperture blades overlap, it's called a starburst. I would try backing it off to f/11 or so, you may get sharper pictures that way also.

is this the same at larger apertures? those night shots i took have that similar pixelation in the sky, yet im pretty sure i shot that in f/2.8, being the amateur that I was at the time. can you like, allow your brain to be picked g?

I really like that last one, minus the pole.
As far as the 'starburst' thing goes, yes your aperture will dictate what shape they take. I don't necessarily agree that shooting f11 will give you sharper images though, every lens is different. Its all about trying and error, and knowing your equipment, you play around you'll find the sweet stop. With night stuff, I personally will do everything I can to block out and avoid light coming directly at the lens. Makes exposing a hell of a lot easier.

perv: lots of lenses react differently to direct light in dark scenes. I don't like to shoot wide open at night because it seems to make any lights in the scene harsh. This first shot was with a sigma 10-20 @ f/6.3 and the second was with the kit lens 18-55 at f9
