In both of those the face is out of focus, although that might be what you're going for if the wristwatch is the focus, and the shoes in the 2nd one.

I don't see anything ridiculous about those greyscales. YOu talked about diversity but then dismissed portriats of friends and self portraits, both of which are just as worthy of being in here as those greyscales.

I sometimes tape the af assist beam on my camera when I'm not using flash, because I don't necessarily want people to notice that I'm about to take a picture. It definetly makes it focus slower though.
