View Full Version : Screen Printing/Silk-Screen Printing
This is the thread where you shall discuss anything screen-print/silk-screen related.
Enjoy!
How To Screen Print.
http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2037/168/96/796795605/n796795605_1846959_3802753.jpg
First you cover up any part of the screen you don't want printed with tape and cardboard, this will make clean up easier.
http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2037/168/96/796795605/n796795605_1846960_907623.jpg
I recommend you get some acetate and tape one side (the oposite side of the part of the screen where you're printing on) later on you'll see why.
http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2037/168/96/796795605/n796795605_1846961_1406344.jpg
Also, if you're a cheap mofo like me and cannot afford adhesive spray just tape a piece of tape sticky side up so that can hold your sticker.
http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2037/168/96/796795605/n796795605_1846962_6276072.jpg
So now with a piece of cardboard or a pencil mix your ink and apply it on top of your design and not directly.
http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2037/168/96/796795605/n796795605_1849842_4133219.jpg
Now with very little pressure scoop the ink across your image, make sure most of it is covered.
http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2037/168/96/796795605/n796795605_1849843_3048093.jpg
Now the way to get a clean print is to use the edge of the squeege to press down and not with the bottom of the squeege, with the bottom you'll get a sloppy print and with the edge you can carry all the ink and quickly move it back to where you first applied the ink.
http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2037/168/96/796795605/n796795605_1849844_6981416.jpg
I printed on the acetate so that it will help me center my sticker into where the screen is going to be printing. So before you print eye-center your sticker and then put the acetate on top and make sure it's in place.
http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2037/168/96/796795605/n796795605_1849845_675585.jpg
Now start printing.
http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2037/168/96/796795605/n796795605_1849846_7524834.jpg
Usually prints take 3-5 minutes to dry on paper or vinyl.
http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2037/168/96/796795605/n796795605_1849855_3639993.jpg
When your done with a piece of thick paper (usually bussines cards work swell) take out all the ink left on the screen and put it back on your ink bottle.
http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2037/168/96/796795605/n796795605_1849856_4264465.jpg
Now with the tape and cardboard method you just take that out and leave it to dry so that you can use it on your next print. And now thatll make cleaning a lot easier.
http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2037/168/96/796795605/n796795605_1849857_1967726.jpg
To clean up just get some vinyl solvent and paper towels, wet a block of paper towel with your solvent and wash around the left over ink until most of it is gone. Make sure the top is clean then there should be a bit at the bottom of the screen that you can clean up with another block of paper towel with solvent and apply a bit of pressure to get the ink off. After that get some piece of cloth (a sock in the picture haha) and wash off more left over ink until its done and then you can just wash it with water to get the solvent off.

Wired use Google.
What are other ways to wash out a screen after using it without using emulsion remover?
How long should it take to burn a screen with direct sunlight?
Is it easy to apply emulsion with a squeege? Or is it really hard unless you have an emulsion spreader thing?
How longish does a bottle of ink last sticker wise?
Do you apply the emulsion to both sides of the screen?
Anybody that can help me out here, thanks :D

Dont know
No get a scoop coater.
Not sure, but if your not on vinyl use arcylic paint.
emulsion only goes on the back.

1) -
2)Give it 45 minutes to an hour.
3) should be easy just try to apply the same amount of pressure on the whole spread. I would recommend you make a cheap spreader with some cardboard or bristol board.
4)All depends, but tbqh like a quarter of ink should like last you 400-500 sticks if its a simple char. Usually bright ink wastes less. If you run low you can use some vinyl solvent and put some in your ink bottle shake it around and youll get like 30 or 40 more slaps depending on how much you add.
5)One side, the bottom and the top is optional, but if you do it on the top chances are it might come off over time with the squeege pressure.
(:

If my father can get me some adhessive paper during the week I'll post a how-to print tutorial with pics and everything soon.

i picked up some supplies at hobblelobble yesterday.
i'm going the route of "the cheaper the better" and using drawing fluid and screen filler, not photo emulsion.
using drawing fluid won't give you as good a print as photo emulsion, but i don't really care. i like dirty grimey prints anyways.
i'll take some pictures and post a step-by-step as i make my first screen

Good luck vagrant.

where do i get the screen and what mesh size should i be for oil/acrylic?
could i use homemade ink if i really wanted to? like whats so special about screen printing ink?
Just make sure it's fairly thick. Thing is screen printing ink is made so that it wont like clug the screen.
Oil based acrylics should work.
Just remember if the ink is too thin you'll just make a big mess and youll get bad prints.
zenne
06-11-2009, 08:53 PM
no i mean like oil paint, i dont think its acrylic based... and how does it stand in the weather(acrylic and oil...)?

Another idea, aside from how to print and such. I went to school for this for sometime, although theres no jobs, or openings. Printing is a dying art. What I did, and you can try....
If you know of a company that could use t-shirts/uniforms/apparel. Take some time to come up with a design they'll like. If its a company and uniforms, you'll be in luck with simplicity. Make a sample, show it to them. When someone has product in their hand, they're more likely to buy it than just telling them what you can do.
When I had access to machines and all the materials for practically free (One low class fee) I did all sorts of random shit for grades, and ended up supplying 3 stores with uniforms, and an assload of friends and girls with homemade gear. Great way to make some money.
faric ink is good, you have to heat seal it, but it's pretty much just plastic.

i dont have acetate paper, so would it be alright if i just did my design on glass, and used that? i'd do it on the bottom side so that theres no liek shadow, but that will wokr right?
and for the photo emulsion, it says after i sensitize it, it will only survive for like 4 months if i refridgerate it? wtf? can i sensitize liek haf or no?
cuz i gotta mix water with the sensitizer to make that work, but would that stay good it i keep half the sensitizer already sensitized?
H3TT1NG3R
06-27-2009, 11:38 PM
heres my design, it has 3 layers, the middle one goes fist, for the color, then the top outlines, then the bottom forcefield and type
http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/4554/arrowdesign.jpg (http://img194.imageshack.us/i/arrowdesign.jpg/)
I feel like if after mixing the sensitizer with water in the little bottle, you poured it out and only used half with half of the emulsion it would work, but I've never tried it. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Acetate is the same as overheads they have it at any office supply store, but if you really don't want to use it, a piece of glass should work fine. You just need to think about how you're trying to block the light from hitting the emulsion.
Also I don't know if you've looked into using drawing fluid and screen filler, but thats a simpler way to make a screen.
H3TT1NG3R
06-28-2009, 06:44 PM

then just spread the emulsion thinly on both sides, let it dry (do all of this in a dark place)
then once its dry, get some transparency paper, and draw ur image or print it on there
then put the transparency paper ontop of the screen, and put it under a light bulb for a certain amount of time(look up thw times online)

is there any spray i can use?
Hey guys,
I know I'm new to the forum and all that but I've got 5 years experiance doing printmaking, this serigraphy thing isn't that bad to start if your on a budget but it really does come down to if your serious, pay the money and go for the big stuff.
Making a screen out of framing wood from an art supply store, then stapling silk screen tight on the one side makes the easiest frame I find.
The problem with a screen like this is ink will leak under the sides if you didnt seal them off. Its not that bad a problem though as long as your image is smaller then the screen.
Acetate is very helpful for lining layers of a pic up. Mylar also works and if your really desperate, pretty much anything see thru and fairly solid works.
If you only have one layer to print and want every print after that to be in the same place just tape around the outside corners of your sticker and then print, remove the sticker off and line the new one up within the tape. Simple and no messing around with acetate. :)
I can go into more detail on things if you want me to, I also will try to get pics of my tags up in here as soon as I can actually get a camera :S

The other were full of bullshit talking. The first page has all the info you need, keep it that way. Fill this thread up with flicks, if you love wheatpaste so much, you should show us your pastes, not just your info. Any pointless talking will be deleted, if you have something you would like to share, we'll put it on the first page.
