View Full Version : The Universe

Anything related to our mysterious universe should be posted in this thread; from discussion to pictures. I'll start off with a couple of pictures and then once everyone has admired the pictures, we can discuss anything!

Pulsar Neutron Stars: They're basically planets or stars omitting radiation in a blinding "strobe-light" fashion.
http://www.williamsclass.com/EighthScienceWork/ImagesEighth/Pulsar.jpg

Magnetars: They're another type of neutron stars omitting radiation more wildly and they also have a very powerful magnetic field.
http://encarta.msn.com/othermedia/Features/Magnetars_425x283.jpg

Pulsars and Magnetars combined: Self-explanatory.
http://www.zmescience.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/230242main_pulsar2_sm.jpg

Hypervelocity Stars: They are the legitimate "shooting stars"
http://encarta.msn.com/othermedia/Features/HyperVelocityStars_425x283.jpg

Dark Energy: Scientist believe dark energy is gradually pulling the universe apart with ever increasing speeds. In theory, the energy will rip apart the entire universe one day, planet by planet and atom by atom.
http://encarta.msn.com/othermedia/Features/darkenergy_xray_425x283.jpg

This is some of my favorites from the universe, feel free to add your favorites as I will be doing the same.

Eagles Nebula: Is a young open clusters of stars found in the constellation of Serpens. Mostly composed of star-forming gas and dust. The "Eagle" is about 57 trillion miles tall.
http://www.flatrock.org.nz/topics/science/assets/eagle_nebula.jpg

Black Holes: Not to be confused with the lame Raiders' fans. [Ha!] I assume everyone knows what a black hole is. Recently, Stephen W. Hawkins said escaping a black hole is possible, although extremely rare and difficult, the feat can be accomplished. It cannot be "confirmed" but he is the greatest thinker of our time.
http://www.nrao.edu/images/supermassiveBlackHoleRip510.jpg

Super Earths: Are planets larger than our own Earth but not large enough to be considered gas giants. There are several different types of "super earths" and scientists are hopeful they can theoretically host life.

if you've got an issue with the viewpoint on religion that zeitgeist delivers, the response video you posted isnt the way to go about it. just as they criticize the zeitgeist video for not citing sources and such, they themselves do not provide many. if you're going to try to 'debunk' a claim, you cant simply say "they are wrong because this is how it is." if they say its unfounded, present some foundation on your own claims. otherwise, why would anyone be any more apt to give credibility to one over the other?

im not saying i like one any more than the other. just my two cents.

Thanks man. I love talking about the universe and life to my friends and family but they don't share my fascination so they tend to lose interest, rather quickly.

About after life: I'm still stuck on neutral grounds. I want to believe there's more after we die because it would be fantastic to live an eternal life but I also realize how slim the possibility of that is. On the other hand, if we truly are the only intelligent life form in the universe, there very well could be a creator.

I don't understand anything enough to definitively say "there is no God" or "there is a God."

-Empty-Can-

On the other hand, if we truly are the only intelligent life form in the universe, there very well could be a creator.

Thats what I believe. We are the only life form because why would god make tons of different planets with different people and get people to follow the same religion or something. It would be amazing if there were other life forms. But in a religious point of view i dont think there should be.

This is why I tend to keep an open mind. I want to be able to make my own decisions on what I firmly believe, whether others disagree.

Reincarnation is really hard for me to believe and understand. Possibly because I never really paid much attention to it.

SAID

To believe in reincarnation, or pretty much any beliefs, you really have to put your mind to it. I can't really explain it, but if it seems possible in your mind with the exceptions of the couple of doubts that the human body cannot avoid making, then stick to it and research theories and such..

I slightly believe in reincarnation But I often wonder if I'm just setting myself up because I can't deal with nothingness.
I do kind of have the belief that energy can be transfered and that kind of thing so maybe our energies are transfered.
Alot of times I think maybe our body is just protecting our energy

I don't believe in a god so much.
How can something so powerful be present, yet so many things go on where you wonder why the fuck didn't he step in
WHy do so many prayers go unanswered?

I don't believe in a god so much.
How can something so powerful be present, yet so many things go on where you wonder why the fuck didn't he step in
WHy do so many prayers go unanswered?
Things like that.

Being raised Catholic, you are thought that God gave humans "freedom." Freedom to chose their own lives and believe what their minds want to believe and because of this, God will not interfere in our daily lives. You are given the Ten Commandments as God's only interference in our humanly lives.

Now, I don't know how much truth is in this but this is what Catholics are told in religious learning classes.

Anyway, this is a universe thread and I will continue to post random pictures for everyone's knowledge.

LBV 1806-20 - possibly the brightest star in the known universe. It has a variable luminosity of up to 5 million times greater than our own Sun's.

I don't know if I misunderstood this but while I was watching a strings theory program, they proposed a scale to make you understand just how small a "string" really is. There example was if you scale an atom as our sun, a string would be the size of a human!

I hope that makes sense...

Kinda late but I think reincarnation couldbe possible. I think you would become an animal rather than a human again. but since animals dont think in words like we do we would have no idea that we were a human before. I still dont believe in it but thats what i think.

Im really not sure what to think about wormholes. To me it seems hard to understand. If its like a tunnel that can take you to different universe then how would they be connected? They cant be side by side because you can observe around the worm hole. These things are amazing.

Not sure how parallel or worm holes connect to each other but they can be shortcuts to the other side of the universe. We live in a 3 spatial Dimensional world, but there are 7 other spatial dimensions in our universe, so our perspective and out look on the universe is limited. It's like a 2D figure on a sphere trying to get to the middle/core, but it can only move on the surface.

The view over a valley of a tiny village with thatched(草盖的)roof cottages around a church; a drive through a narrow village street lines with thatched cottages painted pink or white; the sight in parts of England. Atlantica gold (http://www.atlanticagoldsale.com),Most people will agree that the thatched roof is an essential part of the attraction of the English countryside.
Thatching is in fact the oldest of all the building crafts practiced in the British Isles(英论诸岛). Although thatch has always been used for cottage and farm buildings, it was once used for castles and churches, too.
Thatching is a solitary(独自的)craft, which often runs in families. The craft of thatching as it is practiced toady has changed very little since the Middle Ages. Over 800 full-time thatchers are employed in England and Wales today, maintaining and renewing the old roofs as well as thatching newer houses. Many Atlantica power leveling (http://www.atlanticagoldsale.com/powerleveling.asp),property owners choose thatch not only for its beauty but because they know it will keep them cool in summer and warm in winter.
In fact, if we look at developing countries, over half the world lives under thatch, but they all do it in different ways. People in developing countries are often reluctant to go back to traditional materials and would prefer modern buildings. However, they may lack the money to allow them to import the necessary materials.Dofus Kamas (http://www.topdofus.com), Their temporary mud huts with thatched roofs of wild grasses often only last six months.Thatch which has been done the British way lasts from twenty to sixty years, and is an effective defiance against the heatThe researcher organized an experimental tournament(锦标赛)involving four youth teams. Each match lasted an hour, divided into three periods of 20 minutes during which different referees were in charge.
ffxi gil (http://www.ffxi-gil-store.com),
Observers noted down the referees’ errors, of which there were 61 over the tournament. Converted to a standard match of 90 minutes, each referee made almost 23 mistakes, a remarkably high number.

The researcher then studied the videotapes to analyse the matches in detail. Surprisingly, he found that errors were more likely when the referees were close to the incident. When the officials got it right, they were, on average, 17 meters away from rohan crone (http://www.rohancrone.com),the action. The average distance in the case of errors was 12 meters. The research shows the optimum(最佳的)distance is about 20 meters.

There also seemed to be an optimum speed. Correct decisions came when the referees were moving at a speed of about 2 meters per second. The average speed for errors was 4 meters per second.
9Dragons Gold (http://www.9Dgolds.com),
If FIFA, football’s international ruling body, wants to improve the standard of refereeing at the next World Cup, it should encourage referees to keep their eyes on the action from a distance, rather than rushing to keep up with the ball, the researcher argues.
world of warcraft power leveling (http://www.levelingshop.com/Wow_Power_Leveling.html),
He also says that FIFA’s insistence that referees should retire at age 45 may be misguided. If keeping up with the action is not so important, their physical condition is less critical.

The idea of sending astronauts to other galaxies is very outlandish. It would take hundreds and hundreds of years to exit our own galaxy traveling at the speed of light! Although interesting and ambitious, the idea is completely ludicrous. We should talk about sending other astronauts to the moon and possibly Mars before entertaining the idea of shipping off humans on a journey that wouldn't even be completed by those on board.

Moon conspiracy theories are interesting, but completely bullocks.
We absolutely landed on the moon. Proof?
On one of the missions they placed mirrors on the surface of the moon, and using high power lazorz on earth, they aim at the mirrors on the moon and reflect the beam back.
They do this to measure the distance between the moon and earth, which is slowly getting bigger.

There's your proof. Conspiracy shattered.

Most of the claims within the moon landing conspiracy don't hold up when you really examine them anyways.

For instance, some claim that in pictures, shadows go in different directions proving more than one light source, which means studio.
They have no idea what they're talking about.
If there is more than one light source, there will be more than one shadow cast off a single object.
All objects have one shadow. One light source.
They only go in different directions because of the topography of the land they are cast on.

The moon conspiracy theory is based on ridiculous claims and assumptions by people who have no education on the things they are talking about. They would rather believe many stories that dumb down the geniuses at nasa, and demonize the politicians in government, all based off shoddy evidence that is collected only to prove their point.

PS: Dark Matter was invented, out of the blue, by theoretical physicists, because they honestly have no idea why the universe acts the way it does.

Furthermore, it's claimed that the entire vehicle (lander and LIM) only had the computational power of a small calculator, thus making the journey impossible.

This makes perfect sence. Space rockets are extremely expensive. The more weight you have, the more rocket fuel you need, equals more weight, equals more fuel just to lift the fuel.
They needed to make the craft as light as possible. To so all the computaions were done on earth.
Besides, the astronauts weren't qualified to make the computations anyways. They were just there to push certain buttons and be passengers.
They were there to walk on the moon, not get there.
We already got to the moon several times before sending men.

If wormholes actually do connect to another part of the universe through the fabric of space, then it could take millions of years to find out. We would have to wait for the signal from whatever got sent in to reach all the way back to the start point IF it did pop up somewhere else in the universe.
But there's no telling where the wormhole would go, if it did go somewhere.
I think the wormhole is just a really really massive object in a single point.

I was reading this book that is Called Fabric of the Cosmos:Space, Time, and the texture of reality. It talked alot about spacetime...they refer to this as one single thing. Instead of thinking about just one or the other think of them as an interwoven fabric that greatly influence each other. An example that helps me understand it is this:

Think of space being an arrow pointing north, and time being an arrow pointing east. If we were traveling at the speed of light we would pretty much be traveling on that arrow pointing north, therefor we would bairly be moving east at all (maybe a tiny fraction) so essentailly time would be standing still (our time). But since we are traveling no where close to the speed of light in our everday lives, I like to think that we are traveling between the to arrows, but mostly east. Lets just say NorthEastEastEast. So we are moving mostly on that time arrow, but a little on the space one.

The book is crazy..and i have not yet finished it. But it also brings up a point somewhere on the lines of this...try to stay with me...i dont even fully understand what im about to say but its something i think about...but blah here it is.

So what is the present? is it like a nanosecond in time (or perhaphs even smaller...so small we cant even measure it). Lets say that chewbacca is in another galaxy far away...but hes cutting lawns everyday like i do. so were pushing a lawn mower at the same time right? but since he is so far away it's like he is back in time, and vica versa, to him, I am back in time. Since even traveling at the speed of light would take thousands(or millions) of years for our eyeballs to even see wtf is going on. So its like were doing shit at the same time...but we are so far away, that we are both in the past to each other ya know? so therefore space and time must be related.

But think about this...what is actually happening right now? I feel that what is actually happening right now, is only relevent to me. I'm taking the same concept i talked about with chewbacca or stars being really far away and bringing it down to an earth level. You look at a streetlight (turning on) that is really far away...it still takes time for the light to reach your eye doesn't it? So isn't the street light flicking on...in the past while you are in the present?

the farther away something is...the farther back in time it is (essentially). So you can't see the present? I say essentially because, yes things can be happening in the present at the same time...but who could see it?)

I like to think of time as like a force field around me, and the present is a microscopic point in my brain. It spreads out in all directions from my body to the universe. Since we are all on earth, and really we cant distinguish the speed of light, it is almost the same as thinking about time being a force field around earth instead of my brain. (since hey what difference does it make if the point of the present is the size of the earth or a microscopic point in my brain...its still smalll as FUCK)

What about two people who were born the same day and died the same day...one turned out to be a jet pilot, the other a 9-5 desk job. Lets say they pilot travels possibly hundreds of thousands more miles in his lifetime then the other guy. Would he be traveling through more space and less time? I think essentially yes in my opinion. So would the pilot have essentially lived a longer life in the same period of time?

I don't think clocks represent time well....for our tiny little earth lives yes...but universally no. I try to make my time on this world more valuable by realizing how crazy time is, and by getting out and exploring the world while others sit on there ass.

I don't think that we'll ever be able to understand the universe. Even if we could travel faster that the speed of light, it still is impossible to explorer the whole universe. No human would ever be able to go to different universes unless scientists created something that made people live hundreds of thousands of years we wont go very far. We can barely make it to Mars. If the universe is infinite, we could never find out.

Lets say that a space ship did reach the end of the universe. You wont rip through it like a piece of paper. I think it would almost be like getting stuck. You wouldn't be traveling any distance but it would look as if you just stopped moving. Kind of like the universe is one big mirror.

I think the theory about how time slows down when traveling at the speed of light is true Were moving so fast it seems as time slows down. Almost like when your driving next to a car on the highway and you look at the wheel and it looks like it is moving half the speed.

Loki X Sho

Example: Speed of Light 186,000mph Now when another object travels at the speed of light right next to it. They're going 0. Now if one object speeds up. Lets say to 190,000mhp. Now really its only going 4,000mph because its only 4,000mph faster than the speed of light.

They used to throw the bodies of those they sacrificed into the cenotes, which are bodies of water linked underground and have holes penetrating the surface.
They'd throw dead bodies into one cenote and use another for their source of water, obviously since they're are linked underground their water source became poisoned.
I'm sorry but if a civilization can't work out that the water from cenotes is linked and not separate you think they're gonna be able to calculate the end of the world? Motherfuckers believed in giant snake gods...cmon.

Here's something to chew on...

In 1961, University of California, Santa Cruz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_California,_Santa_Cruz) astronomer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronomer) and astrophysicist Dr. Frank Drake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Drake) devised the Drake equation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_equation). This controversial equation multiplied estimates of the following terms together:

The rate of formation of suitable stars.
The fraction of those stars which contain planets.
The number of Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth)-like worlds per planetary system.
The fraction of planets where intelligent life develops.
The fraction of possible communicative planets.
The "lifetime" of possible communicative civilizations.

Drake used the equation to estimate that there are approximately 10,000 planets containing intelligent life, with the possible capability of communicating with Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth) in the Milky Way (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milky_Way) galaxy.[29] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extraterrestrial_life#cite_note-28)
Based on observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, there are at least 125 billion galaxies in the universe. It is estimated that at least ten percent of all sun-like stars have a system of planets[30] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extraterrestrial_life#cite_note-marcyprogth05-29), there are 6.25*1018 stars with planets orbiting them in the universe. If even a billionth of these stars have planets supporting life, there are some 6.25 billion life-supporting solar systems in the universe.

I wonder if jesus visited those planets too...

How did they prove it? Did they fly their own space shuttle to the moon, scavenge the landscape for the flag, and then take pictures of them doing so?

They sent some laser signal to the moon at some specific location which had a special reflector that sent back the signal. And then signal came back. I suggest watching that episode.

^ Does not rely on the Mythbusters for confirmation of actual moon landing.

How about we do it again? 41 years later. We should have it down to a science, by now. :)

we should go to the moon again and plant a smaller american flag next to the other one...and this time, in HD.
