press reasonably hard and move with quick fluid motions you should be alright then, also don't use paper that is too thick, i find it makes markers bleed more, I don't like traditional sketchbook paper it is too thick I prefer thinner paper

I use a sketchbook with 135g weight paper, not too thin not to thick and not gritty at all, I get them from WHSmiths in the UK. £2.99 50 pages get through about 1 a month
