looking good atlok, personally if it were my piece i would break up some of those lines to make the letters more distinguishable. like what i did with the bottom part of my s in my post closer to the top of this page. also im really not feeling the random bar on the top right of your s, its really throwing off the flow

capo- just keep sticking to simples and you will progress eventually, dont worry about coloring so much just get your letters down first

hint, you have the right idea for where to go with your letters. some of that stuff is really really close. good colors. but you should really just go back and do some simpler, straight up horizontal styles. and then advance the colors and extensions.

Okay, I just started getting into writing this week. I've loved graffiti for a long, long time, and I've been an artist for longer, but never using this stuff. I'm an old guy compared to a lot of you, and it feels a little weird to be getting all stoked about bombing the trains by my house, but it's cool.

I know these are rough, but you have to start somewhere. Here are my first two attempts. I read some of the early posts here, and I remember one guy saying that flow is everything. I've tried to keep that in mind, but obviously it's going to take practice.

you really need to work on your letter flow....its all messed up..i mean you have curves on the R n E...but non anywhere else...you woud of easily put a curve on the top part of the C ( talkin bout middle pencil piece in bottom flick )...all your M's are far too big aswell..again..adding more nonflowness...i see you put you never did simples...well maybe you shud start rocking a couple from time to time cos you have no flow what so ever...nothing jumps out at me as original or different..its all lettering iv seen before...the top blue simple is pretty nice...but again..shit like the E..iv seen it over and over..yeah its a simple...but still..add some originality to it....look at REVOKs simples...he manages to add fucking shit load of originality to his.

i like the second one, but maybe a few too many arrows.
and the first ones shadow on the U and H look out of place cause there is none in the gaps.

I know what you mean. I thought it looked weird too, but I thought since the whole design is kind of tipped backwards and the U and H are pretty straight-on, you wouldn't see shadow on those. Maybe I should have the shadows on on the U going from the left and the on the H going from the right...I'll give it some more tinkering and see what happens.

yeah man thts pretty good for your first couple drawings. but yeah i think for now you should really just work on letter structure and how the letters fit and look good togeather. but yeah keep at it.

this is the very first sketch i've done trying to incorporate things like arrows, bits and connectors. extended a bit on the letters as well. I realize my letter structuring isn't the greatest, but i think they flow together pretty well. i was proud it came out so well. and yes, there is a bit of biting in this one, but we're imitators by nature and i think that's the best way to learn and find your own style. i didn't directly copy tho. gonna work on figuring out a color scheme next.

Nez- Yea, i went way over the top with the arrows, specially that extra one on top of the W. I love hip hop mostly 'underground'....what are you using to fill? I see no stroke marks on the fable it's sick.

Shame- the fill/outline is crap, but it looks like your were doin a quickie. Structure looks tip top. Good job...erase that pencil!!

I can feel ya roa, I was purposely trying to go over my head with the sketch...Trying out new things. What would you change about it? Just too complex for my level or what? Totally agree about the throwie. Its crap. Meant to be a bit lumpy on the outline but it's hard as fuck to do freehand!!! In fact I can't duplicate it all in one shot hahah. Gotta say I love my 'e', reminds me of a little happy asian man.

Thanks, man. It helps when you've got a lot of years of drawing other stuff under your belt. ;) I've seen other people on here suggest that new writers stick to block letters until they get it down to a science.

I did a new one tonight during my daughters' dance class (which was funny because I tried to think of what I would say if one of the moms there asked what I was drawing..."Oh, just some graffiti I'm planning on throwing up on a train car later tonight"), and I tried some new stuff. I probably put more detail into it than I would be able to with an actual piece at this point, but it's the ideas that matter, right?

Actually Atlok, it's an E, not a B. I tried to reverse it like the R and slant the corners. I'll try it the other way. I know sometimes reversing the letters works, but obviously this isn't the case here.

I looked up Scage. You're right. He's got some awesome stuff that's not terribly complex (compared with a lot of the other stuff I've seen). Proof that sometimes less is more. I'm assuming you're familiar with BooyaBase...http://www.fotolog.com/booyabase . He's got some of his/their recent work up there, and it's pretty rad.

There is a writer here in Minneapolis named IMPEACH. He (or she...dunno) basically draws a square for each letter, and then paints the letters in a serif-style font with dots in the center (like the skeleton of the letter...don't know how else to describe it). Some of his trains are in the Minneapolis thread on 12oz. Prophet if you ever want to check it out. It's very unusual, but it's uniquely his.

Atlok, speaking as an artist, I really like the style you used on this. I can't tell what it says, but I really like it. Smooth lines, and your colouring (as far as both technique and colour choice) is very good. Very easy to look at.

Thrice, I like it. Is it just me, or does it look a little bit like the logo for those Airheads candy things? Can't wait to see the coloured version!

Haze, on the top, I like the middle one the best. I also like the blue one with the orange. I don't know so much about the style and hook-ups or whatever, but I know what appeals to me. Nicely done.

you really need to work on your letter flow....its all messed up..i mean you have curves on the R n E...but non anywhere else...you woud of easily put a curve on the top part of the C ( talkin bout middle pencil piece in bottom flick )...all your M's are far too big aswell..again..adding more nonflowness...i see you put you never did simples...well maybe you shud start rocking a couple from time to time cos you have no flow what so ever...nothing jumps out at me as original or different..its all lettering iv seen before...the top blue simple is pretty nice...but again..shit like the E..iv seen it over and over..yeah its a simple...but still..add some originality to it....look at REVOKs simples...he manages to add fucking shit load of originality to his.

Yeah, manga is pretty overrated. It's annoying that, if you go to the drawings section on Deviant Art, 90% of what you see is manga, and a lot of it is poorly-drawn manga at that.

Here's a re-do of my last piece. I've un-reversed the E and moved the Y out a little more.

Good call on the manga, too. It's not that it's bad, it's just that it's everywhere. I mean, you can't turn on Cartoon Network it seems without seeing something anime on it. I like anime and manga just as much as the next guy, but I think at this point the market is a little over-saturated.

Put that C in the first throw (because the C in the first one might look like an R to some people...and frankly I'd rather be a chump than a rhump ;)) and I think you'll be golden. Maybe put more of a face on the P ghostie so it looks more...Casper-ish...I dunno.
