You dont want a camera that you don't know all the functions, so go for a d40 or whatever canon sells as an equivalent. Don't jump into a d90 thats a little ways out.

D40 with a kit lens is a great place to start.

Just buy what you can afford and learn how to use it.

That is a nice lens, I really advise that you go with the d300s and buy some nice lenses
