You realize the thump sound that occurs when you cock the shutter means the camera is working fine, its if the thump doesn't occur that there would be a problem. This confused me for ages.


My Electro 35 GSM turned up with a film rewind spool that didnt stick down, so if you turned the camera upside down, the film rewind spool would just flop out, so the film wouldn't be held in place. It still works, but I have to make sure the camera doesn't get flipped upside down. My MG-1 simply doesn't work, the electrics are buggered. If I were you, I'd buy a Russian Zorki rangefinder, they have better lenses and are built (slightly) better. They are cheap as fuck and have good lenses, so long as you get the one with the Jupiter 50/2.

Perfect for gigs, cos it has one of the fastest flash sync speeds of any camera, even the hugely expensive pro rigs. This means that with flash, you can shoot up to 1/500th of a second and freeze movement. Even my D300 has a maximum of 1/250th of a second.

Megapixel count does not matter unless you are printing your photographs poster size. Which I doubt you would be.

this allows you to use your flash off your camera, so you can sit it down in the corner at one of your gigs and get some good lighting. The best purchase I ever made. Flashes are quite expensive but they are very worth it.

No, not on a D40. The D40 doesn't have commander mode I don't think. I may be wrong.

And besides, I find it annoying having to use the pop up flash to trigger the other flashes, it's often not what you want in terms of lighting and its unreliable.

The good news is that my film developing was spot on, and the meter exposed everything well. The bad news is I didn't get any very interesting shots, and the camera double exposed and overlapped about 5 frames (the good ones, of course.)

I found when I was down south with my D80 in the snow that it froze up, the shutter did not fire and I got error messages. Apparently the more expensive your camera is the better it will hold up, my D300 is designed to be used in harsh conditions as it is weather and dust sealed etc.

For cleaning your lens, I just give it a huff and wipe it with some soft felt in the circular motion moving outwards from the middle. Eventually it buffs any marks out. Also, buy a UV filter to put on the front of your lens permanently. This will protect the lens glass itself and is easier to clean.

How did you get that halo effect around the lights?. Thats kinda what i was trying to do, make the background dark with the lights the only real color.
I really don't like how you cropped it though. It slightly takes away the effect of the picture

D3200 @ 6400 again. Nothing quite like shooting flashless in a dark basement and still getting fast shutter speeds. This was from a show in nyc last night, had to break out the slr for this one. I put a roll of neopan 1600 through the yashica, but the film is still drying. Ordering a scanner friday.

but there was way too much negative space iin the photo making it less interesting to look at, your eyes automaticaly jump to the street with absolutely nothing nice going on and then it just kinda ruines it
...as far as the halo goes with the light...get creative, photoshop is a marvelous program...fuck lightroom, sorry to anyone here who swears on lightroom but prefer the plain editor on photoshop

mess with the aperature and shutter speed, since perverto doesnt know how bright the sky is, you get to have a little fun learning the ways of your camera

if its bright i go for like an f3 or f4 and a quick shutter speed, it all depends on if you have things in the foreground you wanna attract attention to, and many other aspects as well

Thats to do with exposure. meter for the sky, then meter for the ground, and meet in the middle. Look it up on the net, it's technique not a setting on your camera.

I'm taking a photography course in highschool and ive done research on how much id be making as a photographer and the possibilities of freelancing vs photojournalism and such.
right now, i have my mind set on a nikon d60 (the course im taking uses d70's but i cant find one anywhere, but ive heard d60's are cheaper and give you pretty much the same results) because 1) its a relatively cheap camera and 2) its similar to the camera ive been using.

but right now, im not sure if taking post-secondary school for photography is worth it?
would i be better off finding a different career and keeping photography as a hobby?
or maybe even just teach myself and talk with more experienced photographers.

If you know nothing about photography whatsoever, a photog course could be good. Otherwise, bugger it. If I were you I'd ask professional photographers if you can assist them, and learn from them.

Right now I have 3 introduction courses, DISA (Digital Imaging and Studio Arts), Photography and Film. It's pretty dope, cause they explain to you all the fields you can go into with each of those intro classes and give you a taste of whats gonna come in the next semesters if you stick with that. In the second semester you choose one intro class to specialize into for the next year and a half. Pretty dope, sucks I dont really enjoy my photo class though, my teachers kinda cocky. Really though, it doesn't matter. Nikons and canons are both good. I think the kit lens on the d40 is a little better then the canon 18-55 IS though. But there's also the thing with the d40 not having an internal focus motor not letting you autofocus all lenses. I think that's pretty retarded, since the rebels can use all canon ef lenses ever made.

nah, you'll be able to autofocus, because the kit lens has the motor in the lens. There are certian lenses that require the motor to be in the camera, those won't focus.

The histories of Nikon and Canon are very different.

Back in the 70's and 80's, Nikon manual focus cameras were the undisputed camera choice of professional photographers. Then in the early 80's, auto focus was invented. Canon and Nikon both chose very different directions for their auto focus technology. Nikon decided they did not want to fuck over their huge customer base of pro's by making them have to sell every single one of their old manual focus lenses in exchange for new auto focus ones, so because of this EVERY single nikon lens since the 1950's mounts perfectly on your camera. They chose a system where an autofocus motor was placed inside the camera, not inside the lens.

This means that it is possible to buy great old lenses for your nikon on ebay for next to no $$$. During the same time in the 80's canon took the other path, and basically fucked over their customer base by completely changing their camera design into the EOS system, where the auto focus engine was not inside the camera but on each lens. So basically every photographer that was shooting canon before the 1980's had to sell all their shit and rebuy everything from scratch. As the canon auto focus system was faster and better (at the time), most sports and photo journalists of the time switched to canon, and because no-one wants to have to sell all their shit and switch again, they have held the share of the pro market ever since. Plus most fags see a pro photographer shooting canon and feel like they have to shoot canon if they want to be in the game. EOS is fine, but it means you can only buy canon lenses made since the 1980's for your EOS camera. (Lame) I love shooting my 1970's 50mm manual focus lenses, they have a real retro feel to the images.

Canon people wince when they see you with a Nikon and vice versa, I wince at both now that I've got a Leica, it's just hotheaded fanboy syndrome.

Your D40 is better than their canon especially for what you do, because of its far superior flash sync speed perfect for freezing motion in low light with your flash. Look it up on the internet if you don';t know what flash sync is about, or I suppose I could explain it if you want. I personally think Canon rebels feel cheap in the hand next to the entry level Nikons, and the menus and changing settings are so needlessly overcomplicated. Rubbish. But thats me, get your D40.
