If you really have a passion for arts and want to make a career from a skill you've obtained on the street then I recommend getting some schooling to back it up on your resume, not many firms/studios will hire a writer straight off the street.

me too. but i dont really know how much it is/ has helped me, but hey no knowledge is bad knowledge :) i figure all graff is is advertising for yourself, so instead of a billboard or a news paper ad you do a bomb or tag :P
yeah, graff is advertising in a sense, but it also undermines commercial advertisement at the same time. Taking typography has helped me realize how closely graff is related to traditional type use. I've learned a lot about color theory, and also design/compostion in school.

i started paying alot more attention to letter structure, but i didnt know if it was because of school, or me getting better a graff, or both. being in advertising wouldnt be that bad, i dont htink i can see myself doing it tho. but i guess i dont have much expectation for myself :( silly low self esteemed me

unfortunately there's no art major at my community college. i'm also doing the gen ed thing like name said. sadly, i've taken almost all the art courses they offer.
it's the one area of schooling that appeals to me.

Both sides of my family have backrounds with artists/painters. Both of my aunts on my fathers side are artists. One of them worked for some big college as an art major teacher. And my other aunt just does landscaoes and portraits and lives off of that, but i guess she's a "stranger" ive only met her once and her and my dad dont talk. My mom can paint really good. and my dad, well he cant draw a straight line with a ruler.
I've been taking art classes sinice i was little, and i go to a vocational high school now (junior year), and major in Art, So one week i got regular classes, then next week i go to my shop, and well, dont do much, just sit and sketch in my blackbook and roam the forums.
I guess its helped. Mostly with just being able to know how to draw, and pencil control. But deffinatley color schemes, and perspective and 3d and shit like that, since they teach you all basic drawing your freshman year.
heres something I whipped out a few days ago. (not great but whatever)

i could see how an art major would help, but then again i like the fact that i can do what i can, with no formal schooling. i would like to see a comparison of non college hippies to art schoolers. posts of pieces that show all the work. i would start the thread but mine always get closed.
oh, and that digital graff looks like shit. i'm sick of ppl saying, "i did this real quick, it's not great but i could do better if i take my time"...no it looks like shit because you didn't pull a pencil and pen out your mom's desk drawer and learn to draw. be creative, be, be creative. toy.

u cannot teach graffiti in a school, the only school for graffiiti is the STREET.
i dont think art classes help, you need the natural talent to start with and then develop.
singing classes cant make everybody be able to sing!- if you get my point!

Major art help a fucking lot 2 understand the matters, supports, mediums...
music and visual art are not same, and u can get a decent talent by practice.
i dont do visual art, i did drama at a lower level but, i think you need some natural ability to be able to draw. i wouldnt know what you do in major art compared to what i do, art a-level.- maybe your older?

im in AP digital art, adn im going for major in communication sciences and minoring in digital art...but i think graffiti is different htan the other forms of art, because letter structure is not taught in art calss, so you need to learn some htings on your own, but one with a natural art talent(such as lust, a graphis art major i believe) does have an advantage over someone else, say you

majoring in "art" is a waste of time if youre at a normal college or university seeing as most of the art departments are complete jokes.
but if youre going to an actual accredited art school its a whole different animal.
trust me
if youre serious about what you want to do with art and want to focus on it, art school is definitely worth going to.
you usually find out that youre doing alot of shit wrong when you actually take a class.
E-Terror
04-11-2008, 10:03 AM
oh, also
if youre serious about your artwork and do have some skill, but arent sure about what you really want to do, going to an art school is an invaluable resource of information and experiences on other forms of art you might not have even known existed.
i went into art school thinking i was gonna major in photo.
mid way through my first semester i realized it wasent my shit and discovered printmaking which i very very quickly took a deep interest and liking to.
if i were ever to go back to UArts, it would be for printmaking

I've been drawing all my life and I get told a lot that I'm very skillful.
I might go to college for some art shit but I'm not to sure yet.
Does it help me with my writing?
Well starting off, I already know the basics of drawing. All I need to do is apply it to my graffiti style and I'll be good.

honestly, unless the person telling you youve got drawing skills can draw well themselves, theyre just being nice or dont know any better.
if you are concidering art school, be prepared for criticism.
