yeah and 3d is tricky, a good hint is to pick a place u want the "light" to shine on your piece and concentrate on the shadow/3d lookin like the light is castin the shadow from the same spot,

thats something else not to do.. dont disrespect other writers. everyone has to start off somewhere, why not try to help them? im POSITIVE some people helped you out when you were starting. i'm always willing to help people out.

thats not to say that you can ask dumb questions.. you should try to find out as much about graffiti as you can by yourself.. but dont be afraid to ask questions.. just make sure you cant find the answer yourself first.

Here's a big "to do or not to do". I think alot of us toys get so anxious to get up, we get a half assed feel of a style and go bomb the hell out of everything and it's a mess. In one respect, that's a way to learn. In another, I think we're setting things back for the true writers out there. For instance, I went out and bombed a frieght a week back. First time. Had to bust my cherry. I had some descent sketches, but when I got out there, I realised a pencil and a can are two seperate tools. I had no can control and I made a drippy mess. Now it's off to who the hell knows and at every intersection that's blocked off for a railroad crossing, people are gonna sit in there cars and see that throw up and say "that's ugly. I hate graffiti." Yeah so fuck 'em. But then maybe the railroad operators will see it and say the same thing and start cracking down or paint over my piece and three other incredible burners along with it. I think we should probably stick to our black books until we're confident and when we are, come back here and look at some of the kings' work. If we're still confident, find a place out of eyesight and learn how to use a can. Then get your glory. For now, if I have to get up, I'm sticking with stencil.

Dont tag on the back of the rail police's building..or on stationary boxcars in the yard(You know boxcars that dont move....ever) A lot of yards use them to find out where you paint(some writers can help hitting a boxcar without even having to go into the yard)

There are tons of writers out there who are just tits, but you don&#39;t see them everywhere... personally, I prefer quality over quantity... you don&#39;t need your name on every bathroom stall in a bus station, or every street sign in a one block radius... spread out... find a place noone will see to get your can control up... and leave the arrows at home unless they are an underscore on your tag...

Im pretty new to writing and I figured Id share some things I learned my first couple times going out and actually painting...

1. A pen and a can are TOTALLY different things. Just like someone said above me its a whole nother ball game. I was dripping everywhere, letters werent straight, etc.. Instead of bombing everything and making a fool out of myself for everyone to see I found myself a hidden spot that no one goes to where I can practice. Im now a lot better with the mechanics of the can.

2. Dont paint over other peoples stuff. Alot of the graff ive seen in my area are pieces that have been crossed out or painted over and thats just fucked up. Someone put all the time and effort into their work just to see it destroyed. Plus your just going to start beef and you got enough trouble just worrying about cops.

3. I guess the last thing I discovered is to take your time if you are able to. Find a nice hidden spot and just practice everything. As soon as i stopped worrying about getting caught and focused on painting I did a lot better. Be aware not paranoid.


Most of that has been said in one way or another already, but oh well.

A few things that helped me out,but you gotta remember scenes vary alot from city to city the place where i live ,London,has a tenedency to be very violent and is full of toys.but you wouldnt call em toys to thier face cos the toys here are gang members lol.So heres mine:

1.Decide early whether you wanna be a bomber or a artist or whatever.Whether you wanna see your name up in throw sixty times on one wall or whether you wanna do beatiful pieces that burn pretty much everything but have a limited lifespan.Most people start out as bombers

2.If your gonna be a bomber,DO NOT PUNCH ABOVE YOUR WEIGHT(old saying :D ) don&#39;t go climbin up streetlights to hit bridges or doin crazy shit like JA.If your gonna be a piecer PRACTICE YOUR SHIT FIRST people get VERY pissed off if u waste space on a good/legal wall. find a plot(hidden place to practice) and make sure ur stuff is good enough for display.

3.Don&#39;t worry about bein picky over paint.Especially if your gonna do pieces your gonna want to have decent paint.For bombers this isnt really an issue.

and finally
When startin out dont tell everyone you write You&#39;ll be a local suspect,If any graff shit goes down in school you&#39;ll be suspected and so on.Keep it on the DL.
Also try to keep your personal and graff life seperate.It&#39;s perfectly normal to think about graff 24/7 (literally i do) but try not to become obsessive.

As for pickin names ask someone whos beeen writin a long time.I did and i got a perfect name it&#39;s amazing how much ppl learn from graff. (bombers are gonna want short names)

I mean, I guess Im a toy, whatever. And I dont brag about my shit cus Im not that great. I just got my hands on some cans a couple weeks ago and did a couple decent pieces so far. Ive been messin around with sketchin pieces and shit, but when I actually went out and used a can, I found it was like a thousand times easier than a pencil. Did anyone have that same thing happen to em? Like all my pencil sketches look like shit, but using a can is just really natural for me, I can take more time and make sure a line looks good. If I plan a piece in pencil, itll never look as good as if I just go and and paint.

Also, this is a lame question I guess, but whats stopping anyone from piecing and bombing? I mean Ive done some bombs and pieces and I like to do both. And if my shit gets painted over, I mean it sucks but I dont really care, long as I got to take a pic of it.

And lastly, everyone thats telling toys to sketch before they paint, I say fuck that. You gotta learn some where. Im not saying go bomb everything if you still dont know how to hold a can. But everyone has to start somewhere.

Most tags at my school are shit, so going over them would be a help to the whole student body. Plus I dont think many toys are going over others people shit. Youd have to be a fuckin retard to do that as a toy. But yeah it is a good idea not to flash your tag at school though. Especially if youve been bombin around town and youve got some heat on ur name. unknown. for outlines get a cap wit a thin spray and u hav to move real quick. if ur not happy with the outline u might have to wait till its dry then go over it again so it doesnt drip all over

just sketch alot, i don&#39;t really even have my own style yet but i don&#39;t have that completely toyed out bubble letter style anymore, but yeah just keep sketching and you&#39;ll get better, you don&#39;t really need much more tips then that cuz you&#39;ll get more and better ideas as you progress

A good tip for toys (like me), not sure if already mentioned but go to a hardware store or arts supply store and get pieces of plywood or old canvas shit, not best material but &#036;4 for a real BIG sheet...

now take it to your backyard or somewhere private and practice... make sure you learn can control before you take it to the streets.

Yo in my opinion, being bashed on is a part of getting better. Everyone has gone through it and all the writers of today and tommorw will too. We should be working together to improve though and not just saying "its gay as fuck". Another thing, Don&#39;t be scared to post shit on here, its just the fuckin internet, its way better than tryin to put it on the streets, and hopefully will be more helpfull. Just practise, practise, practise , you&#39;ll get better eventually. Oh and my tip for toys eventhough its probly been said is, dont get into graff to impress your friends or girlfriend or w.e. Dont show it off to everyone and shit cuz it will most definately come back to bite your balls. Peace

Exactly. Dont worry about the people who are all bitchin at it, you dont need em, so dont lisen to them. There are a few (if not many) people who are willing to help you and want to see you do better. Dont take everything you hear to heart, but read, watch, and take everything to mind.

and i went to art school for like 4-5 years so i just blew past him with skill as soon as i started because i had more talent then him

basically kids are just all assholes and have too much to prove but it is all part of the game

I hate Art classes cuz here they are straight up boring. last year I was drawing some cool designs to the best of my ability and the teacher only gave me a 2... so I like dropped that class the next day and went into Comm tech... i think it does help because u already know more than someone else if they started writing at the same time as you

dont take art in school it doesnt help whatsoever
i was better than my teachers in middle school thats how pointless it was and there were kids askin the teachers if i could teach

also if you go to art school and do like color paintings or pastels, colored pencil sketches, oil, acrylic etc.. it teaches u which colors go good together and the color wheel and shit so i think it really helped

yea my first year we did alot of color contrast and blending which helped i think. and then we did a thing on commercial lettering and one of the topics was graffiti and like everyone did that so yea i do think art school does help but not art class in shcool.

Honestly not a big fan of that, sorry mate.
The yellow patches are disgusting. Also the sketch isnt busy enough to use 5 colours try use 2/3 colours.Also close the gap in the middle of the C up because all the others are tight but that one isnt.
