Rise in highway graffiti costs Ga. $150,000 a year costly problem at getting more common and costly

Graffiti painted this week on interstate signs along the Downtown Connector is part of a larger, metrowide problem that costs the state more than $150,000 a year, transportation officials said Tuesday.

The most recent vandalism — on overpasses where the signs are directly above traffic lanes on I-75/I-85 — moves the artwork beyond a mere eyesore to a dangerous act that concerns the state Department of Transportation.

"Those signs aren't built for climbing around on, particularly in the dead of the night, which is apparently when they are doing this," said DOT spokesman David Spear.

"They are going to fall and get hurt, or they're going to drop something and cause an accident," he said. "Then, it ceases to be a prank and becomes a very serious offense."

Already, the "tagging," which has increased in recent months, is an expensive problem for the DOT.

A DOT crew is assigned full time to removing the graffiti, Spear said. The crew, working from a boom truck, occasionally has to shut interstate lanes to do the repair work, which involves removing or painting over the graffiti, or, in extreme cases, completely replacing the sign.

"It's been going on to some extent for years, but the significant stuff started this summer," Spear said. "We saw a significant increase in drawings — gang symbols, whatever they are — on metro area signs."

While much of the graffiti in recent months has been painted on the backs of "dozens and dozens" of road signs, this week's vandalism was to the face of at least three signs along a 5-mile stretch of the Connector, Spear said.

"When they're doing the front of the signs, it becomes an even more significant issue, because they're defacing traffic control devices," he said.
