Staying Ahead Of Graffiti
Kelowna's new Graffiti Eradication and Prevention Coordinator, is pleased with the response to various programs designed to eliminate graffiti "tags" from around the city.

Colleen Cornock says the "Adopt A Spot Program," has been particularly effective.

Cornock says 49 people have signed up for the "Adopt A Spot Program" in Kelowna, with seven more on the Westside. "Each one of these participants has adopted several locations, so clean-up efforts are well underway," says Cornock.

Cornock says one industrious individual has already cleaned up 64 tags.

She says the fact most people indicate their locations have not been re-tagged or re-vandalized after clean up speak to the success of the program.

Cornock was hired as the city's Graffiti Eradication and Prevention coordinator in October, 2005. She says the clean up effort began in earnest in January of this year.

In addition to the "Adopt A Spot Program," Cornock says individual organizations can sign up for specific clean up times, or people can get involved with the regular clean up group, the Graffiti Eradication Team.

Twelve members of the Willow Park Church youth group tackled three locations in Kelowna on March 18th, and during a five hour period, were able to wipe out over 600 square feet of graffiti.

RCMP Unveil Beach Gator
It&#39;s the latest tool in Kelowna&#39;s crime fighting arsenal.

The "Gator" will hit the streets immediately, patrolling City Park, the Mission Park Greenway and along the beachline boardwalk.

RCMP Superintendent Bill McKinnon unveiled the new tool Monday.

"We&#39;ve been working the last year on how to deal with downtown issued---how to make better use of resources---how to effectively police the downtown core," says McKinnon.

He says the Gator will afford members to cover a greater area and offers more maneuverability than other patrol methods.

"It will allow two officers, likely one officer and one auxiliary, to cover considerable distance quickly," says McKinnon.

The new Gator patrol will be used in addition to the current bike and foot patrols---it will not replace them.

McKinnon says the Gator addresses the need to improve efficiency and effectiveness of patrols.

McKinnon says the idea came from Hawaii, where a similar vehicle is being used.

"We&#39;re I believe the first in Canada to use this type of vehicle for patrolling, but we have a unique situation here with the beachfront area," says McKinnon.

The Gator cost the RCMP approximately &#036;7,000.

Vernon Graffiti Problem

Police responded to a possible break & enter in progress over the weekend and instead ended up arresting three suspects involved in spray painting graffiti.

Police were called when three male youths were spotted on the roof the Vernon Veterinary Clinic on Kal Lake Road at 9:30 PM on Saturday night. They were on the ground by the time police arrived and found to be in possession of two dozen spray cans of paint and cardboard stencils.

The youths had ‘tagged’ a picnic table prior to police arrival.

The youths were arrested, returned to cells and released to their parents that evening. The matter is still being investigated and no criminal charges have been laid as yet.

Graffiti is increasingly becoming a problem in Vernon and area. Both public and private property is being defaced at an alarming rate. A new anti-graffiti law is presently before Vernon City Council which would make it a by-law infraction and hasten graffiti removal by property owners.

Graff may have started in nyc, But that doesnt mean that people living outside that city arent aloud to do it. Its not restricted to nyc.
And shows how much you know about canada. We arent living in the fukn trees and shit. We have cities here also. Take vancouver for example. Shit goes on just as bad there with graffiti as in nyc. Why dont you try going to a big city in canada before busting your mouth off about it.

We do graffiti because we love it. For some of us its almost 100% of our lives.
If graffiti isnt fun for you, Then you truely dont love it. And if YOU dont love it then you should quit. It doesnt matter where in the world a writer is. A writer is a writer, And you should be respecting them all. It doesnt matter if they didnt break bones. Or arent sly enough to not get chased by cops.

Vernon Graffiti Problem

Police responded to a possible break & enter in progress over the weekend and instead ended up arresting three suspects involved in spray painting graffiti.

Police were called when three male youths were spotted on the roof the Vernon Veterinary Clinic on Kal Lake Road at 9:30 PM on Saturday night. They were on the ground by the time police arrived and found to be in possession of two dozen spray cans of paint and cardboard stencils.

The youths had ‘tagged’ a picnic table prior to police arrival.

The youths were arrested, returned to cells and released to their parents that evening. The matter is still being investigated and no criminal charges have been laid as yet.

Graffiti is increasingly becoming a problem in Vernon and area. Both public and private property is being defaced at an alarming rate. A new anti-graffiti law is presently before Vernon City Council which would make it a by-law infraction and hasten graffiti removal by property owners.
